We’re happy to announce the planning consent for our residential scheme for Bywater at Coombe Road. The brownfield site in south-west London has not been in use for five years following the closure of the former Regents Wing at Kingston hospital. In a departure from conventional residential block design, an ensemble of three octagonal tree-like structures are clad in varying tones of zinc. Landscape flows freely around the recessed ground floors with their faceted brick facades, allowing light and vistas between the buildings. The six-storey buildings are designed to prioritise the wellness of their occupants, with good daylight, ventilation, natural materials, and access to landscaped amenity spaces. A lightweight timber structure will deliver 150 build-to-rent homes complemented by shared areas including a gym, lounge and workspace. Gaining consent for timber-framed residential buildings in London is significant, especially at six storeys. Although the number of timber-framed homes built in England has risen from 9% to 15% over the past six years, this is still low compared to over 90% in Scotland. Construction will begin on site later this year.

In unserer Serie zum Gebäudetyp-e stellen wir die bayerischen Pilotprojekte vor. 🔎📄🏗️ Wir hinterfragen und reduzieren die gewohnten Standards im Reallabor: Die Münchner Wohnen plant die Modernisierung eines Quartiers an der Angler- und Heimeranstraße auf der Schwanthalerhöhe. Es umfasst sieben Gebäude aus den Jahren 1901 bis 1987. Teile sind denkmalgeschützt. Deshalb muss ein sinnvoller Umgang mit unterschiedlichen Bauweisen und Zuständen im Bestand entwickelt werden. Das Projekt auf der Schwanthalerhöhe: 🔹 Umsetzung in zwei Bauabschnitten bis 2031: Die Gebäude werden umfassend modernisiert, Gewerbe wird teilweise zu Wohnraum umgewandelt und Dachräume werden ausgebaut. So entstehen ca. 64 Mietwohnungen. 🔹 Neuer bezahlbarer Wohnraum entsteht. Full House bei "Forest to Frame" – 75 Gäste und jede Menge Gesprächsstoff: Ende Mai kamen Frontrunners und Partnerinnen des Built by Nature Germany Netzwerks sowie weitere Interessierte aus der gesamten Wertschöpfungskette Holz zusammen – Architektinnen, Forstexperten, Bauherrinnen, Urbanisten, Politik, Medien und Studierende. Der Ort selbst hätte passender nicht sein können: Das Neue Schleiermacherhaus ist die radikale Neuinterpretation eines historischen Barockbaus in Berlin-Mitte. Die Architekten und Frontrunners dRMM (Tonia Tkachenko und Jonas Lencer) zeigten, wie sie es geschafft haben, Berlins barocke Stadterweiterung mit modernem Holzbau zu versöhnen, und damit ein gesundes wie denkmalgerechtes Haus zu schaffen und gleichzeitig den CO₂-Fußabdruck drastisch zu senken. Unser Network Lead Paul Bostanjoglo / Bauhaus Earth machte in seinem Vortrag klar: Mit seiner starken Forstwirtschaft und Baukultur hat Deutschland eigentlich alles, um beim naturbasierten Bauen selbst ganz vorne mitzuspielen. Er stellte außerdem die Principles for Sustainable Timber Construction vor – ein wichtiges Instrument, um eine nachhaltige Holzwirtschaft breiter zu verankern. Pablo van der Lugt (TU Delft) räumte mit "Debunking Myths" mit hartnäckigen Vorurteilen gegenüber dem Holzbau auf und initiierte damit auch eine wichtige Diskussion über Kosten von Holzbau und die Bepreisung von CO₂-Emissionen. Zum Abschluss gab es den Dokumentarfilm "Our Future: Built by Nature" (2025), der sechs wegweisenden Projekten vom Wald bis zum fertigen Bau folgt und dabei überzeugend eine Lanze für den Holzbau bricht. 🌳 Could England’s underutilised woodlands be a key part of the future of sustainable construction? 🏢 The three-year Building from England’s Woodlands (BFEW) project shows that English deciduous broadleaf forests hold significant, untapped potential for low-carbon building systems. Led by NMITE alongside Edinburgh Napier University, Built Environment - Smarter Transformation, Ecosystems Technologies Ltd, and dRMM, this pioneering research is challenging old assumptions about homegrown timber - and the range of useful species available. 💡 Key Innovations & Takeaways: The Hybrid Breakthrough: The project successfully developed hybrid engineered timber products (CLT and glulam) that combine local hardwood and softwood. They passed all strength and durability criteria using existing manufacturing methods. Material Efficiency: Using English hardwood in key structural zones enabled 10–15% material savings, paving the way for lighter, more efficient building designs. Boosting the Local Economy: Shifting toward domestic timber reduces our reliance on imports, cuts embodied carbon, and directly strengthens rural economies through local manufacturing. 🏛️ See it in the Real World: The research has already jumped from the lab to the physical world: At the Victoria and Albert Museum: Check out the “Building from Forests” display in the furniture gallery at the Victoria & Albert Museum (South Kensington) running until 30 October 2026. In Structural Use: A hybrid hardwood-softwood glulam beam has already been installed in NMITE’s new Skills Hub building in Hereford. For the past few years we have been working with leading experts from forestry, wood science, timber manufacturing and construction to explore how English-grown timber can be used more effectively in modern building systems. The summary report of that research is released today, bringing together the findings from the three year study: https://lnkd.in/eW4UK6TV These challenge long-standing perceptions about the suitability of homegrown timber for construction. A key innovation emerging from the research is the development of hybrid engineered timber products that optimally combine hardwood and softwood within the same structural element. All this marks an important step towards a future where forests, manufacturing, and construction work together to create sustainable buildings while supporting healthier landscapes and stronger local economies. With continued investment in research, commercialisation, and skills development, England’s woodlands could become a cornerstone of a lower-carbon, more resilient built environment for generations to come. Am 29. Mai 2026 war Spatenstich für ein neues Studierendenwohnheim im Potsdamer Entwicklungsgebiet Rote Kaserne West. ZRS Architekten Ingenieure begleitet das Projekt in der Vergabe- und Bauphase; Entwurf und Planung stammen von dRMM. 161 Wohneinheiten, über 300 Studierende, rund 300 m² Gewerbefläche. Das Ensemble aus viergeschossigen Einzelgebäuden interpretiert die Typologie der Vorstadtvilla in zeitgenössischer Architektursprache. Die Konstruktion basiert auf hybrider Holzbauweise mit CLT-Tragwerk und Holzrahmen-Fassaden. Bauherr ist ProPotsdam GmbH, Nutzer das Studierendenwerk West:Brandenburg.
