Today, Mayor Mamdani unveiled N.Y.C. Groceries: A Recipe for Affordability, a first-of-its-kind vision to expand access to affordable groceries while strengthening neighborhoods across New York City. NYCEDC also issued a request for proposals (RFP) from qualified grocers or firms to serve as operators of one or more N.Y.C. Groceries stores. Respondents to the RFP are expected to be operators who can demonstrate experience with grocery store operations and adherence to strong labor practices. Today, Mayor Mamdani appointed Anthony Shorris as the next President & CEO of the New York City Economic Development Corporation. Tony is a government veteran bringing over 40 years of experience in the public and private sectors. Before joining McKinsey & Company, Tony served as First Deputy Mayor of New York City and led the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. Mayor Mamdani also appointed Lina Khan as the next Chair of the EDC Board of Directors. Lina served as Chair of the Federal Trade Commission from 2021 to 2025 and is currently an Associate Professor at Columbia Law School, where she leads the newly formed Center for Law and the Economy. We want to thank Margaret Anadu for her years of dedicated service and leadership as Board Chair, helping guide NYCEDC’s mission forward. Today, NYCEDC issued an RFP for qualified respondents to provide hands-on life sciences learning and career programming to public school K-8th grade students within Kips Bay. Selected partners will implement innovative education programs focused on skill-building and career awareness, connecting New Yorkers to the growing range of STEM opportunities in the area. This work will strengthen the workforce pipeline needed for long-term industry growth and builds on the City’s SPARC Kips Bay initiative—a first-of-its-kind hub for education, workforce development, and industry. Funding of up to $500,000 will be provided, in aggregate, over five years to support one or more selected operators. Submissions are due no later than August 31, 2026. Today we announced the release of a Request for Proposals (RFP) for the disposition and development of a mixed-use residential building on land owned by the City of New York known as “B-East” located on Second Avenue between East 125th and East 126th Street. The currently vacant site presents a significant opportunity to deliver mixed-income housing, neighborhood-serving retail, and other community uses for East Harlem. The B-East site is an integral part of the East 125th Street Development project approved in 2008 and it is estimated that this redeveloped site can deliver 140 housing units. The redevelopment of B-East will deliver on Mayor Mamdani’s Land Inventory Fast Track (LIFT), which aims to speed the delivery of affordable housing on City-owned land and builds on the Block by Block: The Housing Plan for a New Era, a sweeping blueprint to tackle New York City’s deepening housing crisis with the urgency and scale the moment demands. Last night, NYCEDC joined Commercial Observer at MADE Bush Terminal to showcase how the campus is supporting the next generation of manufacturers, designers, makers, and entrepreneurs while strengthening Brooklyn’s working waterfront. Home to a diverse community of innovative businesses, MADE Bush Terminal continues to demonstrate how modern industrial spaces can help companies grow, create jobs, and shape New York City's economy. The evening featured a conversation moderated by Waverly Neer, NYCEDC’s Vice President of Asset Management, where attendees heard directly from tenants Stickbulb and PELLE about how MADE Bush Terminal supports their work and the future of manufacturing and design in New York City.

NYU Tandon School of Engineering opened applications today for the second cohort of the NYC Game Design Future Lab (GDFL), the Brooklyn-based incubator for New York City's digital games industry. Built in partnership with and sponsored by the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC), the incubator adds to the city's growing digital game design and development ecosystem, an industry that today counts roughly 380 studios, 7,900 jobs, and $2.6 billion in annual economic impact citywide. "Our first cohort showed us the range of what's possible in New York's game industry, from a worker-owned studio building its own arcade cabinet to a powerful end-user creation tool for XR content ready for phones and smartglasses," said Mitu Khandaker, Associate Director of the GDFL, who is also an Associate Professor at NYU Game Center. "For our second cohort, we're casting a wider net across that same ecosystem. We're inviting established game studios ready for their next stage of growth, and the platforms and creative technology companies building the tools and infrastructure the broader industry runs on. The event brought together leaders to discuss practical strategies for reducing building emissions, accelerating investment into retrofits and sustainable new construction, and advancing innovative building solutions that support economic growth and create good paying jobs for New Yorkers.
