Because of the people behind them and what they are actually building. Allen Control Systems I listen to Steve Simoni's podcast, The Drone Ultimatum, on the way into work every single morning. The way he talks about this problem, killing drones with bullets guided by AI for $10 a kill, makes you wonder why nobody solved this sooner. Brilliant mind. Worth following. XDOWN I do not think people understand how significant this is. A drone you throw like a football. Airborne in two seconds. Twelve units in a backpack. The simplicity is the point. The best weapons are the ones that actually get used. Aventra Defense Systems This one hits different. The founders spent a year on the front lines in Ukraine with operators before building this. That is not a lab origin story. That is a war origin story. Taking an unguided munition and turning it into a GPS-independent precision weapon. Incredibly proud to work with this team. Vector Just crushing it. $61M raised. SOCOM contract. Fiber-optic guided drones that cannot be jammed. The team knows exactly what they are doing and the results speak for themselves. Scout AI The coolest application of AI in defense I have seen. Not building drones. Building the brain that controls autonomous missions at scale. The implications of that are enormous and most people have not caught up yet. Dracoe NDAA compliant drone manufacturing in North Carolina. No foreign components. No supply chain risk.     Southern California is the launch pad for the defense tech boom 🚀 I spoke with Wendy Lee of the Los Angeles Times about the latest venture capital trends in LA. The biggest takeaway: the defense tech revolution is booming in SoCal. Venture capital investments in greater L.A. more than doubled quarter-over-quarter to $5.8 billion in Q2’25 alone, with defense tech companies capturing the majority of that funding. Global defense tech funding hit $11.1 billion in just the first half of 2025, already surpassing all of 2024's $8.2 billion total. Leading the way is Anduril, the poster child for defense tech success. The company recently raised $2.5 billion at a staggering $30.5 billion valuation. They doubled revenue to $1 billion in 2024 and landed major contracts like a $99.6 million U.S. Army command-and-control prototype. But Anduril isn't alone. Shield AI commands a $5.3 billion valuation with $267 million in FY 2024 revenue, while Epirus reached unicorn status at $1 billion after raising $250 million in March 2025. SoCal has been America's defense and aerospace heartland since World War II, with giants like NASA JPL, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, and Boeing providing decades of expertise and infrastructure. World-class engineering universities like Caltech and USC Viterbi School of Engineering create a constant pipeline of top-tier talent. Combined with generations of specialized aerospace expertise, the region offers engineers who understand both cutting-edge technology and the unique demands of defense applications. Proximity to critical military testing facilities like Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake and easy access to the Central Valley for drone testing. Companies get manufacturing infrastructure and supply chain access at costs well below Silicon Valley – without sacrificing talent or expertise. Perhaps most importantly, the greater L.A. area has cultivated a unique culture that embraces "hard tech" manufacturing over software. This represents a fundamental ideological shift from Silicon Valley's consumer tech focus, attracting entrepreneurs genuinely committed to national security missions rather than the next social media app. The convergence of historical aerospace expertise, strong universities, substantial investment capital, proven role models like Anduril, and a culture embracing defense innovation has created a self-reinforcing ecosystem.     India’s Deftech Raik is building indigenously-developed load assistance exoskeletons for Indian soldiers. On the surface it’s a line about technology. Underneath it is a story about how India’s innovation landscape is changing, not just in labs, but where real physical challenges meet engineering. Raik Deftech Pvt Ltd, a young defence startup based in Sonipat, Haryana, is developing load-assistance exoskeletons designed to reduce fatigue and enhance mobility and endurance for soldiers carrying heavy gear. In conflict zones, long marches with heavy loads are not an abstract problem. They are a daily grind that wears down an army’s effectiveness. The exosuit is passive, not powered. It doesn’t rely on motors, batteries, or AI. That means no overheating, no charging constraints, and no dependency on electronics in extreme conditions. At around 11.1 kilograms, the exosuit is engineered to support external loads exceeding 80 kilograms, using a mechanical load-transfer mechanism known as the Delta Spring System, This doesn’t diminish the legacy of decades-old defence research institutions, but it does show how new builders are complementing tradition with agility and problem-first thinking. And yes, for a generation often critiqued for preferring convenience-led tech or lifestyle innovation, it’s worth acknowledging that many young innovators are choosing to apply their skills to nation-critical challenges, building the future of Indian defence capability from the ground up. This is innovation with purpose, not just polish.

    Don't invest in defense tech. Invest in 'dual use' tech: defense and commercial. Technology that is just as usable in wartime as peacetime. Have seen a great example of this recently. In the last 5 days, there's been two headlines for our EU portfolio company ICEYE. First: Cooperating with NATO HQ to provide near-real time imaging across the continent from its 48 in-orbit satellites. Second: Launched the industry's first hurricane data platform for the USA, giving insurers information from both wind and flooding within 24 hours of a hurricane making landfall. (Hat tip to the Helsinki bureau chief at Thomson Reuters, Anne Kauranen, and sister publication The Insurer, Scott Vincent, for covering.) We backed ICEYE (now also ICEYE US) in 2017 - and I remember getting questions from other US VCs/investors about why we were funding a Finnish microsatellite company. (European family offices, having seen already the Crimea annexation a few years prior, got it immediately). But even then, Rafal Modrzewski and Pekka Laurila were crystal clear about their vision: The persistent, precise monitoring of Earth, tracking changes down to the millimeter. Yes, geopolitical conflict creates demand; which drives rapid invention. But there's a thin line between 'making the most' of a situation, and war profiteering. It is in no one's best interest to back a startup that is solely incentivized for war and conflict to continue.     Maggie G. at Shield Capital and Gleb Shevchuk at drone startup Neros Technologies, provide an eye-opening and informative case study of what it takes to build hardware for DoD. Neros is one of the platforms on the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU)'s Blue UAS list, a vetted list of commercial drone platforms that meet the DoD's cybersecurity, supply chain, and operational standards. Basically, compliance with NDAA standards required Neros to design nearly all its own components. "During the first month or so of Neros, like a lot of others in the FPV drone world, started by using off-the-shelf components, many of which were built around cheap, widely available Chinese electronics. But it quickly became obvious that if we wanted to meet the NDAA's compliance standards, we'd have to rip most of those Chinese made components out and start from scratch." Actually, being on the Blue UAS List still doesn't mean that nothing comes from China, because some components are impossible to source outside China. This includes motors, cameras, as well as carbon fiber frames. Another challenge is hardening & testing. "Hardware systems need to reliably work even after being dropped out of an airplane, deployed in the middle of a rainstorm or sandstorm, or jammed with enemy electronic warfare devices, and that takes a lot of testing." Also, "MIL-SPEC standards were developed for large, multi billion-dollar weapon systems that are too important and expensive to lose. FPV drones, in contrast, cost less than $5000 and don't need to last 10 years. They don't even need to survive their mission. That shift in mindset hasn't caught up across the board, and it's part of the reason why DoD procurement is still slow and expensive." It's easy to underestimate these very real obstacles. In addition to those above, the article details further challenges of Electronic Warfare Hardening and Integration & Modularity.   • For decades, defense wasn’t a priority for much of Europe. Low military spending. Fragmented procurement. An overreliance on the U.S. and NATO. But that’s changing fast. €1.7B has been invested in defence tech startups in Europe since early 2024. The majority of it went into autonomous drones, electronic warfare software, underwater robotics, and AI decision systems. Because in today’s world, war isn’t just fought with firepower. It’s fought with compute. Algorithms. And edge intelligence. The U.S. has shown how defense primes like L3Harris are partnering with AI-native startups like Shield AI to modernize faster. Europe is now figuring out how to do the same, but on its own terms. That raises questions: → Can Europe foster dual-use innovation without compromising on sovereignty? → Will its regulatory and procurement structures allow AI-native defense to thrive? → And can startups fill the capability gaps faster than governments can reform? Europe has an advantage in deep tech talent, new political urgency, and the opportunity to build from scratch, without the baggage of legacy contractors. If we get it right, the most important defense startups of this decade won’t come out of Silicon Valley.
