Every day, sawmills produce significant volumes of by-products such as sawdust, wood chips and bark. While many of these materials already have uses, large quantities can still present operational and environmental challenges. At BurnWood SA, we are exploring engineering solutions that could convert suitable biomass by-products into electricity through innovative and practical technology. Our focus is on research, prototype development and building partnerships to investigate how these underutilised resources could create value for industry and contribute to a more sustainable future.

[Japan PV recycling - R&D / Technology topic] Hokkaido Research Organization published research report on proper disposal of waste PV modules based on regional characteristics (Previously published topic) - The Hokkaido Research Organization published a project report investigating the proper disposal and regional distribution of end-of-life photovoltaic panels to prepare for future mass-disposal in Hokkaido. - The research integrated unconventional methodologies such as geocoding, satellite remote sensing for identifying panel locations, and geospatial analysis to simulate transportation routes to controlled landfill sites. - The report highlighted specific regional challenges, including uneven geographical distribution of solar installations, limited capacity at accessible landfills, and high transportation costs over Hokkaido's extensive land area, emphasizing the need for an optimized regional collection and recycling framework. Can plasma-activated water improve root development while maintaining biomass? Our latest study demonstrates that continuous-flow Plasma-Activated Water (PAW) significantly enhances pea microgreen root development while maintaining comparable fresh biomass. Key findings: 🌱 Up to 80% thicker root layer 💧 Near-neutral pH with elevated ORP ⚡ Continuous-flow plasma reactor for scalable PAW production 🌍 A promising sustainable technology for controlled-environment agriculture. The most important improvements happen where they are not immediately visible—below the surface. 🧪🌍 How do you make essential chemicals without the climate cost? Together with the University of Twente (coordinator) and more than forty other universities, companies and knowledge institutes, WUR receives €20.3 million through NWO/GroenvermogenNL for research into sustainable production of nitrogen-based chemicals, such as fertilisers and medicines. The HyNITROGEN project starts this October. Today, these essential chemicals are produced using fossil fuels, resulting in large CO2 emmisions. This promising project aims to develop new production methods by exploring new catalysts, renewable electricity and nitrogen recovery from wastewater. WUR's prof. Harry Bitter, Professor of Biobased Chemistry & Technology, is one of the project's technical managers. Together with his research group, he focuses on developing new catalysts that could enable the reaction at lower pressure and temperature. 👉 Swipe through the slides to learn more.

Jure Vetršek (IRI UL - Institute for Innovation and Development of University of Ljubljana) explains how INFINITE has also helped build something that will last beyond the project: new skills and local value chains.
