The Sacred Continuity of the Divine Feminine: Re-evaluating the Name Mary as Inheritor of the Goddess Tradition

This paper re-evaluates the historical, linguistic, and symbolic importance of the name "Mary" th... more This paper re-evaluates the historical, linguistic, and symbolic importance of the name "Mary" through an archaeolinguistic and theological lens. While traditional etymologies and doctrinal perspectives frame Mary as the mother of Jesus, a deeper investigation reveals that she represents a continuity of the ancient divine feminine, reflected across civilisations in the goddesses Inanna, Ishtar, Asherah, and others. This study explores how Catholicism, particularly Marian devotion, preserves and reinterprets sacred traditions associated with the goddess archetype. Drawing from underrepresented sources, ancient priesthood structures, and symbolic imagery, we argue that Mary is a syncretic figure whose veneration carries forward suppressed but persistent forms of the sacred feminine.
