But, speaking generally, the main lesson to be learnt from this history by any who care to peruse... more But, speaking generally, the main lesson to be learnt from this history by any who care to peruse it is that men who conform to the will of God, and do not venture to transgress laws that have been excellently laid down, prosper in all things beyond belief, and for their reward are offered by god felicity; whereas, in proportion as they depart from the strict observance of these laws, things (else) practicable become impracticable, and whatever imaginary good thing they strive to do ends in irretrievable disasters. Josephus, Ant. 1.14. In 66 C.E. the Jewish nation revolted against the Roman Empire which had ruled it since the time of Pompey's conquest of Jerusalem in 63 B.C.E. 1. The result of the 63 B.C.E. conquest by Pompey was the subjugation of the area of Palestine; the result of the revolt of 66-70 C.E. was the destruction of the Jewish nation. From the war of 66-70 C.E. emerged a chronicler of that war and the interpreter of Jewish history to the Romans, Joseph ben Matthais, better known as Flavius Josephus Judaicus. Josephus was born to a priestly family with ties to the Hasmonean rulers from the time before Herod. 2. He was born in the "year Gaius Caesar became Emperor" (37/38 C.E.) and made his first trip to Rome at the age of 26 to see about obtaining the release of two priests that were being held there ". . . on a slight and trifling charge" (Vita 13). Upon his return he 1.Josephus, Antiquitates Judaicae 14.74. Josephus' works are the Vita, Antiquitates Judaicae (Ant.), Bellum Judaicum (BJ), and Contra Apionem (Ap.). The text and translation of the works of Josephus used is the edition of H. St. J. Thackeray, et al, Josephus, Loeb Classical Library (Cambridge: 1926-1963). These works will be cited by work, book, and line. Notes and comments by the translators will be noted by their name and the volume and page and note number in relationship to the text wherein the note is made. 2.The details of Josephus' life are to be found in his autobiography, the Vita. 2 04-09-2026 found Israel in revolt against Rome and himself being sent to Galilee to command the Jewish forces there (Vita 7-8). Subsequently he found himself under siege in Jotapata for forty-seven days, after which he was captured by the Romans. Under the Romans he served as advisor and thus incurred the hatred of his countrymen. After the fall of Jerusalem he took up life as a Roman citizen and proceeded with the writing of his works. His first was the Bellum Judaicum written shortly after the war, appearing between 75 and 79 C.E. 3. It is a description of the wars the Jews fought from the time of Antiochus IV Epiphanes (165 B.C.E.) to the time of the fall of Jerusalem in the war in which he was involved. According to Thackeray he wrote Antiquitates Judaicae sixteen years later, in 93-94 C.E. 4. The Antiquitates (Antiquites from here on) is, more than anything else, a rewriting or restating of the history of the Jewish people for the benefit of the Roman people. Josephus' purpose was to present the history of the Jews as one that was as rich and important as that of the Greek and Romans. The Antiquities is his magnus opus. The main source of his work is the historical writings of the Jews found in their scriptures. In this work we have a Jewish author writing to a Roman audience in the Greek language. This has led scholars to see it as an apologetic. 5. This investigation will take a close look at this position as a part of the overall evaluation of Josephus' work. It will focus on the place of his presentation of Daniel in that work and whether his use of Daniel contributes to a better understanding of the larger corpus. As such, there 3. The Greek text isπορευθέντες οὖν μαθητεύσατε πάντα τὰ ἔθνη, βαπτίζοντες αὐτοὺς εἰς τὸ ὄνομα τοῦ πατρὸς καὶ τοῦ υἱοῦ καὶ τοῦ ἁγίου πνεύματος, διδάσκοντες αὐτοὺς τηρεῖν πάντα ὅσα ἐνετειλάμην ὑμῖν• 1 There is much discussion, debate, and disagreement on this passage, the crux of which centers on the treatment of the first word, πορευθέντες. All recognize it as the participle form of πορεύομαι 2 having the meanings, go, proceed, travel, move from one place to another. It is when it comes to translating it into English that the disagreement arises. This paper will take the position that the best exegetical technique for evaluating the text to determine the best way to translate πορευθέντες is to employ Discourse Analysis, particularly that as presented by Robert Longacre. 3

Genesis 1 has been an enigma to exegetes and scientists since man has read the text and read the ... more Genesis 1 has been an enigma to exegetes and scientists since man has read the text and read the heavens. Attempts to reconcile or match the two sources of the creative 1activity of God has garnered discussion and debate, often very heated, for millennia. Each time a new way of interpreting the text or peering more closely at the heavens has advanced the discussion and the attempts at finding or recognizing agreements between the two books God has written-Scripture and Nature. While the books have remained unchanged, the hermeneutical tools aimed at evaluating each, linguistics and science, have advanced. This paper is an attempt at providing yet another effort at seeing the agreements in the two books of God. The long history of such endeavors tempers this effort and the author knows that this will not be the end of the discussion and that this paper may achieve no more than to find itself as another item in the catalog of efforts of the creature attempting to understand and proclaim the glory and majesty of the Creator.
