🌵 More than 100 farmers, researchers, government representatives, cooperatives and development partners came together in Morocco to explore sustainable solutions for managing the invasive cactus cochineal. Hosted by ICARDA under the project Mitigating Cochineal Infestation through Scaling of Black Soap and Community Training in Morocco, the field day showcased practical, farmer-tested approaches to restoring cactus production. Participants observed integrated pest management practices, cactus restoration techniques, and environmentally friendly solutions that help protect both livelihoods and biodiversity. By combining scientific research with farmer knowledge and community training, the initiative is helping build more resilient cactus production systems across Morocco. Getting agricultural research innovations into use in the dry areas is critically important, especially since these regions cover 40 per cent of the earth’s surface and are home to 2.5 billion people – a significant percentage of the world’s population. This is the core work of the International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Area (ICARDA), which works with partners worldwide, developing innovations to improve food security and the livelihoods of the rural poor. ICARDA’s work targets non-tropical dry areas in developing countries, and also produces international public goods with potential for global application. Research covers crops (wheat, barley, faba bean, lentil, chickpea and forage legumes), the management of natural resources (water, land, biodiversity), small ruminant production (sheep and goats), farming systems (intensification, diversification, integration between farming system components), and socio-economics and policy research – on how policies can be more relevant to the situation of low income countries. The estimated benefits of ICARDA’s crop improvement research and production of new varieties over the past 3 decades has been estimated at US$850 million per year. Over 900 improved varieties of wheat, developed from ICARDA material, have been released for cultivation worldwide. The new varieties offer higher yields; better tolerance to drought, heat, cold and salinity; and improved resistance to diseases, weeds and insect pests. Watch our short video - ‘ICARDA - What We Do’

🌴 We're in Nairobi for the Consortium for Red Palm Weevil Control (C4RPWC) Biannual Technical Steering Committee Meeting, where consortium partners are shaping the next phase of Red Palm Weevil management. Over the past three days, consortium partners, donor representatives, advisors, and scientific experts have reviewed the Consortium's first year and aligned on priorities to accelerate the delivery of integrated solutions for farmers. A key milestone was the development of the first Red Palm Weevil Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Solution Bundle, bringing together biological control, surveillance, phytosanitary measures, digital tools, and capacity development into a practical approach for farmers, extension services, and national plant protection programs. The meeting strengthened alignment across Consortium partners, bringing together expertise and efforts across all workstreams to deliver integrated, practical, and scalable solutions. Looking ahead, C4RPWC will focus on validating and deploying promising technologies, strengthening surveillance and biological control, building national capacity, and scaling integrated solutions to help protect date palms and the livelihoods that depend on them. 🌴 Strengthening field data collection for better Red Palm Weevil management. Agricultural and extension engineers from وزارة التغير المناخي والبيئة Ministry of Climate Change and Environment and Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority ADAFSA completed a one day intensive training workshop on Open Data Kit (ODK), a digital platform for collecting and managing field data, organized by the Consortium for the Red Palm Weevil Control Program (C4RPWC) in collaboration with International Center for Biosaline Agriculture (ICBA) in 📍Dubai. The training was delivered by Mr. Khaled Al-Sham’aa, ICARDA Associate Scientist – Biometrics and brought together participants representing key date palm growing regions across the United Arab Emirates. The attendees received practical training on the digital data collection tools that will support field activities across 400 farms under the Consortium’s research and validation program. By strengthening the capacity of frontline extension teams and supporting the collection of high quality field data, C4RPWC is helping generate the evidence needed to advance science based red palm weevil management and protect date palms across the United Arab Emirates and the wider region. For more than four decades, ICARDA; International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas has worked hand in hand with Egypt to advance agricultural innovation and strengthen agri-food systems. Our long-standing partnership continues to deliver science-based solutions that help Egyptian farmers adapt to climate change while protecting natural resources. In Egypt, ICARDA works closely with national partners across a wide range of agricultural priorities, including climate-resilient crops, sustainable farming systems, water management, digital agriculture, desert agriculture, and strategic value chains. My sincere thanks to H.E. Alaa Farouk Egypt's Minister of Agriculture and Land Reclamation for recognizing ICARDA's scientific contributions, and to Dr. Adel Abdel Azeem, President of ARC Egypt, for the continued collaboration. Research on increasing their voice and influence in food, land and water systems governance is essential to ensure policies address their needs, equitably distribute benefits and transform power dynamics. How can we strengthen the leadership, voice and influence of women, youth and Indigenous people and socially excluded groups in food, land and water systems? Some recommendations from the CGIAR GENDER Conference: ➡️ Co-design inclusive and participatory solutions by engaging women, youth Indigenous peoples and marginalized groups from the outset of policy and innovation processes, ensuring their lived experiences shape design, implementation and scaling. ➡️ Promote bundled socio-technical innovations that combine access to information, finance, training and collective platforms to enhance agency, adoption and sustained participation in food, land and water systems. ➡️ Develop and apply robust tools to measure voice and agency by combining participatory methods, gender-disaggregated indicators and frameworks such as Reach–Benefit–Empower–Transform (RBET) to capture not only participation but real and perceived influence and decision-making power. ➡️ Strengthen evidence through rigorous impact evaluation by integrating. causal methods (e.g., experimental and quasi-experimental designs) with mixed-method approaches to assess both individual and collective outcomes of inclusion and leadership interventions. ➡️ Institutionalize meaningful participation and visible leadership by embedding inclusive governance mechanisms within policies, organizations and value chains, ensuring women and youth move beyond representation to actual influence. ➡️ Engage a wider ecosystem of actors to shift norms and systems by involving men, community leaders, policymakers and private sector actors to codesign programs to support women’s leadership, address structural barriers and transform restrictive gender norms at scale and institutionalize meaningful influence and decision-making power within governance structures. 🇲🇦 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐭 𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐧𝐞𝐠𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐜𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐬 𝐛𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐨 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬? On 24 June, 56 participants gathered at the Agricultural School of Temara in Morocco for a NUSTALGIC Recipe Day bringing together food science, live cooking and a lively conversation about gender roles in the kitchen. 🌱 Lentils, chickpeas, fava beans and barley took centre stage — crops with deep roots in local food traditions and important nutritional and environmental value. 🍲 Three chefs showed what these ingredients can become, preparing chickpea salad, creamy fava bean and shrimp soup, and lentil salad. 🥄 A session on “Rethinking Cooking — A Shared Skill, Not a Gender Role” also invited participants to reflect on how cooking and household responsibilities are shared and valued. 𝗗𝗶𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘀? Among the 42 participants surveyed before and after the event, women rating their knowledge of legume nutrition “to a great extent” rose from 22% to 50%, while those strongly agreeing that men can cook for their families increased from 39% to 53%. For PRIMA Partnership NUSTALGIC, Recipe Days are about more than delicious culinary events. Our mission is to revitalise neglected, climate resilient crops. Developing better crop varieties is only part of the NUSTALGIC journey. Their adoption also depends on farmers choosing to grow them, markets finding value in them, and consumers wanting to put them on their plates. That means working across the full journey of adoption - from crop to consumer choice. The event was organised by ICARDA; International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas with Directorate of Education, Training and Research (DEFR) of Ministère de l'Agriculture, de la Pêche Maritime, du Développement Rural et des Eaux et Forêts, the Agricultural School of Temara and the Specialized Institute of Applied Technology in Hotel and Tourism.
