Delivering improvements to a live building requires careful planning, close collaboration and specialist expertise. Teams from across the andwis Group Fire & Security discipline, led by Custom Intelligent Security, will be working alongside Meesons, on the upgrade of the existing entrance revolving doors at 22–26 Whitehall, while the building remains fully occupied in the Heart of Westminster. Projects of this nature demand a balance between maintaining security, minimising disruption and ensuring a seamless experience for occupiers and visitors throughout the works. By bringing together expertise in electronic security and intelligent entrance solutions, our teams deliver an integrated approach that supports both operational requirements and the user experience. Our people are at the heart of everything we do at andwis. Over the coming weeks, we'll be shining a spotlight on some of the talented people who make our business what it is today. From apprentices taking their first steps into the industry to long-serving colleagues who have built successful careers across the Group, we'll be sharing their stories, celebrating their achievements and showcasing the opportunities available within technical and compliance services. We're delighted to kick off the series with Tamara Hobden, the first female Lift Engineer in the andwis Group. Tamara's journey is a powerful example of what can be achieved through curiosity, determination and a willingness to step outside your comfort zone. She joined the business at 18 as an agency temp answering the phones before securing an administration apprenticeship. Over the next 14 years, she built a career across administration, invoicing and estimating. While working in estimating, Tamara realised she wanted a deeper understanding of the equipment she was pricing and the solutions being delivered to customers. Rather than accepting the gap in her knowledge, she decided to become an engineer. Before starting her training, Tamara self-funded an NVQ Level 2 Electrical Engineering qualification, using annual leave to complete an intensive course. She then embarked on a three-year programme, studying for an NVQ in Mechanical & Electrical Engineering Maintenance while gaining hands-on experience across repairs, maintenance and refurbishment projects. Working alongside experienced engineers, she progressed from supporting repairs and refurbishments to managing her own route and local hospital contract. What began as a desire to improve her technical knowledge quickly became a passion for engineering. The culmination of three years of hard work came when Tamara completed her final assessments, including a practical examination, professional interview and technical assessments, all while eight months pregnant with her daughter. Tamara passed with flying colours and is now enjoying maternity leave before returning to her engineering career. Reflecting on her journey, Tamara says being a woman in a traditionally male-dominated industry never held her back. If anything, it made her more determined to succeed. She credits the engineers she worked alongside for sharing their knowledge, supporting her development and encouraging her every step of the way. "You can achieve anything with a bit of hard work." Her story is a fantastic example of the opportunities available across the andwis Group and what can be achieved when talent, ambition and determination are supported by the right training and encouragement. The future of the fire and security industry depends on the people we invest in today. That's why Senseco is expanding its commitment to developing the next generation of engineers with the opening of a new, larger training academy in Sidcup, Kent. Building on the success of our Gillingham facility, the new academy has been designed to provide practical, hands-on training across fire alarms, security systems, passive fire protection and sprinkler systems, helping engineers develop the skills needed to protect increasingly complex buildings and infrastructure. But this isn't just about apprentices. The academy will also support the ongoing development of experienced engineers and provide a dedicated space where customers can see systems in action, helping shape solutions for major projects and critical infrastructure. Working safely in extreme heat means planning ahead. Simple steps can make a big difference: • Stay hydrated throughout the day, not just when you feel thirsty • Take regular breaks in shaded or cooler areas where possible • Wear appropriate PPE and lightweight clothing where permitted • Look out for the signs of heat exhaustion in yourself and others • Adjust work schedules where practical to avoid the hottest parts of the day At andwis, the wellbeing of our people is every bit as important as the work they do.
