The International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) is a non-profit, non-political organization that conducts agricultural research for development in Asia and sub-Saharan Africa with a wide array of partners throughout the world. Covering 6.5 million square kilometers of land in 55 countries, the semi-arid or dryland tropics has over 2 billion people, and 644 million of these are the poorest of the poor. ICRISAT and its partners help empower these poor people to overcome poverty, hunger and a degraded environment through better agriculture. ICRISAT is headquartered in Hyderabad, Telangana, India, with two regional hubs and six country offices in sub-Saharan Africa. It is a member of the CGIAR Consortium. CGIAR is a global agriculture research partnership for a food secure future. ICRISAT challenges this pessimistic view. Working with diverse partners in Asia and sub-Saharan Africa for almost four decades, ICRISAT has found that dryland farmers are ingenious and resourceful. By applying scientific innovations backed up with adequate policy, Vision, mission and approach ICRISAT envisions a prosperous, food-secure and resilient dryland tropics. To achieve this, our mission is to reduce poverty, hunger, malnutrition and environmental degradation in the dryland tropics. Today, ICRISAT welcomed 39 participants from 19 countries to the two-week international training program, Mastering Technology Transfer: A Global Pathway for Developing Countries, being held from 27 July to 7 August 2026 under the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) program of the Ministry of External Affairs, India. Organized by the ICRISAT South-South Cooperation in Agriculture (#ISSCA), and ICRISAT's Dryland Academy the course aims to strengthen participants' understanding of technology transfer processes and equip them with practical approaches to ensure innovations reach the stakeholders who need them most. The program was inaugurated by Dr Himanshu Pathak, Director General of ICRISAT. Dr Dr. Stanford (Stan) Blade, KSLA, Deputy Director General – Research and Innovation welcomed the participants and encouraged them to learn from one another's experiences and exchange ideas. Dr Surya Mani Tripathi, Ph.D., LL.B, RTTP, Global Head - Legal Services, ICRISAT, introduced the participants to ISSCA initiative and its role in strengthening collaboration among developing countries through capacity building, knowledge exchange, and technology transfer to advance sustainable agricultural development.

Was pleased to spend part of my sabatical leave in India, visiting the International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage (ICID) in Delhi, and the International Crops Research Institute for the Semiarid Tropics (ICRISAT) in Patancheru. I had the priviledge of serving as President of ICID from 2008-2011. I also had the honour to be a Trustee of ICRISAT for 8 years, and a highlight was to serve as Chair of the Board of Trustees from 2014-2017. While at ICRISAT I was invited to give a seminar on the expected changes in the drylands, in light of climate change, and the resultant effects on carbon storage and greenhouse gas emissions. I also had a chance to visit some of the field experiments on sorghum and millet.

Our genebanks do not operate in isolation - they are constantly sharing ideas, techniques and processes. A big part of this is our Peer Review program, where experts from the CGIAR system (and beyond) visit their peers at individual genebanks to offer feedback with fresh eyes on how to refine operations and ask the right questions. The most recent took place last week at the International Potato Center (CIP) genebank in Lima, Peru 🇵🇪, following another in April at the Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT genebank in Leuven, Belgium 🇧🇪. Reviewers are given free rein to poke around and ask difficult questions on topics like: ⚠️ Risk management 📋 Standard Operating Procedures 🎓 Staff training 🔬 Equipment calibration 🧭 Strategic direction Our colleagues consistently tell us how valuable these visits are as a chance to step back from daily activity and focus on driving up standards and improving efficiency to serve breeders, researchers, and farmers globally. They also help with preparations for external reviews led by the Crop Trust. This is a tangible example of the benefits to our genebanks of being part of a wider CGIAR community. The aim is for each of our 11 genebanks to have a peer review every three years. Next stop: the ICARDA; International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas genebank in Morocco 🇲🇦 in July. 🙏 Many thanks to our reviewers Muzamil Baig and Theo van Hintum, and all of our colleagues for engaging so constructively in the process.
