With 12,000 species spread around the world’s oceans, there’s a lot of untapped biomass with potential for harvesting. While the seaweed industry dates back hundreds of years it is entering a new era with the increased diversification of products and businesses. Seaweed components are already used in some toothpastes, cosmetics, paints and industrial products such as adhesives and dyes, but there is growing demand across pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals, food ingredients, biotech applications and biodegradable materials. 💡 The SOUL project aims to develop a set of 11 Bio-Based and Biodegradable-in-soil Product Solutions (BPSs) for agriculture, gardening, landscaping, fisheries, leisure, and sport. The 11 BPSs have unique characteristics. SOUL aims to develop an ultrathin, transparent mulch film made from over 95% renewable materials, designed to enhance and protect corn in the first stages of growth. At the end of the crop cycle, the film can be left in the soil where it will fully biodegrade. 📢 I am pleased to share that our review paper entitled: 📄 "Alfalfa as a Biological Nitrogen Source and Biofertilizer Component in Sustainable Horticultural Production Systems" has been published in Horticulturae (Impact Factor: 3.4), a leading international journal (M21 category) published by MDPI, Basel, Switzerland. This review highlights the multifunctional role of alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) as much more than a forage crop. It demonstrates how alfalfa can serve as a biological nitrogen source, biofertilizer component, and organic soil enhancer, contributing to improved soil fertility, enhanced microbial activity, carbon sequestration, and reduced dependence on synthetic fertilizers. The paper also discusses the growing importance of alfalfa in sustainable horticultural production through its use as green manure, compost, pellets, and other organic amendments, while emphasizing its contribution to climate-smart and regenerative agriculture. This publication represents another valuable contribution from our research team to the field of sustainable horticulture and organic fertilization. I'm pleased to share our latest publication: "How to Close Nutrient Cycles in Agriculture? Emission Reduction Potential of Different Technologies on an EU Scale", published in Mitigation and Adaptation Strategies for Global Change https://lnkd.in/edTeG834. In this study, my co-authors Davit Stepanyan, Dr., Lena Behrendt, Alexander Gocht, Peter Witzke, Jan Peter Lesschen, Franz Weiss, Bernhard Osterburg and I evaluated seven innovative mitigation technologies across the EU to assess their potential to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and improve nutrient use efficiency. Using the CAPRI and MITERRA-Europe models, we simulated the stepwise adoption of these technologies against a 2030 baseline, providing one of the first EU-wide assessments of their environmental impacts. Some key findings: ✅ Pocket digesters for cattle and pig manure show the highest mitigation potential, reducing EU agricultural GHG emissions by up to 18.8 million tonnes CO₂-eq. (4.8%), with particularly large benefits in livestock-intensive regions. ✅ N-Sensor technology has the strongest impact on nutrient management, reducing mineral fertilizer use by up to 3% and nitrogen surplus by up to 2.6% across the EU. ✅ NIR-Sensor technology delivers the greatest improvements in manure application efficiency, reducing nitrogen leaching by up to 5.2% while also lowering GHG emissions. Our findings show that innovative agricultural technologies, supported by appropriate policy frameworks, can play an important role in reducing agricultural emissions and closing nutrient cycles across Europe. Can circular biofertilisers move from promising concept to mainstream agricultural input? That's the ambition behind BIO², a new €6.4 million Horizon Europe project bringing together research and industry partners to develop scalable biofertilisers and microbial solutions from renewable and circular sources. AgNavigator looks at why Rovensa Next's involvement is significant for the future of biologicals and circular agriculture. The project aims to convert underutilised resourcesincluding marine byproducts, recycled nutrients and beneficial microorganisms, into practical agricultural products, with at least two fully circular biofertilisers targeted by 2029. Key takeaways: ✅ Rovensa Next will help move innovations from the laboratory to commercial agriculture through formulation, screening and field validation ✅ Farmer networks across Europe will test solutions under real-world conditions on crops including wheat, potatoes, strawberries and table grapes ✅ The initiative reflects growing confidence in biofertilisers and microbial solutions as part of integrated farming systems ✅ The project aims to reduce reliance on conventional inputs such as nitrogen and phosphorus while supporting soil health and resource efficiency ✅ Success will depend on combining biologicals with precision agriculture, data-driven agronomy and improved crop genetics The project comes as biologicals continue their transition from niche products to an increasingly important pillar of sustainable crop production. From Waste to Value: Exploring the Potential of Black Soldier Fly (BSF) Larvae One of the most rewarding parts of research is stepping outside the laboratory and seeing innovation in action. Recently, our team visited a Black Soldier Fly (BSF) production facility to better understand how these remarkable insects are transforming organic kitchen waste into valuable resources. BSF larvae are not only highly efficient bioconverters that reduce food waste, but they also produce high-protein biomass for animal feed while serving as a promising source of chitin and chitosan—biopolymers with wide-ranging applications in agriculture, medicine, food technology, and sustainable materials. However, every production system comes with its own challenges. During our visit, we observed indications of a parasitoid infestation affecting BSF larvae. If confirmed, this could represent one of the earliest documented cases associated with BSF cultivation in Indonesia. Understanding the biology, ecology, and impact of these parasitoids is essential, as they may significantly influence larval productivity and the long-term sustainability of BSF farming. As researchers, our work does not stop at identifying problems—we aim to understand the underlying mechanisms and develop science-based solutions. We are currently investigating this phenomenon further to determine its identity, life cycle, and potential management strategies. Sustainable agriculture and circular bioeconomy are built not only on innovation but also on curiosity, collaboration, and continuous research. Every challenge we uncover is another opportunity to generate knowledge that can strengthen emerging industries and support a more resilient food system.
