Remembrance: Purple Heart Recipients

Originally created as the "Badge of Military Merit" by General George Washington on August 7, 1782, the Purple Heart is the nation's oldest military decoration. Washington created the decoration to recognize "not only instances of unusual gallantry in battle, but also extraordinary fidelity and essential service in any way," during the American Revolution.

Today, the Purple Heart remains a respected military decoration given to servicemembers for wounds sustained during service. Read about its history and first recipients and visit memorial pages of the most awarded recipients.

Planning ahead for a Veteran's or loved one's final resting place can eliminate unnecessary delays and reduce stress on a family at a difficult time.

Apply online for pre-need eligibility determinations:

  • Veteran or servicemember
  • Spouse
  • Dependent family member

If your Veteran or loved one has already passed away, you do not need to apply for a pre-need determination. Call the National Cemetery Scheduling Office directly at 800-535-1117 (TTY: 711) to determine your loved one's eligibility for time-of-need requests.
