What does #sustainability look like at Athens this soccer season? We’re participating in fan events across Los Angeles, providing complimentary waste and recycling services, source-separated collection containers, and hands-on education to help fans properly sort recyclables, organics, and trash throughout the events. Our team is committed to providing the right tools and education to help fans sort materials before they ever enter the waste stream. Proper source separation plays an important role in recovering valuable materials, reducing contamination, and supporting California's SB 1383 goals to divert waste from landfills and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Through interactive activities and on-site engagement, our team is helping attendees understand what belongs in each container and why those choices matter. Effective waste diversion begins at the point of disposal, and small actions can have a meaningful impact when multiplied across large-scale community events. Come visit us at our final fan event this summer in West Harbor, July 18-19! #AthensServices #recycLA #SB1383

As Athens recognizes National Waste & Recycling Workers Appreciation Day, our drivers' stories offer a closer look at the people behind the work. Waste and recycling workers are often seen for only a few moments at a time, from the curb or on the road, however behind every route is a skilled workforce operating heavy equipment, managing real hazards, serving neighborhoods, and helping keep communities clean, safe, and moving. What happens to a textile once it enters the waste stream? That was one of the questions Jessica Aldridge, TRUE Advisor, Athens Director of Sustainability explored at the Los Angeles Textile Recovery Event, where she joined producers, waste haulers, government agencies, and sustainability professionals to discuss the future of textile management in Los Angeles County. Drawing from waste characterization studies and operational experience, Jessica shared insights into what happens when clothing, shoes, linens, and other fabrics are disposed of in the trash. While many of these materials may have reuse or recycling potential, that opportunity evaporates once they become mixed with municipal solid waste. The conversation highlighted an important principle of sustainable materials management: the best opportunity to recover valuable materials is before they enter the waste stream. Whether it's textiles, recyclables, or organic materials, source separation plays a critical role in preserving resources and supporting more effective recovery systems. Collaboration between manufacturers, local governments, community organizations, and waste and recycling providers will be essential as California continues exploring innovative ways to keep valuable materials in circulation and out of landfills. Athens was proud to participate in the conversation and support practical, forward-thinking solutions that support #ZeroWaste goals in Southern California. #AthensServices #TextileRecovery

This World Environment Day, we're reminded that sustainability is not defined by a single day of action. It is built through the daily decisions that help reduce waste and recover valuable resources. Every day, the work of protecting our environment starts with collection routes, recycling facilities, organics processing, and the people who keep those systems moving. When food scraps and other organics are disposed of in landfills, they break down and generate methane, a powerful greenhouse gas. By separating green waste and processing it into beneficial products like compost, we reduce emissions while creating valuable resources that support our communities. At the same time, recycling helps conserve natural resources, reduce the need for raw material extraction, and extend the life of materials that can be manufactured into new products. Together, recycling and organics recovery play an important role in advancing Athens' #ZeroWaste goals. The work we accomplish on World Environment Day–and every day–is thanks to our drivers, mechanics, facility operators, customer service teams, and partners across our organization. Our commitment to our customers helps transform environmental services into measurable action and supports cleaner, more sustainable communities across Southern California. #AthensServices #WorldEnvironmentDay #SB1383

This "Learn About #Compost Day," we’re spotlighting how your food scraps help feed the soil in our communities. Composting is one of the most effective ways to create a circular system by transforming #organic waste into a valuable resource. Through American Organics, Athens turns food scraps, food-soiled paper, and yard waste into nutrient-rich compost that we distribute through free community giveaway events to support homes, gardens, parks, landscaping, and community programs across Southern California. Every green bin collected helps divert waste from landfills and supports California’s SB 1383! Here’s two easy ways to help: • Use your green bin for food scraps and yard waste • Keep contamination OUT of green containers (no plastic or trash!) #AthensServices #SB1383

Athens Services partnered with Homeboy Threads to give old uniform polos and work pants a second life ♻️ Homeboy Threads works with businesses to ensure apparel and textiles are put to their best use—whether through reuse, resale, fiber-to-fiber recycling, or responsible disposal. The polos are being recycled since they’re no longer usable. However, the work pants are still in great condition and are being donated for Homeboy employees to use. 👕 Got clothing you no longer need? Give it a second life by donating or upcycling it! Athens Services proudly donated a 2013 Mack TerraPro collection vehicle, nicknamed “Big Mack,” and a Chevy Silverado to the Pomona Fairplex Career and Technical Education Center (CTEC). 🚚 🛻 Big Mack was just serving the city a month ago but after more than a decade of service, the truck has been retired and will now be utilized as a powerful learning tool for the next generation. Students will now gain hands-on experience with real equipment, from CNG engines and hydraulic systems to welding heavy-duty materials used in the field. This isn’t just a donation, it’s an investment in skills, careers, and futures. 🔧 We’re honored to partner with the Pomona Fairplex and the City of Pomona to help build pathways for future skilled workers.
