Safety training: wind edition 🌬️ When your workplace is 90 metres above ground, safety is the number one priority. 👉 That’s exactly why we regularly practice something we hope is never necessary: an emergency evacuation from a wind turbine. The exercise itself (as shown in these clips from Hitra wind farm in Norway) is where our teams test the equipment, their technique and cooperation in a situation where the elevator in the tower can’t be used. Our goal, of course, is simple: that everyone comes home from work safely. 💙

Aaaaaand, lift… 🏗️ 😲 The team at Rana hydropower plant has been getting its lift on. 👉Recently, they had the job of fully dismantling a unit four turbine wheel as part of the replacement of hydropower turbines at the plant. The work is going well and according to the progress plan, but that doesn’t mean it was easy. What you’re seeing here is one of the most critical and demanding parts of this dismantling process: lifting off the ‘small’ turbine lid. Interestingly, though, it wasn’t necessarily the weight that made it a tricky job. Space is at a premium at Rana, which is a comparatively cramped hydropower station. This means that removing parts and components like this turbine lid becomes an interesting engineering challenge. The work demanded safe, steady, skilled hands, which is exactly what we had on site (in addition to great vendor support). In carrying out the lift, an important part of the prep was naturally a host of calculations and measurements, but there was one other key part of their planning: simulating what happens when the cover is turned from horizontal to vertical while being lifted. *GULP* 👀 Finally, for the competitive folks among you, the question for today is: exactly what does the upper lid of this turbine wheel actually weigh❓ If you want to guess, drop a suggestion in the comments, otherwise, find out for yourself on the last page of the carousel.

A reforesting wind farm? 🌳 That's the plan. The spruce forest at the site of this wind farm project in Germany is being significantly damaged by drought and bark beetles. But there's good news: there are plans afoot to reforest the damaged areas using income from the land lease. The result could be a beautiful, climate-champion of a forest *and* clean energy for the benefit of many generations to come. 👇 📖

🍅 Solar power and tomatoes, cucumber, watermelon, lettuce, fennel, broccoli, and spinach... all in one place? Yes: something innovative is happening in beautiful Bari! We're collaborating with the Università degli Studi di Barii to assess which crops can best flourish in the same space as photovoltaic systems (aka solar farms). ☀️ ➡️ Construction is well underway, and over the timeline of the project, research partners will assess and track things such as cultivation and mechanisation needs, production and harvesting techniques, the type of photovoltaic systems and the environmental impact.

Our first EVER wind farm in Peru! 🌬️ 🥇 In a major milestone for our operations in Peru, we’re adding the first ever wind farm to our portfolio: Emma. Emma isn’t just unique because it’s a first. The project also has some of the best possible wind conditions with capacity factors above 50%. Located in Piura in northern Peru, the wind farm (once constructed) will generate 325GWh of energy annually. Once the project is finished, Statkraft’s footprint in Peru will include the most prominent renewable technologies: hydropower, solar power, and wind! Proof that good things really do come in threes ☺️

We’re planning to upgrade this 78-year-old hydropower plant 🛠️ 🔙 The year Mår hydropower plant first entered into operation, The Treasure of the Sierra Madre was premiering in cinemas and Harry Truman was the U.S. President. This is to say that Mår has been producing renewable energy for a LONG time. Just this week, we sent a concession to Norway’s Water Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE), seeking approval to carry out upgrades to Mår. 👷♂️👷♀️ As part of Statkraft’s 70 billion NOK investments in in Norway in the coming years, the intention is to upgrade the existing hydropower plant at, resulting in a 13% expected increase in its production capacity. The upgrade will be no small engineering feat, as it will involve the creation of a new power plant approximately 1,000 metres further into the mountain, as well as moving the intake lake higher up in altitude. These changes will enable Mår to produce more energy faster and contribute to reducing electricity prices during periods of high usage. 💪
