We envision a Los Angeles with every woman housed and on a path to personal stability. Our mission is to end homelessness for women in greater Los Angeles through housing, wellness, employment, and advocacy. Honored to have joined the Iris Cantor–UCLA Women’s Health Center Women’s Health & Economic Empowerment Conference to discuss a critical and often overlooked reality: the growing feminization of homelessness. Drawing on insights from the newly released Portrait of Los Angeles County by Measure of America and the Downtown Women's Center's LA County Women's Needs Assessment, we explored how economic inequality, housing instability, and systemic barriers are driving more women into homelessness. The data tell a clear story: • Women continue to earn less while carrying greater housing cost burdens • Structural inequities disproportionately impact women of color • More than 72,000 people are experiencing homelessness in Los Angeles County, with women among the fastest-growing—and often least visible—populations. • When 58% of residents are rent-burdened and it takes nearly 100 hours of minimum-wage work to afford a one-bedroom apartment, homelessness is not an individual failure—it is a predictable outcome of systemic exclusion. Addressing homelessness requires more than crisis response. It demands investments in housing, economic security, healthcare, and policies that recognize the unique challenges women face. Good solutions can be found in both reports! The new federal “Point-In-Time” report shows homelessness in California decreased by 2.8% last year, while homelessness nationwide dropped for the first time since 2016.
