  • Product recalls can challenge consumer confidence, but they also present an opportunity to strengthen product safety compliance programs and reinforce brand trust and loyalty. In a recent Inc. article covering the recall of Madewell sweaters due to potential flammability concerns, Exponent's Corporate Vice President and Principal Engineer Jason Hertzberg, Ph.D., P.E., a globally recognized leader in consumer product safety, shared his perspective on the role of effective recall management in protecting both consumers and brands. Dr. Hertzberg notes that while a recall can impact a company's reputation, an organization's response is critical. "In terms of impact on a company’s brand reputation, conducting a recall clearly can rattle consumer confidence… How a company responds to a product safety issue by incorporating lessons learned and improving its internal product safety compliance program can have a direct impact on how quickly it regains trust and mitigates future risk." At Exponent, we help organizations navigate complex product safety challenges, evaluate risk, and develop strategies that support compliance, consumer protection, and long-term brand resilience. Scientific rigor in developmental and reproductive toxicology depends not only on data but also on scientists willing to question assumptions, challenge weak interpretations, mentor the next generation — and warn against a lack of seriousness. At the Society for Birth Defects Research and Prevention 66th Annual Meeting, Exponent’s John DeSesso, Ph.D., Fellow ATS, presented “The Rise of Regulatogens: A Crisis of Insouciance and Dilettantism in the Regulatory DART World … And How We Must Fix It” as the Robert L. Brent Lecture. With an outré hat to illustrate the insouciance he decries, Dr. DeSesso examined how regulatory decisions in developmental and reproductive toxicology can drift from evidence when opinion, confirmation bias, or poorly supported interpretations overshadow validated data. Drawing on decades of experience in the field, Dr. DeSesso challenged the DART community to protect scientific rigor, ask hard questions, defend high-quality evidence, and communicate clearly with regulators and the public. • EV batteries can generate large volumes of operational and diagnostic data, but on-board battery management systems are typically designed for real-time control, protection, estimation, and diagnostics. This can limit their ability to run high-fidelity models or computationally intensive prognostics in real time. Battery digital twins can help address part of that gap by supporting the development, evaluation, and validation of diagnostic and prognostic methods before they are translated into reduced-order models or computationally efficient approaches. When supported by appropriate data quality, calibration, validation, and operational context, EV battery digital twins can help evaluate degradation trends, potential anomalies, and fleet-level reliability considerations. 🚗Learn more: https://hubs.li/Q04p5Zxf0 Melissa Trombley Mendias, PhD, PE, CFEI, CVFI, Dustin Burns, Ph.D., PStat®, Sergio Mendoza #Exponent #ThoughtLeadership #Scientific #DigitalTwin #BatterySystems #BatteryEngineering #EVsafety #Batteries #Transportation

  • 🎉 Please join us in welcoming Taylor Burkhalter to Exponent as a Business Development Manager in our Houston office. Mr. Burkhalter brings a uniquely well-rounded background spanning upstream oil and gas operations, forensic engineering, construction, and risk management — giving him the rare ability to speak credibly with clients navigating complex technical, regulatory, and liability challenges. His client-focused approach is grounded in practical insight and a deep understanding of the industries he serves. Prior to joining Exponent, Mr. Burkhalter worked at a nationally recognized forensic engineering firm, where he led business development, account management, and project oversight across a full cycle of energy-related investigations and litigation support matters. There, he built and managed client relationships across the upstream oil and gas, construction, and industrial sectors — connecting organizations with specialized technical expertise to resolve complex operational, safety, and liability challenges. His earlier experience in the insurance and risk management industry further sharpened his ability to identify and communicate risk across both technical and commercial environments. At Exponent, Mr. Burkhalter will focus on expanding client partnerships across the Houston market and beyond, identifying growth opportunities, and delivering the kind of strategic, solutions-oriented service our clients expect. We are excited to have Mr. Burkhalter on the team and look forward to seeing how his expertise and energy will make an impact. Please join us in giving him a warm welcome! 🚀 #Exponent #NewHire #BusinessDevelopment #SalesLeadership #ClientSuccess

  • California pesticide regulations continue to rapidly evolve, making strategic engagement with regulators more critical than ever. To facilitate meaningful dialogue between registrants and California pesticide registration leadership, Exponent’s Emily Saad, Ph.D., will lead and moderate the highly anticipated “Informational Session on DPR’s Active Ingredient Teams with the Team Supervisors and Networking Session with DPR’s Active Ingredient Teams,” at the Western Plant Health Regulatory Conference 2026, July 29 at 9 a.m.   This first-of-its-kind interactive session brings together DPR’s Active Ingredient Team supervisors for a candid, interactive discussion designed to help registrants better understand how DPR’s Active Ingredient Teams operate, DPR’s work assignment process, and strategies for more effectively engaging with the Pesticide Registration Branch. Dr. Saad will facilitate a dynamic Q&A informed by questions from Western Plant Health (WPH) members. Additionally, attendees can continue the conversation during a networking session with DPR’s Active Ingredient Team members. Reflecting Exponent's recognized leadership in California pesticide regulations and longstanding engagement with DPR, this session offers both new and experienced regulatory professionals direct access to pesticide registration management and staff, practical insights into California’s pesticide registration processes, and valuable opportunities to build connections with the staff and management at DPR who are critical to registration decisions.   Register: https://hubs.li/Q04pYtlY0   Connect with Dr. Saad: https://hubs.li/Q04pYqSs0   #Exponent #Event #RegulatoryAffairs #PesticideRegistration #CropProtection #Agriculture #WesternPlantHealth #Chemicals

Industry standard stress-corrosion cracking (SCC) testing may not tell the full story for newer-generation 7xxx-series aluminum alloys in aerospace applications. In an article in the journal Corrosion Science, Exponent’s Connor Slone, Ph.D., P.E., CWI, Meredith Sellers, Robert Caligiuri, and co-authors found that several newer-generation 7xxx-series aluminum alloys performed similarly to legacy materials in conventional ASTM G47 testing but showed significantly greater susceptibility to cracking in hot, humid-air environments. Read their article to discover what these findings suggest about a widely used standard test method and how different environments influence crack initiation and propagation in 7xxx-series aluminum alloys: https://hubs.li/Q04q0dD40 #Exponent #Publication #MaterialsScience #CorrosionTesting #ASTMG47 #Transportation
