Relying on one crop can leave farmers more exposed when rainfall is uncertain or harvests fall short. Fourrow strip cropping offers a practical way to spread that risk. In Eastern Zambia, farmers are growing maize and legumes in planned strips, then rotating them in subsequent seasons. The system helps diversify production, use land more efficiently, and reduce dependence on a single crop. Maize continues to support household food security, while legumes such as soybean, groundnut, and cowpea can contribute to soil fertility, nutrition, and income. Through the EU-funded SIFAZ project, CIMMYT is working with farmers to test different practices under local conditions and identify what works best in their fields. Farmers are willing to pay for better crop protection, but limited awareness is keeping that demand from fully emerging. Research across Malawi, Tanzania, and Zambia explored how farmers value maize, soybean, and groundnut seed developed to tolerate fall armyworm, rust, and rosette disease. The study found that farmers who knew about tolerant and resistant varieties were willing to pay more for them. Yet awareness remained low. In Zambia, only 7% of surveyed farmers knew about fall armyworm tolerant maize, compared with 19% in Malawi and 42% in Tanzania. Through research on seed demand and adoption, CIMMYT is helping identify the barriers that keep improved varieties from reaching more farmers. The findings point to practical ways to strengthen extension, local seed availability, agro-dealer knowledge, and trusted communication, helping turn scientific progress into informed demand. 🌾 You can't see it or taste it, but zinc shapes how children grow and how bodies heal. Around 2 billion people worldwide don't get enough of it, with rates as high as 30% across South Asia. 🔬 For years, enriching crops with zinc was treated as a niche add-on. That's changing. Wheat breeders across CGIAR, CIMMYT and national programs are now building zinc directly into their best breeding lines, so the nutrition travels with the traits farmers already want: higher yields, disease resistance and climate resilience. The results are already on the ground. In Pakistan, the zinc-enriched variety Akbar-19 now covers half the country's wheat area, and more than two dozen high-zinc varieties span over 6 million hectares across South Asia.
