Within this research trend, the library's geospatial service can play an active role by introducing the spatial information literacy and technology. In this paper, we use the information literacy framework to explore the library's role in supporting digital humanities by introducing a successful collaboration involving a librarian and history and education researchers in hosting a National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH)-funded summer institute for school teachers. Our results suggest that the framework has opened a new way to facilitate collaborations between librarians and multidiscipline researchers.

We describe the impact of an African American history centred collaborative teacher study group (... more We describe the impact of an African American history centred collaborative teacher study group (CTSG) professional development experience on the cultural competence of 20 secondary Social Studies and English Language Arts educators. Using mixed methods, baseline data indicated slight movement from the colourblind to the cultural pre-competence level for most. Race, as a fixed category, slightly impacted the increase in participants' cultural competence levels. Gender and teaching experience, however, had little if any impact on cultural competence levels. Selected interviews suggested that participants recognised the importance of teaching with diversity in mind. Yet, many acknowledge lacking the skillset to adequately meet the linguistic and cultural diversity of their students. Overall, participants noted that the professional development experience broadens their cultural competence awareness and would influence their instruction practice.

We summarize the extent to which the articles in this issue help us take a new look at classroom practices of teachers within higher education and K-12 spaces, and re-envision of educational policies and theoretical frameworks within and beyond learning spaces to enhance inclusivity.

Racism coupled with health and economic disparities predispose Black youth to adverse political engagement, political efficacy, and social emotional outcomes. The COVID-19 pandemic has aggravated pandemic-induced stressors such as the current experiences of Black youth with racial injustice and the potential of economic insecurity, homelessness, and a health disaster affecting a family member, further challenge their political engagement and political efficacy. In this theoretical piece, we therefore bring forth two separate, yet compatible theoretical frameworks, Black Resilience Neoliberalism (BRN) and the sociopolitical development model (SPD), to grasp the racialized identity and the political efficacy of adolescent Black youth in an era of crises.

Yes, context matters : character education in secondary social studies

Character education supports the moral and civic development of youth in the United States (US), its popularity continues with policymakers, parents, and educators; in fact, 18 states codify character education legislation. Members of majority groups often are unmindful of the significance and scope of cultural distinctiveness in the lives of minority individuals. Rather, majority group members consciously or unconsciously advocate assimilation and adherence to universal virtues, particularly in the field of character education. Cultural-historical conditions, as dimensions of the moral development process, tone the agency and negotiation of character education. To that end, this essay employs Charles Mills’ The Racial Contract (1998) to not only account for the moralities of exclusion, but put forward a character education philosophy that accounts for cultural distinctiveness

She seemed puzzled at the question posed. Seated at a table in her classroom, she tried to convey character education's connectivity to and role within the social studies. Her response (the above quotation) reflected her beliefs and values, and it echoed a clear understanding that both character education and the social studies seek similar ends--crafting responsible citizenship to improve society. Mary's explanation presented a structure of beliefs and justifications motivating her inclinations to teach character. Such motivations signified changes in her character practice, particularly how character education, the social studies, and citizenship development interacted in her classroom environment. Mary ended her response by stating: So we're negligent if we don&...

A beginning teacher, she had a classroom to organize. There were desks to arrange, learning centers to create, and posters to affix to the walls. Jennifer also needed to prioritize her teaching and learning goals for the coming year. She realized the value of bringing thoughtful social studies to the forefront of her second grade classroom. Jennifer wanted a classroom that would nurture emerging citizens. She hoped that, if she created a caring classroom environment:
