Packaging accounts for 140M+ tons of waste each year. Here are actionable strategies my team has explored with clients to optimize packaging and save costs: First, we start with a Lifecycle Assessment (LCA) to identify the environmental hotspots and the most relevant actions to take. That analysis may lead us to many of the actions below. 1. Reduce Material Usage • Lightweight Materials: Use thinner and lighter materials that still provide adequate protection. • Minimal Packaging: Evaluate packaging design to eliminate unnecessary layers and excess space. 2. Use Sustainable Materials • Recycled Content: Opt for materials that are made from post-consumer or post-industrial recycled content. • Compostable/Biodegradable Options: Use materials like paper, cornstarch, or bioplastics that decompose naturally. • Renewable Resources: Incorporate plant-based materials like bamboo or hemp. 3. Design for Reuse and Recycling • Single-Material Packaging: Avoid mixing materials (e.g., plastic and metal) to make recycling easier. • Clear Labels: Mark packaging with recycling symbols and instructions to guide consumers. 4. Adopt Circular Economy Principles • Take-Back Programs: Offer incentives for customers to return used packaging for reuse or recycling. • Closed-Loop Systems: Work with suppliers to reclaim and reuse packaging. 5. Choose Responsible Suppliers • Source materials from suppliers that practice sustainable harvesting and manufacturing processes. • Ask suppliers to supply carbon and waste data associated with the packaging they provide. 6. Eliminating plastic waste in food packaging at a fraction of production cost? The food industry is a significant contributor to plastic waste, with packaging accounting for approximately 40.5% of all plastic produced in Europe. In the UK alone, supermarkets generate around 29.8 billion pieces of avoidable plastic waste annually, equating to over 1,000 pieces per household. Example: Seaweed farming can yield up to 10 tons of dry mass per hectare annually. →Lower Waste Management Expenses: Biodegradable and compostable, seaweed packaging reduces disposal costs. Example: The UK spends around £700 million annually on plastic waste disposal. →Decreased Environmental Compliance Costs: Eco-friendly packaging helps meet regulations, avoiding fines. Example: The EU's Single-Use Plastics Directive drives sustainable packaging adoption. →Enhanced Brand Value and Consumer Appeal: Sustainable packaging boosts reputation and sales. Example: 74% of consumers are willing to pay more for eco-friendly options. →Potential for Government Incentives: Sustainable practices can earn grants or tax breaks. Example: The UK Plastic Packaging Tax incentivises biodegradable alternatives like seaweed. Example project is Citizens of Soil | B Corp that has introduced single-serve pipettes for their Spanish Extra Virgin Olive Oil, utilising Notpla's seaweed-based materials that are 100% natural, biodegradable, home-compostable, vegan, and even edible. This innovative packaging aligns with their commitment to sustainability, offering consumers a convenient and eco-friendly way to enjoy premium olive oil. By adopting Notpla's solution, Citizens of Soil aims to reduce their environmental footprint and address plastic pollution in the food industry. ♻️ 𝗖𝗶𝗿𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹. For years we’ve told brands to 𝘥𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘨𝘯 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘳𝘦𝘤𝘺𝘤𝘭𝘢𝘣𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘺. Now, it’s about to cost them if they don’t. 💰 From now, UK producers will start paying 𝗺𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗽𝗘𝗣𝗥 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝘀 (higher for “red” non-recyclable formats, lower for “green” ones). In France, Citeo’𝘀 𝗲𝗰𝗼-𝗺𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 already hits PVC and carbon-black plastics with up to a 𝟭𝟬% 𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘁𝘆, while rewarding recycled content and reuse. And the 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗣𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗧𝗮𝘅 (£223.69 / tonne for packs with <30% recycled content) has pushed recycled-resin demand up 𝟳% 𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟮. Design choices are starting to carry real costs. Circular design is finally being rewarded. ⚙️ But let’s be honest, design rules only work if the system can keep up. Around ~𝟴𝟬% 𝗼𝗳 𝗨𝗞 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗹𝘀 still don’t collect films weekly. FlexCollect trials show 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝟰𝟬% 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝟴𝟱%, though capture rates remain lower as households adapt and infrastructure scales. Without matching collection and processing capacity, design progress risks outpacing the system. 🔍 And yet, small design tweaks make huge differences: 🟢 Switching to mono-PE film can boost recyclate yield by ~𝟮𝟱% ⚫ Removing carbon-black makes plastics visible to NIR sorters >𝟵𝟬% 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 🔵 Ditching full-body shrink sleeves can reduce PET sorting errors 𝗯𝘆 𝟲𝟬% Circular design isn’t about revolution — it’s about engineering out the barriers one label, pigment and adhesive at a time. 🌍 Ultimately, circular design is 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻. Nearly 𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗳 𝗼𝗳 𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴’𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗼𝘁𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗻𝘁 comes from making virgin materials. Get design right at the start and you cut emissions before recycling even begins. Across Europe, better packaging design could cut 𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴-𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗚𝗛𝗚 𝗲𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗯𝘆 (𝟮𝟱–𝟯𝟬%) 𝗯𝘆 𝟮𝟬𝟯𝟬. 💬 The question is no longer 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 we design for circularity, 𝘪𝘵’𝘴 𝘩𝘰𝘸 𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘸𝘦 𝘢𝘧𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘥 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘵𝘰? Something I wish more brands recognized: Broad terms like “biodegradable”, “compostable”, “made from plants”, or even “recyclable” don’t always mean eco-friendly. When used in isolation to describe packaging, they don’t say much at all. Take compostable PLA poly mailers as an example: ➡️ They’re partially from plants, but the PLA in them is typically derived largely from industrially produced corn. As a crop, corn isn’t necessarily more eco-friendly than the fossil fuels being replaced. Its production for non-food applications has driven: → Problematic land use conversion. → Excessive freshwater consumption. → Phosphorous and nitrogen runoff into our waterways. ➡️ LCA analysis shows that PLA actually has a higher carbon footprint than recycled and virgin LDPE. ➡️ Many brands seek this type of packaging as a way to minimize the risk of ocean plastic pollution. However, this material hasn’t been shown to degrade in marine environments. ➡️ While they can be made to be industrially or home compostable, they’re often heavily printed and contain adhesives and shipping labels. While these additions may still allow the mailer to be deemed compostable, they also: → Bring contaminants into the resulting compost. → Make it harder for composters to sell their output and generate the revenue needed for their operation. At EcoEnclose, we go deeper when making decisions about what packaging solutions to develop and offer. We recognize that while no solution is perfect, we can continuously work towards our north star of circularity. We also inform our brands about the tradeoffs being made. This makes decisions more complex but allows them to be more informed and thoughtful. We focus on: ➡️ Packaging with maximum levels of recycled content and post-consumer waste materials. ➡️ Packaging that can be readily recycled, ideally back into itself. ➡️ Catalyzing the market adoption of novel materials whose production shows strong potential to be restorative at scale. Examples include Sway seaweed, paper derived from agricultural waste, packaging derived from food waste and more. We recognize that novel materials are often unable to be recycled. They need market penetration that allows recyclers to invest in their collection, sorting and selling. Because of this, novel materials often have to be designed for compostability or even landfilling. I came across this new packaging solution from organicgirl recently which really caught my eye among rows of plastic bags and tubs. They call it PlantPack, it's molded from bamboo and bagasse (sugar cane fiber), recyclable in conventional paper/ cardboard streams (common in most markets). The complete package is paired with a 100% recycled PET lid. I'm sure there will be some criticism about the additional packaging weight, potentially higher water use and manufacturing impact of molded fiber. But in my opinion, the increased recyclability paired with use of rPET and renewable, natural materials feels like a net win relative to the status quo. Recently, I came across a small packaging optimization case that was quite inspiring. 👏 It was about packaging a foam roller.With the traditional method, securing the product required a large amount of air column bags, bubble wrap, and additional fillers to keep it stable inside the box. When you open the carton, you see a pile of #plastic.Yes, the product is protected — but the resource consumption is significant. By upgrading the internal box structure, simply redesigning how the carton holds the product, the same foam roller can now be securely fixed in place — without using any plastic cushioning at all. No extra materials.Just a different way of thinking. This made me realize again:Sustainability doesn’t always start with big slogans.Sometimes, it begins with a small detail. Optimizing a #packaging structure may mean: Reducing single-use plastic Lowering shipping weight Improving packing efficiency Cutting overall costs And when this kind of improvement is scaled across production,its impact multiplies.True sustainable design is not just about using “eco-friendly materials.”It’s about reducing unnecessary materials in the first place.
