Aim The role of enoxaparin and weight-adjusted unfractionated heparin (UH) as adjunct to fibrinolytic therapy in pulmonary embolism is unknown. Methods In a prospective, open-label, controlled multicenter trial, 80 patients with high-risk pulmonary embolism were enrolled. Forty patients received alteplase infusion plus weight-adjusted UH (24–48 h) and then enoxaparin (7 days). In control group, UH standard regimen was used. There were not differences on pulmonary embolism extension, (P 0.63) and right ventricular hypokinesis (P 0.07) in both groups. In terms of in-hospital survival (P 0.009), escalation treatment (P < 0.001) and in-hospital stay (P < 0.001) study group had better outcome than opposite group. In a 30 (P < 0.001) and 90 (P < 0.001) days follow-up pulmonary perfusion was improved in patients who received enoxaparin versus heparin alone without increasing major bleeding complications. Conclusion Enoxaparin and weight-adjusted intravenous UH as adjunct to 1-h alteplase infusion improve in-hospital and follow-up outcome compared to heparin alone in high-risk PE.

1. Loss of plant species induced by adverse human influence and habitat fragmentation might be delayed due to a slow response to changed environmental conditions. This phenomenon is known as extinction debt, which can lead to the underestimation of actual threats to biodiversity. To adequately estimate the condition of recently fragmented plant communities and avoid future loss of species, good indicators of forthcoming extinctions are needed. 2. We studied the behaviour of genetic diversity of a relatively common habitat specialist grass Briza media in fragmented calcareous grasslands in which the extinction debt has been previously documented. Species richness in this system is shown to be determined by historical landscape patterns and human population densities prevailing centuries ago. We hypothesize that genetic diversity in this grassland system is related to current landscape patterns and contemporary human impact since genetic diversity might react more quickly to environmental changes than species diversity. 3. In contrast to species diversity, genetic diversity was indeed best described by current connectivity of grasslands. Additionally, genetic diversity was negatively related to current human population density, indicating an adverse effect of contemporary human settlements on studied species. The faster response of genetic diversity to changed environmental conditions compared to species richness was further supported by the absence of an expected correlation between species richness and genetic diversity. 4. Human population density a century ago had a positive effect on genetic diversity. A similar effect has been demonstrated for species richness in these grasslands, indicating that traditional land use in the past has supported the development of both genetic and species diversity. 5. Synthesis. Genetic diversity of Briza media in fragmented communities is reacting quickly to changes in landscape structure and anthropogenic pressure. Our results confirm that plant species can be prone to genetic deterioration due to habitat fragmentation and negative anthropogenic impact even if the decline in species richness has been delayed by extinction debt. Thus, a decrease of population genetic diversity in fragmented communities can be taken as the first indication of future species losses.

Rhinanthus osiliensis is a narrow endemic growing in calcareous spring fens on the island Saaremaa, Estonia. Plants very similar to R. osiliensis have been found in Sweden on the island of Gotland. Fifteen microsatellite markers were used to characterize genetic variation within R. osiliensis and the unknown taxon from Gotland. Results were compared with common Rhinanthus minor and Rhinanthus angstifolius. Our results showed that genetic diversity was remarkably lower in the Rhinanthus sp. from Gotland compared to Estonian endemic R. osiliensis. The microsatellite loci we used distinguished four studied species. In total, 46 species-specific alleles were found. The Neighbor-Joining dendrogram based on Nei's genetic distances, the Bayesian clustering analysis and the principle coordinate analysis showed that R. osiliensis and Rhinanthus sp. from Gotland are genetically differentiated and could not be the same species. In addition, endemic R. osiliensis was closer to widespread R. angustifolius. Further genetic comparison between unknown Rhinanthus sp. and local R. angustifolius and R. minor from Gotland is necessary for determine the species status and checking the possible alternative hypothesis about the origin of the unclear taxon.

Phytoplankton and its most common pigment chlorophyll a (Chl-a) are important parameters in characterizing lake ecosystems. We compared six methods to measure the concentration of Chl a (C Chl-a) in two optically different lakes: stratified clear-water Lake Saadjärv and non-stratified turbid Lake Võrtsjärv. C Chl-a was estimated from: in vitro (spectrophotometric, highperformance liquid chromatography); fluorescence (in situ automated highfrequency measurement (AHFM) buoys) and spectral (in situ high-frequency hyperspectral above-water radiometer (WISPStation), satellites Sentinel-3 OLCI and Sentinel-2 MSI) measurements. The agreement between methods ranged from weak (R 2 = 0.26) to strong (R 2 = 0.93). The consistency was better in turbid lake compared to the clear-water lake where the vertical and short-term temporal variability of the C Chl-a was larger. The agreement between the methods depends on multiple factors, e.g., the environmental and in-water conditions, placement of sensors, sensitivity of algorithms. Also in case of some methods, seasonal bias can be detected in both lakes due to signal strength and background turbidity. The inherent differences of the methods should be studied before the synergistic use of data which will clearly increase the spatial (via satellites), temporal (AHFM buoy, WISPStation and satellites) and vertical (profiling AHFM buoy) coverage of data necessary to advance the research on phytoplankton dynamics in lakes.

Global warming, paired with eutrophication processes, is shifting phytoplankton communities towards the dominance of bloom-forming and potentially toxic cyanobacteria. The ecosystems of shallow lakes are especially vulnerable to these changes. Traditional monitoring via microscopy is not able to quantify the dynamics of toxin-producing cyanobacteria on a proper spatio-temporal scale. Molecular tools are highly sensitive and can be useful as an early warning tool for lake managers. We quantified the potential microcystin (MC) producers in Lake Peipsi using microscopy and quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) and analysed the relationship between the abundance of the mcyE genes, MC concentration, MC variants and toxin quota per mcyE gene. We also linked environmental factors to the cyanobacteria community composition. In Lake Peipsi, we found rather moderate MC concentrations, but microcystins and microcystin-producing cyanobacteria were widespread across the lake. Nitrate (NO 3 −) was a main driver behind the cyanobacterial community at the beginning of the growing season, while in late summer it was primarily associated with the soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) concentration. A positive relationship was found between the MC quota per mcyE gene and water temperature. The most abundant variant-MC-RR-was associated with MC quota per mcyE gene, while other MC variants did not show any significant impact.

Autotrophic picoplankton was analyzed with CHEMTAX and flow cytometry. • The study covers area of the West-Estonian Archipelago Sea (Baltic Sea). • Picoplankton is a significant primary producer in eutrophic coastal areas. • Picoeukaryotes play an important role in the coastal areas. • The spatial variability of picoplankton can be considerable even in small regions.

We analysed long-term (1992-2020) changes in fertiliser use, wastewater treatment, and river water nutrient status in Estonia (N-E Europe) in the context of changing socioeconomic situations and legislation. We hypothesised that improved regulation of fertiliser usage and wastewater treatment are reflected as declining riverine nutrient concentrations, with the largest relative improvements occurring in catchments with initially high proportions of point source loading. We analysed nutrient dynamics in 16 rivers differing by catchment land use, population and livestock densities. Data on fertiliser use and wastewater treatment originated from the Statistics Estonia database, and riverine nutrient concentrations from the State Environmental Monitoring Database. We clustered the rivers by their catchment properties and analysed trends in their nutrient status. Point source nutrient loading reductions explained most of the decline in riverine nutrient concentrations, whereas application of mineral fertilisers has increased, hindering efforts to reach water quality and nutrient load targets set by the EU Water Framework Directive and the Baltic Sea Action Plan. Highest nitrogen concentrations and strongest increasing trends were found in rivers within the Nitrate Vulnerable Zone, indicating violation of the EU Nitrates Directive. To comply with these directives, resource managers must address non-point source nutrient loading from river watersheds.
