This theological vision is shaped by and for urban and cultural centers. Redeemer and the other churches we have helped to start minister in the center city. We believe ministry in the center of global cities is the highest priority for the church in the twenty-first century. While this theological vision is widely applicable, it is distinctly flavored by the urban experience. 4. The theological vision is at the center of ministry. As described above, a theological vision creates a bridge between doctrine and expression. It is 1. The Gospel axis. At one end of the axis is legalism, the teaching that asserts or the spirit that implies we can save ourselves by how we live. At the other end is antinomianism or, in popular parlance, relativism-the view that it doesn't matter how we live; that God, if he exists, loves everyone the same. But the gospel, as we will argue in a later chapter, is neither legalism nor relativism. We are saved by faith and grace alone, but not by a faith that remains alone. True grace always results in changed lives of holiness and justice. It is, of course, possible to lose the gospel because of heterodoxy. That is, if we no longer believe in the deity of Christ or the doctrine of justification, we will necessarily slide toward relativism. But it is also possible to hold sound doctrine and yet be marked by dead orthodoxy (a spirit of self-righteousness), imbalanced orthodoxy (overemphasis on some doctrines that obscure the gospel call), or even "clueless orthodoxy," which results when doctrines are expounded as in a theology class but aren't brought together to penetrate people's hearts so they experience conviction of sin and the beauty of grace. Our communication and practices must not tend toward either law or license. To the degree that they do, they lose lifechanging power.¹¹ 2. The City axis (which could also be called a Culture axis). We will show that to reach people we must appreciate and adapt to their culture, but we must also challenge and confront it. This is based on the biblical teaching that all cultures have God's grace and natural revelation in them, yet they are also in rebellious idolatry. If we overadapt to a culture, we have accepted the culture's idols. If, however, we underadapt to a culture, we may have turned our own culture into an idol, an absolute. If we overadapt to a culture, we aren't able to change people because we are not calling them to change. If we underadapt to a culture, no one will be changed because no one will listen to us; we will be confusing, offensive, or simply unpersuasive. To the degree a ministry is overadapted or underadapted to a culture, it loses life-changing power. 3. The Movement Axis. Some churches identify so strongly with their own

The need for growing and mature Christians in a negative world is self-evident. Leaders will find his scriptural approach to lifelong growth and learning a valuable addition to their reading material." Gerry Karst, General Vice President, General Conference Of Seventh-Day Adventists "This comfortable read provides a vision of how God's people in local church settings can achieve harmony and sustain unity while facing a challenging future in a turbulent world. It makes a great 'book club' selection for an entire congregation or for small groups." Ella Simmons, General Vice President, General Conference Of Seventh-Day Adventists "Jonas Arrais has a message that all church members, in whatever position, ought to listen to. It's a very practical guide, well written and well thought out, regarding the daily life of the church. Reading the book is one thing; we need the courage to implement what it teaches."

We are witnessing a revival of interest in occultism in our nation. Witchcraft, astrology, sorcery, Satan worship, and other similar practices are on the rise. Millions of young people are playing games with the occult. Motion pictures and television shows reflect the popularity of occult themes; demon possession and satanism have become common subjects of the entertainment media. Palm readers, mediums, and witches are perhaps more visible now than they have been at any time in our history. Satan loves it. He is the one who controls the demonic power behind every kind of occult activity. God expressly forbids any kind of involvement in the occult. He commanded the Israelites: There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch, or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer. For all that do these things are an abomination unto the Lord: and because of these abominations the Lord thy God doth drive them out from before thee (Deut. 18:10-12). In other words, occult activity is so offensive to God that because of it, He drove the Canaanites out of the land. According to 1 Chronicles 10:13-14, Saul forfeited the kingdom and died because he consulted a medium. In fact, under the Old Testament law, death was the penalty for occult involvement. Leviticus 20:27 states, "A man also or woman that hath a familiar spirit, or that is a wizard, shall surely be put to death: they shall stone them with stones: their blood shall be upon them." Nevertheless, the appeal of the occult is strong. Some people are drawn into satanic practices by the promises of prestige and influence. Others are mystified by the strange phenomena and desire to investigate them further. Still others are influenced by friends and relatives to experiment with what may at first appear to be a harmless diversion but turns out to be a satanic practice. Virtually every major newspaper in our nation has a daily astrology column. For many people who would not otherwise dabble in the occult, those columns can be an introduction to the demonic realm. Satan is subtle. His most vicious traps may at first seem harmless. But Satan's power is unrelenting, and even the slightest occult involvement tends to fuel the desire for more. Before he knows it, the curious experimenter has become an enslaved practitioner. Look closely at some of the appeals Satan uses to coax people into the world of the occult. POWER One lure Satan uses to draw people into involvement with demons is the promise of power. The quest for power was the very thing that led to Satan's fall. His desire to be like God was nothing more than a craving for power and glory. He understands the desire for power, and he uses it effectively to entice people into his realm. Occult abilities themselves are called "powers." Mind reading, prognostication, levitation, fortune-telling, psychic healing, magic writing, astral projection, and all the forms of witchcraft, voodoo, and magic are but a few of the powers demons can give to those who seek them. Virtually every major occult activity promises power, from the basest forms of primitive tribal voodoo to the sophisticated brands of witchcraft practiced in Europe and America. Occult practitioners admit that the single determiner of status in the world of the occult is power. That entire world, from Satan and the demons on down, is consumed by a desire to control others. Consequently, it is a world governed by fear, superstition, curses, and lies; and in that world, power is all that matters. I have dealt with witch doctors, sorcerers, witches, and other people entangled in occultism, and I am amazed at what they will do in their pursuit of power. Many have cut off fingers, toes, or ears as offerings to the evil spirits that control them. Others tell me they have fasted and prayed regularly to receive demon power. Arlindo Barbosa de Olivera, a former witch doctor from Brazil, who also used to work in the office of the Brazilian president, told me that he used to drink hot chicken blood to appease the demons that controlled him. He also would cut himself and mix his own blood with wine as an offering to the evil spirits. Arlindo was converted to Christ and renounced his occult powers to serve the Lord. He has spoken with me in evangelistic meetings across the country. Arlindo was a powerful witch doctor, head of the Congere, a sect forbidden by law in Rio de Janiero. He had the ability to speak in foreign languages he had not studied, predict international political events, heal, and place people under enchantments. He is convinced that all those powers were demonic, and he says they ruined his life. Before he met Christ, despite all the power he had, he was miserable. In the Western world, we are not often exposed to the intense forms of demonic power widely sought by people in many underdeveloped countries. I have met demon-controlled people who could walk barefoot on white-hot coals, eat glass, pierce their skin without bleeding, levitate, and perform other amazing supernatural feats. They do it to demonstrate their power. Whether we see it or not, however, that kind of demonic power is prevalent in our country as well. Satan worshipers and witches practice black magic and sorcery in almost every major city, and they claim to have astounding supernatural powers. Simon, a sorcerer who professed conversion to Christ, never renounced the quest for supernatural power that had drawn him into the occult. He saw the apostles lay hands on some people of Samaria who had believed in Christ, and the Samaritans received the Holy Spirit. Simon wanted that power for himself. And when Simon saw that through laying on of the apostles' hands the Holy Ghost was given, he offered them money, saying, Give me also this power, that on whomsoever I lay hands, he may receive the Holy Ghost. But Peter said unto him, Thy money perish with thee, because thou hast thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money. Thou hast neither part nor lot in this matter: for thy heart is not right in the sight of God (Acts 8:18-21). That account is rich with truth, but its key point is that God's power is not available from occultism; it is not for sale; it is available only through the Holy Spirit; and the main prerequisite is a heart that is right in the sight of God. This is why the promise of Satan's power is so elusive: he cannot offer unconditional power, and he cannot offer the richest kind of spiritual power-the power of the Holy Spirit. Everlasting power is available only to those who have genuinely trusted Christ and have allowed Him to make their hearts pure. KNOWLEDGE Another ploy Satan uses to entice people into occult involvement is the promise of knowledge. The most ferocious spiritual battles are usually the ones that take place in the mind, and Satan's most deadly weapons are those directed at the human intellect. Lust, greed, hatred, and perverse desires all begin in the mind. But one of Satan's subtlest and most effective attacks on the human mind is the promise of knowledge. It is the same lie with which the serpent beguiled Eve: "...your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil" (Gen. 3:5). If only they

How Perceptions of Success, Achievement & Recognition Fail Men in Difficult Times

The primary purpose of every author producing a prose volume should be to meet an immediate need ... more The primary purpose of every author producing a prose volume should be to meet an immediate need in the hearts and lives of a large segment of society. This book will challenge one of the greatest evils of our time and assist many suffering persons in becoming conquerors over obstacles that can defeat us. The background material for this book was born in the test tubes of practical and experimental laboratories of human behavior over a period of more than fifty years. Having lived among peoples of different cultures, I have observed mental illness in many lands. After counseling people in over 100 countries, I have concluded that one of the strangest and most tormenting enemies of man-whether he is black, yellow, or white; cultured or primitive-is fear. The Global March Fear is on a global march! The outbreak of World War I in 1914 caused the beginning of a great march of fear across the world. The economic depression of the 1930s further accelerated this vicious enemy's march. Material insecurity brought near panic to millions of hearts. World War II produced more fear. The world advanced from the primitive warfare used at the end of World War I-dropping small bombs from aircraft-to the atomic blasts of Nagasaki and Hiroshima at the end of World War II. All intelligent humans then realized there was no place to hide. Since World War II, scientists and statesmen have continually predicted the impending extermination of the human race. From this fear, the United Nations was born. Tensions, caused by devastating fear, grip the hearts of millions of frustrated people. The world is now looking for a political genius who, by bringing peace to the fearful nations, can relieve these tensions. This book, a positive approach to the subject, contains the answer to your personal fear problems. Chapter 1 Unmasking Man's Deadliest Enemy There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment (1 John 4:18). Fear has been called the Black Monster. Today this monster is striking with a demonic fury, waging aggressive warfare upon helpless people of all nations. Because of this wicked ogre, multitudes of modern lives are suffering material destruction, moral degradation, and spiritual annihilation. The Black Monster, which torments rational people, is not the ordinary excitement one feels after hearing a sudden noise or when performing a perilous task. This monster, unmasked, is an unreasoning, tormenting, persisting fear that makes life difficult and distressing, blacking out people's personalities with dark clouds of apprehension and hallucination. Universal Fear The problem most often presented to me by people of every color and social position throughout the world is the problem of fear. In addition to religious leaders, thinking people from all other walks of life are alert to this onslaught of fear. Herbert Hoover, a former president of the United States, summarized what he learned during an official world tour upon his return to America: "The dominant emotion everywhere in the world is fear. This applies to every part of human activities-finance, industry, farmers, workers, thinkers, and government officials." This painful and heart-stirring report is from a wise statesman and qualified observer. Medical authorities also realize that the world is in the iron-clasped grip of an invisible enemy, whose unrelenting stranglehold is destroying the vital life of society. Doctors fight an increasing number of battles against this real, yet unreal, monster in their patients. They are studying more and more the mental man along with the physical man. In the political arena, world rulers are almost to the same frustration point that King Belshazzar reached. The night his empire dissolved into the rubble of history amid the wine, women, and song of a state banquet, the Bible says, The king's countenance was changed, and his thoughts troubled him, so that the joints of his loins were loosed, and his knees smote one against another (Daniel 5:6). The cause of fear in that day was the organized might of the victorious Medes and Persians. Today it is the awful blasts of atomic bombs, intercontinental missiles, germ warfare, and deadly rays from outer space. Statesmen are among those most aware that there is no place to hide. The Atlantic Charter In his first inaugural speech, the late Franklin Delano Roosevelt, president of the United States and skillful statesman, said, "So first of all, let me assert my firm belief that the only thing we have to fear is fear itself-nameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror." At a secret rendezvous in the Atlantic Ocean, President Roosevelt and British Prime Minister Winston Churchill drew up the historic document known as the Atlantic Charter. This modern ''Magna Carta" is considered one of the greatest charters championing the common liberties of mankind. It will be remembered throughout history for its Four Freedoms: Freedom from Want, Freedom from Fear, Freedom of Speech, and Freedom of Religion. During the most dreadful conflict of history, these statesmen listed fear as one of the four major evils of the world. Our modern world is enslaved by fear of war, secret police, hunger, and oppression. These Allied statesmen solemnly vowed to give themselves to the fight against the Black Monster of fear. Every rational person should devote himself to fighting this vicious monster. Some of the greatest human tragedies have befallen those who are victims of fear. Without doubt, fear is the deadliest enemy of all people. Who and Why Fear respects no one. It haunts the unlearned and the university educated alike. It strikes at the highborn and those of humble origin. It walks the floors of the mansion and palace as well as the floors of the hut. Men from all walks of life have failed equally in the entrusted job of building a successful and happy life-a job which prepares one to live forever with God. Unmasking the Monster The hideous Black Monster must be unmasked. To do so, we cannot deal with it collectively. For personal results, we must disclose fear's effects on individuals. Real Fear and Shadow Fear The first step toward deliverance from this diabolical monster is to know that two kinds of fear exist: real fear and shadow fear. You would feel real fear if you were to meet an uncaged lion! If you fear something that does not exist, you are experiencing shadow fear. Maladjusted personalities result from shadow fear. This unreal fear is what we must fight. Positive and Negative Fears One of the newer translations of the Bible describes both a positive fear and a negative one. Fear can be either a profitable servant, or an overbearing master! Positive fear can be described as reverence and respect. The Bible says we are to fear God, but this fear is unrelated to horror or terror. It is the same "fear" a child has for his parents. When I was a boy, my father would delegate some small duty for me to perform during his absence. If I performed that duty well, I waited at the front gate for his approval and reward. But if I had failed to do my duty, I made myself difficult to find! I was afraid to meet my father. The Christian loves God and "waits at the gate" for His approval, but the sinner does not want to see God; he is afraid of God. The type of fear, positive or negative, that one feels depends upon whether or not he has done his duty. Facing Fears When a person "feels afraid," what does he feel? It is impossible to feel thought, but you can feel physical changes caused by a thought: your heart pounding out of control, your stomach churning like an angry sea, your legs trembling like an aspen leaf in a March wind. Neurologists teach that the lower central part of the brain, the thalamus, is the center of emotions. From the thalamus, thoughts of fear propel their impulses, manufacturing imaginary worries and fear phobias.

The church can only properly address this culture when our ministry is drawn from the deep well of sound doctrine. Denny Burk draws water from this well and serves it up for Christians to drink. His book is richly biblical and profoundly relevant, and so serves as a reliable guide to the challenging questions of sexual ethics facing us today. If you want to understand these complexities and help others to do the same, then this book is for you." Heath Lambert, Executive Director, Association of Certified Biblical Counselors; Senior Pastor, First Baptist Church Jacksonville, Florida "In a day of twisted thinking on marriage, gender, and sex, Dr. Burk gives us scripturally grounded, biblically solid, scholarly, practical insights into the intimate moments of life that should bring glory to God and the fulfillment of his beautiful plan." Mac Brunson, Senior Pastor, Valleydale Church, Birmingham, Alabama "Responding to the song of the Sirens, our culture steers to dash itself to death on the rocks of sexual sin. In this book, Denny Burk shows the way to the mast of biblical truth and urges us to lash ourselves to it. Read this book. Stop your ears. Turn from deadly sirens to the Lord Christ. Live." James M. Hamilton Jr., Professor of Biblical Theology, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary; author, God's Glory in Salvation through Judgment "Dr. Burk has made a groundbreaking contribution to the modern debate on sexuality. He presents the biblical view of sex and demolishes current attempts to misrepresent the same. His application of biblical truth to contemporary cultural issues in sexuality is crystal clear. Whether a Christian pastor or believer, this volume will be your go-to book for help in engaging the changing sexual landscape." Jerry Vines, Pastor Emeritus, First Baptist Church, Jacksonville, Florida; two-time President, Southern Baptist Convention "Denny Burk is one of evangelicalism's brightest young minds, and he brings that mind to bear in What Is the Meaning of Sex? This book is a thorough, biblical, and judicious engagement of all things sexual. Burk biblically rebuts the sexual spirit of the age and equips the reader to confront the pressing cultural and ethical issues associated therewith. I wish every student in my seminary would read this." Jason K. Allen, President, Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and College "Clear writing, thoughtful arguments, wise positions, courageous countercultural stand. I learned some things I didn't know and honed what I did. Denny is a skilled Bible interpreter and shrewd critic of politics and culture." Andy Naselli, Assistant Professor of New Testament and Biblical Theology, Bethlehem College and Seminary "Denny Burk is a true sexual revolutionary-not a revolutionary defined by 1960s standards, of course, but a revolutionary against the spirit of today's sexual zeitgeist, which is marked by sexual confusion and brokenness. Denny calls us away from an Eisenhower-era sexual Puritanism and toward a view of biblical sexual ethics-patterned after the gospel-that connects us to Jesus's cross and resurrection. Anyone familiar with Denny's blogging will know his seamless arguments and elegant prose, a treat this book amplifies. And as he does in his blogging, Denny tackles today's toughest issues with biblical grit."
