What influences feeding practices among children with severe acute malnutrition? A new study from Ethiopia examined the factors associated with infant and young child feeding practices among children aged 6–23 months receiving treatment for severe acute malnutrition. The researchers found that: ⚡ Caregiver literacy was associated with a higher likelihood of meeting minimum meal frequency and minimum dietary diversity. ⚡ Caregiver dietary diversity and access to an improved water source were also associated with better dietary diversity among children. ⚡ Caregiver depression, mobility restrictions, and household food insecurity were associated with a lower likelihood of meeting minimum dietary diversity. Why do so many children with severe acute malnutrition still miss treatment? A new study from Ethiopia found that only 12.8% of children aged 6–59 months with severe acute malnutrition were receiving treatment. Researchers identified several of the most commonly reported barriers, including: ✨ Lack of awareness of the child’s nutritional status ✨ Time and financial constraints ✨ Absence of family permission The study also found that treatment coverage was higher among households with recent community MUAC screening, access to nearby treatment services, use of water treatment methods, possession of a vaccination card, and higher household wealth. 📌 Missed this week’s Evidence for Africa? Can one fertilizer subsidy program achieve different policy goals? This new IFPRI study highlights an important challenge for fertilizer subsidy programs. In Kenya, researchers find that the farmers who would maximize productivity are generally not the same households as the poorest and most vulnerable. As a result, targeting for one objective may not automatically achieve the other. #Blog: Global crude rose 70% during the recent Iran conflict, but its impact on African food systems reveals a striking truth: domestic pricing structures matter far more than global shocks. 🌍⛽   New analysis by Kalle Hirvonen, Katrina Kosec, & Kibrom Abay shows a massive split: diesel prices spiked 86% in deregulated Nigeria but stayed completely flat in several francophone nations.   While food prices remain stable for now, shielding consumers through costly fuel subsidies is draining national budgets, meaning a major fiscal reckoning is simply being deferred. 📉   The long-term fix?
