    ♻️ 𝗖𝗶𝗿𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹. For years we’ve told brands to 𝘥𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘨𝘯 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘳𝘦𝘤𝘺𝘤𝘭𝘢𝘣𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘺. Now, it’s about to cost them if they don’t. 💰 From now, UK producers will start paying 𝗺𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗽𝗘𝗣𝗥 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝘀 (higher for “red” non-recyclable formats, lower for “green” ones). In France, Citeo’𝘀 𝗲𝗰𝗼-𝗺𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 already hits PVC and carbon-black plastics with up to a 𝟭𝟬% 𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘁𝘆, while rewarding recycled content and reuse. And the 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗣𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗧𝗮𝘅 (£223.69 / tonne for packs with <30% recycled content) has pushed recycled-resin demand up 𝟳% 𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟮. Design choices are starting to carry real costs. Circular design is finally being rewarded. ⚙️ But let’s be honest, design rules only work if the system can keep up. Around ~𝟴𝟬% 𝗼𝗳 𝗨𝗞 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗹𝘀 still don’t collect films weekly. FlexCollect trials show 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝟰𝟬% 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝟴𝟱%, though capture rates remain lower as households adapt and infrastructure scales. Without matching collection and processing capacity, design progress risks outpacing the system. 🔍 And yet, small design tweaks make huge differences: 🟢 Switching to mono-PE film can boost recyclate yield by ~𝟮𝟱% ⚫ Removing carbon-black makes plastics visible to NIR sorters >𝟵𝟬% 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 🔵 Ditching full-body shrink sleeves can reduce PET sorting errors 𝗯𝘆 𝟲𝟬% Circular design isn’t about revolution — it’s about engineering out the barriers one label, pigment and adhesive at a time. 🌍 Ultimately, circular design is 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻. Nearly 𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗳 𝗼𝗳 𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴’𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗼𝘁𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗻𝘁 comes from making virgin materials. Get design right at the start and you cut emissions before recycling even begins. Across Europe, better packaging design could cut 𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴-𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗚𝗛𝗚 𝗲𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗯𝘆 (𝟮𝟱–𝟯𝟬%) 𝗯𝘆 𝟮𝟬𝟯𝟬. 💬 The question is no longer 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 we design for circularity, 𝘪𝘵’𝘴 𝘩𝘰𝘸 𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘸𝘦 𝘢𝘧𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘥 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘵𝘰?     Recycling without chemistry-by-design isn’t circular. It’s guesswork. Recycling won’t save us if we can’t see what’s inside the polymers we’re circulating. Last week I shared research showing recycled plastic pellets can leach complex mixtures of chemicals that disrupt biology. Some pushed back: zebrafish are sensitive, the methods are imperfect, and the samples weren’t from the EU. These are fair points that are worth to examine. But they don’t touch the core issue I’m raising: At the chemical level, today’s common recycling processes cannot guarantee safety because we don’t know—let alone control—the full additive and contaminant profile of what we’re melting and remolding. This is not an India/Nigeria/Taiwan vs. EU debate. It’s a design and disclosure problem. I was fortunate to work with Michael Braungart, whose Cradle to Cradle work with William McDonough, made me pivot my career and sharpened my thinking: circularity is a chemistry problem before it’s a waste problem. If we don’t know what’s in the material, “recycling” becomes guesswork. EU frameworks help, but even in Europe: 🔹 Multi-source feedstocks + legacy additives + unreported contaminants = black-box inputs. 🔹 Mechanical recycling does not remove most additives; it redistributes them. 🔹 So let’s be precise about what “good recycling” requires if we care about human health and true circularity: 1️⃣ Fewer polymers, simpler recipes. Reduce the palette to known & safe ingredients. 2️⃣ Full chemical transparency. Mandatory disclosure and digital product passports so recycled feedstock isn’t guesswork. 3️⃣ Design for safe cycles. So materials remain nutrients, not liabilities. 4️⃣ Remove endocrine disruptors, persistent/bioaccumulative/toxic additives, and legacy contaminants from circulation. 5️⃣ Absolute reduction targets. Use less plastic overall—then recycle what’s designed to be safely recycled. Recycling should be the consequence (and last resort) of good chemistry, not the cover for unknown chemistry. If your plastics strategy is “more recycling” without chemistry-by-design, transparency, and reduction, you’re optimizing the wrong variable. Let’s build coalitions that make circular chemistry the default—so we can keep value in play without poisoning the loop.

    𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐄𝐔 𝐏𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐚𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐡𝐚𝐤𝐞-𝐔𝐩: 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐀𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐍𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐊𝐧𝐨𝐰🧑⚖    ❎ The Big Deadlines 🔹By 2030: All packaging placed on the EU market shall be designed for recycling (Design for Recycling criteria to be adopted for each packaging category by end of 2027) and categorized according to recyclability performance grades A, B and C. 🔹By 2035: Recycled-at-scale requirements take effect; focusing on separate collection, sorting into specific waste streams and leading to recycling at scale for defined waste streams. That means packaging must be recyclable at scale across the EU, not just in theory. 🔹By 2038: Only recyclability performance grades A and B will be allowed. ❎ Minimum Recycled Content Targets in Plastics: 🔹By 2030: 30% for PET bottles and contact sensitive packaging from PET, 10% for contact-sensitive packaging other than PET, and 35% for other plastic packaging.  🔹By 2040: Targets will be increased, eg. to 50% recycled content in contact sensitive packaging from PET. ❎ Reusable Packaging Targets: 🔹Not only for beverage distribution but also for transport packaging, which will have big impact on all stages of the value chain.          ❎ Restrictions (“bans”) from 2030: 🔹Think mini hotel toiletries, very lightweight plastic bags, single-portion condiment packs for on-site consumption. ❎ Harmonised Labelling: 🔹One EU-wide disposal label on packaging + matching bin labels from 2028 (reuse labels from 2029).      And here’s the kicker for food producers... For the first time, the compliance burden doesn’t sit with packaging suppliers - it sits with you (the brand owner/manufacturer/importer who places packaging on the market).  That means:  ✅ YOU must prove your packaging meet PPWR requirements.   ✅ YOU will need supplier data, to assess recyclability performance grades for YOUR packaging unit, and to declare achievement of recycled content targets.   ✅ Technical documentation and EU declarations of conformity are mandatory for YOU.      What this means for business?   ✨ You can’t “design pretty” first and think about recycling later.   ✨ “Recycle-ready” isn’t enough if the infrastructure doesn’t actually exist.   ✨ And for beverage and transport packaging? Reuse targets are no longer optional.  ✨ Single-use portion formats in HORECA and accommodation sector, and other formats, will get restricted.  ✨ Marketing claims must match law, not vibe.      This is the biggest packaging shake-up in decades.   If your packaging strategy isn’t already aligned with PPWR… you’re not behind schedule.     All you need to know about the EU packaging rules. (Most businesses aren’t ready for what’s coming.) Yesterday, I sat with a client inside the Impact Accelerator. An expert in packaging waste and his insights on the new regulations were invaluable. The European Union's Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) entered into force on 11 February 2025 and introduces comprehensive measures to enhance packaging sustainability across the EU. Key takeaways include: Recyclability Requirements ↳ By 2030, all packaging must be recyclable. ↳ Packaging with <70% recyclability won’t count as recyclable. Recycled Content Targets ↳ Plastic bottles: 30% recycled content by 2030, 65% by 2040. Packaging Minimization ↳ Packaging must be as light as possible. ↳ Max 50% empty space for e-commerce and transport packaging. Reuse and Refill Targets ↳ 10% of beverage containers to be reusable by 2030. ↳ Target rises to 40% by 2040. Bans on Certain Single-Use Packaging ↳ No plastic packaging for fresh produce under 1.5 kg. ↳ No single-use packaging for dine-in restaurants. Restrictions on Hazardous Substances ↳ PFAS and other harmful substances face new limits. Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) ↳ Companies must cover collection and recycling costs. Deposit Return Systems (DRS) ↳ 90% separate collection target for plastic bottles by 2029. Labelling and Information Requirements ↳ Standardised labels must show recyclability and disposal info. Implementation Timeline ↳ PPWR is in force and businesses got 18 months to comply. The rules are tightening. Compliance isn’t optional, it’s a business necessity.
