📊 More than two-thirds of FTSE 100 companies revised previously reported climate and sustainability metrics last year, according to a Deloitte review reported by the Financial Times. The analysis found that 69 FTSE 100 companies made prior-year adjustments to sustainability metrics, up from 46 the previous year. Most greenhouse gas-related revisions involve Scope 3 emissions, which often represent the largest share of a company's emissions footprint and are among the most challenging to measure accurately. This is particularly relevant for net zero assessments. Net Zero Tracker data shows that among large companies with a net zero target, 48% currently have full Scope 1–3 coverage, rising to 60% in Europe. This indicates meaningful, if uneven, progress in an area where most corporate emissions typically sit. One response we're seeing to this measurement challenge is sector-level coordination: H&M Group, for instance, is co-financing supplier decarbonisation alongside other fashion brands, on the basis that shared investment reduces both cost and duplication of effort across common supply chains. This kind of pre-competitive collaboration depends on consistent, transparent underlying data to function, which is precisely where robust Scope 3 tracking becomes a precondition for action rather than just a reporting exercise. As climate disclosure systems mature, revisions to historical data may become an increasingly important consideration for anyone interpreting corporate emissions data and tracking progress over time. Tesla has set a company-wide net zero target for the first time, committing to reach net zero across its value chain by 2040. The announcement marks a significant shift in the company's climate strategy, although it has not yet been accompanied by a near-term emissions target or detailed transition plan. The move has also revived debate around how corporate climate action is assessed. As Frederic Hans, Senior Climate Policy Advisor at NZT partner, NewClimate Institute, noted: "We agree that traditional target-setting frameworks centred on absolute emission reduction can disadvantage innovators entering a market while favouring incumbents." At the same time, Hans argues that automakers should complement net zero targets with clear transition targets covering the production and purchase of low-carbon batteries, steel and aluminium. According to NewClimate Institute, Tesla's latest report does not include such targets. Volunteer Spotlight: Freda Amakiri 🇳🇬 Freda Amakiri is a Net Zero Tracker volunteer based in Lagos, Nigeria. Since joining the project in July 2025, she has tracked net zero commitments across countries, cities, financial institutions, fossil fuel companies, and other major sectors. Drawn to NZT through her interest in the energy transition, Freda is particularly interested in understanding how commitments translate into real world action, and where gaps remain between ambition and implementation. Over the past year, Freda has collected data on 66 entities, with a focus on African entities and fossil fuel companies. We're incredibly grateful for Freda's contribution to the project and look forward to celebrating her 100th entity milestone soon. A decade of #NetZero commitments, in one dataset. Yesterday, together with our partners at the Net Zero Tracker, we launched the 📊 Historical Time Series Dataset, covering more than 4,000 countries, states and regions, cities, and companies from 2015 to 2026. Most tracking tools show a snapshot of who has a target right now. Our dataset shows the movement behind it - how commitments strengthen (or don't), how climate leadership spreads, and how targets shift alongside political and economic change. Today we launched our Net Zero Tracker time-series data, which you can download for free to look at changes in company, country, city, and region climate targets since 2015: https://zerotracker.net/ I find the cross-country, cross-time context so helpful. Yes, we are seeing some major backsliding on climate, especially in North America, and media is right to shine a light on this (as David Gelles did this week in a helpful NYT piece https://lnkd.in/ehHrVbX7). But the number of companies setting new net zero targets continue to rise in every region of the world, and the pace over the past few years in Asia, Latin America, and Africa is pretty fast. We are in the messy, tough era of implementation and fluctuation. As Gonzalo Muñoz Abogabir CMG always says: for a 'long problem' like climate change, you have to look at the movie, not just the snapshot. Now with this time-series data, the whole climate "Odyssey" is coming into view. 2025 fairly flat so far. Watch this space.
