The global standard for integrating impact throughout the investment lifecycle

About us

The Operating Principles for Impact Management (Impact Principles) provide a framework for investors to ensure that impact considerations are integrated throughout an investment lifecycle. Launched in 2019 with 58 original Signatories, the Impact Principles were crafted in collaboration with asset owners and asset managers from around the world and across the public and private sectors. They have become the global standard for robust and transparent impact management, and there are now 184 Signatories from 40 countries managing over $529 billion in alignment with the Impact Principles. Signatories to the Impact Principles commit to publishing an annual Disclosure Statement that describes how their impact management systems and processes align with each of the 9 Principles. They are also required to provide regular independent verification of this alignment. These documents are all accessible through our website, impactprinciples.org, in addition to each Signatory’s website. Impact investments are investments made with the intention to contribute to positive, measurable social and environmental impact alongside a financial return. The Impact Principles represent a collective commitment to bringing greater transparency, rigor, and discipline to the impact investing market, with the aim of increasing the global mobilization of capital for impact. Launched by IFC, the Impact Principles Secretariat is now hosted by the Global Impact Investing Network.

  • 📣 𝗖𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗡𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀: 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗕𝗼𝗮𝗿𝗱    We are now seeking Signatory nominations for the upcoming Impact Principles Advisory Board Election, taking place this September.    Made up of senior leaders from Signatory organizations, the Advisory Board advises the Secretariat on the strategy, implementation, and evolution of the Impact Principles and supports their promotion in the market. Members are elected by the Signatory community to serve four-year terms, with elections taking place every two years. The Global Impact Investing Network and IFC - International Finance Corporation, as the current and original host organizations, also sit on the Advisory Board.     Five seats will be up for election this year. We especially encourage nominations from Signatories that bring asset owner and allocator perspectives, support the global growth of the Impact Principles community, and/or offer strong impact practice leadership in the market.    Signatories interested in learning more about the Advisory Board or submitting a nomination are encouraged to contact us at secretariat@impactprinciples.org. Additional details were also shared in the July Signatory newsletter. For more information on the governance of the Impact Principles, including current Advisory Board members, visit our website: https://lnkd.in/ezWFADd8

  • 📣 Last week, the 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝟳𝘁𝗵 𝗔𝗻𝗻𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗠𝗲𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 brought together Signatories and guests for an evening of connection and conversation, hosted by Schroders during London Climate Week. Through a panel discussion and peer conversations, we dove deep into this year’s theme of 𝙄𝙢𝙥𝙖𝙘𝙩 𝙋𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙘𝙞𝙥𝙡𝙚𝙨 𝙞𝙣 𝙖 𝘾𝙝𝙖𝙣𝙜𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙒𝙤𝙧𝙡𝙙, examining how impact practice can scale and adapt to meet the moment amid policy and market uncertainties, diverging LP expectations, and pressure to mobilize capital in a complex environment. We were also excited to share Secretariat updates on our strategic priorities, the 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗣𝗶𝗹𝗼𝘁 𝗜𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲, our upcoming Advisory Board election, and new measures to support smaller asset managers. A few key takeaways: 💡 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀: In a fragmented and complex global landscape, the Impact Principles – as a principles-based, universally applicable voluntary standard – provide a shared foundation for clarity and consistency in impact management practice across regions, asset classes and strategies. They help investors signal credibility while functioning as a practical management tool to drive better decisions and outcomes.   💡 𝗟𝗣 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗶𝗻 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗽𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲: Asset owners and allocators can drive stronger impact management practice by setting clear expectations and engaging GP as partners beyond capital allocation. Through the Impact Principles Supporter Pilot, we're learning how LPs can use their influence deliberately to strengthen IMM across the investment lifecycle and in the broader ecosystem. 💡 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆: As climate investing and other thematic-focused strategies scale, it is important to ensure that the increased capital flows are matched by real impact. The Impact Principles are well positioned as a practical framework that travels across strategies to help anchor in impact intentionality and discipline. A big thank you to this year’s speakers for their valuable contributions: Host Welcome: Maria Teresa Zappia, BlueOrchard Finance Ltd / Schroders  Opening Remarks: Danielle Brassel, Zurich Insurance (Advisory Board Convenor)  Secretariat Update: Joohee Rand, Impact Principles / The Global Impact Investing Network  Panel Discussion: Shami Nissan, Actis (Moderator); Luyen Tran, IFC - International Finance Corporation; Alexandra (Sasha) Zoueva, The Rockefeller Foundation; Nadina Stodiek, Schroders; Raphaël Reynaudi, Amethis  Closing Remarks: Sean Gilbert, The Global Impact Investing Network Thank you as well to the Schroders team for generously hosting us, and to all the Signatories and guests who joined, connected, and shared their perspectives. We look forward to continuing this work together.

Over the past months, I’ve had the privilege of helping organize and participate in three convenings with deep impact measurement and management (IMM) discussions: the Joint IMM Convening for Advanced Practitioners, Mission Investors Exchange, and The Global Impact Investing Network Investor Council Annual Meeting. Different audiences, different angles – but a remarkably consistent throughline emerged about where the field is on IMM, what needs to change, and what remains unresolved.   Sharing some reflections:    📈 SCALING WITH INTEGRITY. As pressure grows to mobilize capital at scale in an uncertain market, growth must be anchored in credible, quality impact practices. IMM rigor is needed to translate capital growth into real outcomes. But for that to happen, IMM must be embraced and function as a practical decision-making tool instead of a compliance burden. 🛠️ FIT-FOR-PURPOSE IMM. Across convenings, the same warning surfaced: that data is not being used to make decisions. Has the field overweighted impact measurement at the expense of management? Fit-for-purpose IMM is forward-looking, iterative, and decision-oriented, shaping strategy and improving outcomes. It’s also scalable and efficient – because unless it’s commercially practical, it will not be embraced by the broader market.  🧩 CONVERGENCE WITH FLEXIBILITY. We need shared foundations of core metrics, common frameworks, and standard practices to enable comparability and efficiency, but with flexibility for different strategies and contexts. Convergence can lower barriers and reduce friction across the market, enabling scale without enforcing a single approach.  📏RIGHT-SIZING AND RESOURCING IMM. The field still lacks clarity on what good (enough) IMM looks like across strategies, asset classes, maturity levels and geographies, as well as what it costs, and who should pay for it. Without this clarity, inconsistent market expectations are used to justify underinvestment or dismissal that can drive impact washing. Capacity building for both managers and allocators is critical, along with field-level knowledge development.  🏛️ LP LEADERSHIP IN IMM.  Asset owners/LPs have a structural role they’re not yet fully leveraging. Asset managers/GPs can't invest meaningfully and sustainably in IMM unless LPs value it in ways that influence decisions. Today's fragmented LP expectations and misaligned incentives are driving confusion, underinvestment, inefficiency and compliance-driven GP behaviors. Clearer, more aligned LP signals and incentives are critical to strengthen IMM practices at scale.     Thank you to the teams at @Impact Frontiers, GIIN/IRIS+ and Impact Principles, and Mission Investors Exchange, and to everyone who showed up with candor, curiosity and intension across these three convenings. The conversations were meaningful, and I look forward to our work together ahead. It was also just wonderful connecting with so many friends and colleagues in the field.   🙏 ❤️ 🙌

Principle 4 calls on investors to systematically assess – and quantify when possible – the impact they expect their investments to achieve. Before committing capital, investors are encouraged to examine the intended impact, who will experience it, how significant it is, and how likely it is to occur, while considering risks to impact, indirect and systemic impacts, and opportunities to increase impact post-investment. 📊 Signatories are increasingly institutionalizing these assessments. This includes using consistent impact scoring or rating approaches across their portfolios, aligning their metrics with IRIS+, applying the Five Dimensions of Impact, and establishing impact baselines and targets to ground future monitoring and management. 💡 As part of our Common & Emerging Practices series, Signatory Spotlights showcase real-world examples of how Signatories implement the Impact Principles. The Principle 4 report features bite-sized case studies on ex-ante assessment approaches across different types of investors, asset classes, and geographies, including Actis, BlueOrchard Finance Ltd, elea Foundation, INOKS Capital S.A., Lightrock, Mediterrania Capital Partners, The Scottish National Investment Bank, The Rise Fund, and Zurich Insurance. We were thrilled to partner with The Global Impact Investing Network and Impact Frontiers on last month’s #IMMConvening2026 in Montreal. This was a uniquely participant-driven event, bringing together advanced IMM practitioners for in-depth discussions on some of the most central topics in IMM, from improving methods for outcome measurement to balancing the drive for standardization with the need to tailor impact approaches to specific investment contexts. We were particularly inspired by the openness of participants – including many Impact Principles Signatories – to candidly share their practices and challenges to advance best practices across the field. Thank you to all participants and partners for your thoughtful exchange and contributions.

The GIIN, IRIS+ and the Impact Principles were pleased to partner with Impact Frontiers to co-convene the #IMMConvening2026 for advanced practitioners in Montreal last month, hosted by Fondaction and Fondaction Asset Management. Designed as a participant-driven experience rather than a traditional conference, the convening brought together experienced practitioners to engage deeply on the practical realities of impact measurement and management (IMM). Key themes emerged: 🔹IMM as a strategic and resource question: Building robust IMM systems requires navigating trade-offs across capacity, cost and priorities. Participants explored how to maintain rigor and impact credibility while ensuring relevance for investment decision-making. 🔹Transparency as a foundation for effective practice: Clarity around assumptions, methodologies and the intended use of data is essential to ensure impact data is credible, interpretable and useful for stakeholders. 🔹Balancing consistency with context: Standardization supports comparability, while flexibility is needed to reflect diverse investment strategies and operating environments. Many practitioners are already applying this balance in ways that support both portfolio-level insight and practical solutions for the broader ecosystem. The discussion reflects a shared commitment to strengthening IMM as a core component of effective impact investing practice. Thank you to the practitioners who contributed their expertise and engaged candidly throughout. We are also grateful to the organizations whose support made this convening possible, including Soros Economic Development Fund, Cambridge Associates, Blue Haven Initiative, Builders Vision, The Rockefeller Foundation, MacArthur Foundation, Calvert Impact, KKR and FinDev Canada. #ImpactInvesting #IMM #Finance

  • 📑 Check out 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝟰 – 𝗘𝘅-𝗔𝗻𝘁𝗲 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗔𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁, the latest resource in our 𝘊𝘰𝘮𝘮𝘰𝘯 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘌𝘮𝘦𝘳𝘨𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘗𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘦𝘴 𝘚𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘴. https://lnkd.in/exRkw5hD 🔍 Principle 4 calls on investors to assess each investment’s expected impact before capital is committed, quantifying it where possible. This includes systematically examining the intended impact, who experiences it, how significant it is, and how likely it is to occur given the risks to impact and relevant context. The principle also encourages investors to use a suitable results framework, align indicators to industry standards, and consider opportunities to increase impact as well as indirect and systemic impacts. Principle 4 strengthens investment decision‑making and creates a stronger foundation for subsequent monitoring, learning, and course correction. 💡 Our latest report reveals how Signatories are increasingly institutionalizing their approaches to impact assessment, including by: • Using consistent impact frameworks – such as scoring and rating approaches – in line with their theories of change • Identifying impact metrics or KPIs and quantifying impact potential with baselines and expected trajectories. • Aligning indicators to IRIS+ and applying the Five Dimensions of Impact, while balancing standardization with flexibility to meet their unique investment contexts Nevertheless, challenges remain in assessing impact, including distinguishing outcomes from outputs, setting realistic impact targets with limited baseline and benchmark data, evaluating impact risks and likelihood, and considering indirect or systemic effects, which highlight potential areas for further development by the field. The report features real-world Signatory Practice Spotlights showcasing approaches to impact assessment across different types of investors, asset classes and geographies – including Actis, BlueOrchard Finance Ltd, elea, INOKS Capital S.A., Lightrock, Mediterrania Capital Partners, The Scottish National Investment Bank, The Rise Fund, and Zurich Insurance.
