It was an absolute joy to be able to formally open our new, state-of-the-art, 15-chair practice in Weston-super-Mare earlier this month. The team have put a tremendous amount of effort into getting the practice patient-ready and backed by an investment of £2 million, I am certain that its circa 15,000 patients and the wider community will love it. To mark the new practice officially opening its doors, we held a ribbon cutting event to celebrate the hard work and dedication of the team, who bring together decades of experience and commitment to patient care. Many of the clinicians and colleagues at mydentist (UK) Weston-super-Mare have provided support to the community for an impressive 10+ years individually, and have ensured continuity of care and expertise during the move from the old sites on Oxford Street and Beaconsfield Road to the new practice on Gallagher Retail Park. It’s fantastic to also welcome some new colleagues to mydentist as a result of being able to move and expand the practice. The conversations at this year's ADG Conference show that we have lots to be optimistic about for the future of UK dentistry. It was a pleasure to join my peers Anushika Brogan and HARRY GILL for an energised panel discussion on the anatomy of an intelligent dental business, chaired by Julian Perry. In a world where AI dominates headlines and strategies, it’s easy to think technology is the answer to everything. But sustainable success isn’t built on AI alone, or on scale for scale’s sake. It’s about building businesses with a clear purpose, strong values, a positive culture and an operating model grounded in clinical excellence. Data helps us understand where we've been, technology helps us operate more effectively, but long-term success comes from creating organisations where colleagues feel valued, patients receive excellent care and everyone understands their role in a shared vision. And yes, I referred to patients as customers. Dentistry will always be about delivering outstanding clinical care, but today many patients also have choices about how they engage, the experience they receive and the outcomes they want. As dentistry evolves, one of our greatest opportunities is understanding those expectations and supporting people throughout their journey. So, transformation in dentistry is not an option, it is a requirement to meet the evolving needs of patients and customers. And that only happens if employed and self-employed colleagues feel supported and valued for the amazing work they do every day. Dentists, nurses and practice colleagues enter the profession to make a positive difference. The success of any dental business is therefore based on colleagues sharing mutual respect, clinical excellence and trust. And that comes from creating great systems, developing exceptional people, maintaining high clinical standards and building a culture that remains strong even when the business is under pressure. These principles apply as much to single practice owners as they do to larger organisations like mydentist (UK). I'm often asked what it takes to be successful in managing a large dental group, with the presumption that this is harder than running a single practice. For me, it takes a special kind of person to have the risk-appetite, confidence and drive to invest in their own practice. These entrepreneurs are the real heroes. To those looking to grow their own groups, my advice is simple: be disciplined in how you acquire and integrate practices, and always put your colleagues and patients first. Thank you to Neil Carmichael, The ADG team, Craig Welling and the FMC team for bringing the sector together, and to my fellow panellists for such an insightful discussion. Ultimately, the strength of dentistry is, above all else, about people. 🎉 Congratulations to Owen Leonard on qualifying as a Dental Nurse at mydentist Woodbridge. Owen has become the first apprentice dental nurse across mydentist to successfully complete the Tempdent course, marking a significant milestone in our partnership with Tempdent and an incredible personal achievement. Making the achievement even more impressive, Owen completed his apprenticeship eight weeks ahead of schedule, with his qualification originally due in early August. Reflecting on his journey, Owen said: “Working at mydentist Woodbridge has been one of the greatest chapters of my career so far. I was given the opportunity to complete the dental nurse apprenticeship and this wouldn’t have been possible without the support of my mentor Kirsty and my manager Jo Neal. They are both always there for support. The Tempdent course was very easy to navigate and I believe I have been given the best knowledge and skills available to help me further my career."
