This was a non-experimental cohort, cross sectional study of psychometrical nature, with the participation of 72 inmates composing the total female population of this establishment. Em A pequena prisao , Igor Mendes narra o processo de brutal repressao a que foram submetidos os 23 ativistas politicos considerados “perigosos” pela Justica e processados sob a acusacao de terem uma forte atuacao na organizacao de atos violentos nas manifestacoes populares de 2013 e 2014. Neste ensaio, retomo os relatos da experiencia carceraria vivida por Igor durante os meses em que esteve preso em Bangu, a partir de um dialogo com o conceito de "literatura de testemunho" e com trabalhos da criminologia critica.

The aim of this master's thesis is to examine how female prisoners convicted of violent crimes make accounts of the entanglements of using violence and being a victim of it. This thesis is also aimed to map out what kind of agency the entanglements produce for the imprisonised women when they account with the entaglements their own use of violence. The study is qualitative and the material consists of the interviews made (separately) with seven incarcerated women. The data was analyzed by appling sacksian membership categorization analysis. The epistemology of the study is social constructionist, and within the constructionism the scrutiny is based on the gendered violence paradigm. The study implicates that the female prisoners locate the entanglements of being the victim and using violence in the context of intimate partner violence. The majority of the women explained that they were victimized early on from the abuse on their childhood or youth and that this history of abuse had contributed for their ending up in violent relationships. In the first entanglement account -the symptomatic entanglement -women rationalized their problematic use of intoxicants resulting from being the victim of intimate partner violence. The women accounted that the intoxication led to their own use of violence. The women categorized their use of violence while intoxicated as a way of release their pent-up feelings that the victimization caused. Another style of constructing the entaglements of violence was the extreme self-defense by the victim against the abusive partner that brought on the death of the abuser. The entanglemets style in which I refer as the reactive entanglement included also offloading of the victim's feelings. The reactive entanglement style differed from the previously mentioned symptomatic entanglement in the way the relationship ended -it could only be finished by the tragic incident. The third entanglement style is the 'consequencel entanglement' style in which women situated their violent self-defense outside the context of relationship. The women illustrated that the violence they had experienced in their past relationships was so devastating that they rather use violence of their own than be revictimized. The women had lived down the violent relationships, but were imprisonized after defending the revictimization in the way that non-intentionally caused the death of the perpetrator. It may be concluded that this thesis is in line with the earlier studies on female prisones' violent experiences that usually began from their abusive childhood experiences. Thus women imply that they have been and are first and foremost victims. Women's agency was constructed minimal in their accounts. Even so, it would be important that the women could rewrite the words of their violent life stories with the help of proffessionals so that the women's agancy could be highlighted so that the women could move on towards the violent-free future

This case study examines the validity of Cesare Lombroso's 19th-century criminal anthropology theory by applying it to the case of Jeffrey Dahmer, one of America's most notorious serial killers. Lombroso's theory proposed that criminals could be identified through abnormal physical features and were evolutionary throwbacks ('atavists'). By analyzing Dahmer's crimes, physical characteristics, and psychological profile against Lombroso's framework, this study reveals fundamental flaws in biological determinism. Modern criminological analysis proves that Dahmer's criminality resulted from complex interactions of childhood trauma, mental illness, social isolation, and substance abuse rather than genetic or biological factors. This study concludes that while Lombroso's empirical methodology advanced criminology, his specific theories have been thoroughly disproven by modern science. The analysis highlights the importance of analyzing criminality from multiple angles in understanding criminal behavior and emphasizes essential lessons about early intervention, mental health treatment, and the dangers of biological determinism theories that stigmatize based on physical appearance.

Repercussão de uma pesquisa que analisou a existência da sociedade de consumo dentro do sistema prisional, verificando como ocorrem essas relações, este livro traz informações que, por vezes, são ocultados pelos veículos de comunicação. O resultado mostra os detalhes de uma sociedade que, apesar de ter sua rotina entre as grades e muros, encontra meios para diminuir o impacto gerado pela prisão com soluções que envolvem o comércio de bens de consumo, sejam eles drogas, aparelhos celulares, refeições, ou até mesmo venda de mão de obra, como, lavadores de roupa, cozinheiros, tatuadores, cabeleireiros etc.

Introdução "Labirinto jurídico-burocrático" é como denominamos o intrincado feixe de proibições, interdições, obrigações inscritas nas instâncias penais-judiciais nas quais se enredam as trajetórias dos "sobreviventes do cárcere" 2 após a passagem pela prisão, na busca infindável por uma cidadania inalcançável. É questão já enunciada no título de um nosso recente artigo coletivo-"Tramas da vida e maquinaria punitiva: vidas enredadas nas malhas da justiça criminal" (Telles et al., 2024). Com base em pesquisas etnográficas, descrevemos micro-histórias que evidenciam a opacidade da burocracia e das obrigações impostas pelo sistema de justiça criminal a mulheres e homens com passagem pelo cárcere e/ou com pendências não resolvidas com a justiça. Assim, "labirinto" é termo que nos ajuda a contextualizar a dinâmica do cotidiano vivenciado por pessoas que se veem enredadas em uma espécie de circuitos fechados, tornando quase impossível escapar da precariedade, da violência, da informalidade, da ilegalidade.

This work presents results of a comparative study between penitentiary treatment for men and women in Mexico. Firstly, a documental review was made to estimate the differences in operation between men's and women's penitentiaries in Mexico; right away, we expose reactions of a focus group integrated by penitentiary personnel working in a women's correctional center. It was found that there exists a differentiated treatment between men and women in prison that does not seem naturally justified, nor juridically pertinent. Starting from the administration, a distinct treatment persists between male and female inmates. Even if men correctional facilities have been improving recently, omissions, anti-constitutional practices and misstatements are still often seen in women correctional centers. Besides this, a comparative discourse is maintained among correctional officers, being more negative for those who work in women's penitentiaries, and transmitting a generalized feeling of abandon due to the lack of government support; correctional officers also believe that the main expressions of government behavior to inmates are those that show power and authority and very little that of balanced exchanges.

Na história da Saúde Pública, a atenção à saúde da mulher tem sido considerada uma área prioritária de assistência e principalmente discutida pensando na mulher que goza de liberdade física e jurídica, desconhecendo a realidade de mulheres presidiárias.  Objetivo: Este trabalho teve como objetivo conhecer a percepção de mulheres encarceradas em penitenciária no Sul do Estado de Minas Gerais em relação à atenção a Saúde da Mulher. Método: Trata-se de uma pesquisa de natureza qualitativa descritiva exploratória, realizada em Junho de 2010 em uma Penitenciária localizada no Sul do Estado de Minas Gerais. Foi realizada uma pré-entrevista, com intuito de conhecer o local e os sujeitos do estudo e posteriormente os dados foram coletados por meio de entrevista com questionário semi-estruturado. Resumo: Estudos sobre a justiça penal de países do hemisfério norte-ocidental apontam para transformações importantes do significado do cárcere nas três últimas décadas. De uma instituição desprestigiada e destinada a abolição, a prisão vem sendo assumida como um locus das políticas e estratégias punitivas que caracterizam a modernidade tardia naqueles países. Entendendo que a reabilitação e o "welfarismo" penal nunca foram a tônica dominante do sistema prisional brasileiro, como podemos caracterizar as nossas prisões? O presente trabalho discute o cotidiano do cárcere a partir das ações e significados dos atores sociais que transitam no espaço de uma grande unidade prisional do Estado da Bahia. Resultados iniciais permitem afirmar que a prisão está mais adaptada aos jogos de poder entre estes atores do que a qualquer estratégia geral no sentido seja da reabilitação seja da punição.

The multidimensional relationship among women, crime, and mental health has picked up scientific interest only after the 1970s and in response to the pressure of the globally rising rates of crimes committed by women since then. In hopes of expanding this scientific interest, this paper gathers national and international research that adopted a gender-based approach to the mental health of incarcerated women. In this vein, databases such as Science Direct, Research Gate, Mendeley, Wiley Online Library, Google Scholar, TRDizin, ULAKBİM, DergiPark and TURKSTAT were screened for English and Turkish publications using keywords that are related to female and male inmates' mental health. For a comprehensive portrayal of the current situation, the evolution of the approaches to the criminality of women and national and international statistics about incarcerated women and their crimes were discussed in addition to offering an extensive compilation of the studies that compare the mental health of female offenders to that of the general population and male offenders. Thus, this review aims to contribute to the studies, programs, and interventions that both consider gender-based differences and focus on the female offenders' mental health both before and during incarceration. The findings of the review indicated that gender-sensitive biopsychosocial interventions should be developed for the mental health of female inmates, and that legal and healthcare curricula should be updated accordingly.

Este artigo teve como escopo identificar e analisar quais as variáveis que influenciaram na prática religiosa de mulheres antes de terem sido presas na Unidade Prisional Feminina (UPF)/Acre. Para tanto foi utilizada uma regressão logística sobre dados primários obtidos, via aplicação de questionários/entrevistas, em 146 mulheres que cumprem pena ou aguardam julgamento na UPF. Como resultado, as variáveis do modelo (estatisticamente significativas) como determinantes na conduta daquela mulher entrevistada, que disse praticar uma religião antes de ter sido presa, foram: pais casados; trabalhava; teve filhos na adolescência; e anos de estudo. This study aims to examine the reintegration process of female prisoners into society in the context of public sector employment. Within the scope of the study, employment rates of female prisoners in the public sector were analyzed based on the employment data from the Turkish Employment Agency (ISKUR) for the years 2019-2023, and periodical changes were assessed. A SWOT analysis was conducted to evaluate the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats related to the employment of female prisoners in the public sector. According to the research findings, while the public sector offers a stable employment opportunity for female prisoners, low and fluctuating employment rates, lack of vocational training, and societal prejudices emerge as significant obstacles. Moreover, systematic and societal barriers hinder the employment of female prisoners in the public sector. The low and variable employment rates indicate the absence of a stable employment policy for female prisoners. Although relatively more women were employed in 2019, 2020, and 2023, the numbers were significantly lower in 2021 and 2022. In this context, successful international practices, such as the "Ban the Box" policies in the United States and rehabilitation-based programs in Europe, serve as examples for potential policy reforms in Turkey. In conclusion, overcoming legal and societal barriers, implementing inclusive employment policies, and strengthening collaboration between governmental institutions and non-governmental organizations are essential to facilitating the integration of female prisoners into the public sector. Expanding vocational rehabilitation programs, increasing awareness campaigns, and improving public employment policies will support the reintegration of female prisoners into society. Sustainable employment opportunities in the public sector will enhance social justice and encourage the active participation of female prisoners in society.

The article intends to raise the issue involving the relationship between the state and the incarcerated person, which includes violations of basic rights by the State. For this, the text uses the notion of the banality of evil of Hannah Arendt as reflective base to understand the attitude of the state in governmentality - from the concept of Michel Foucault - the Brazilian penitentiary system. The paper demonstrates that violations of fundamental rights are normalized to the State, as manager and guarantor of the system and enforcing rights, especially the fundamental, and make the direction of the performance of government tactics.

A partir de uma pesquisa etnográfica realizada em unidades prisionais femininas no Rio de Janeiro, este artigo propõe uma reflexão sobre a maneira pela qual mulheres encarceradas compreendem o sentido da punição a elas imposta. De forma mais específica, trazendo relatos de campo, descrevo como algumas mulheres interpretam a punição no que diz respeito ao agente responsável
pelo encarceramento. Minhas reflexões giram em torno da frase que intitula este artigo, “foi Deus que me colocou aqui”, registrada diversas vezes em meu caderno de campo durante a conversa com diferentes mulheres. Assim, considerando esses relatos, proponho discutir a seguinte questão: como as mulheres descrevem e conferem sentido ao encarceramento e à pena a elas imposta?

Aborda o papel da biblioteca no cárcere no que concerne às atividades relacionadas ao clube de leitura no presídio feminino de Sergipe. O artigo apresenta os resultados de uma atividade realizada com 24 internas do Prefem dentro do contexto da biblioteca prisional. Foram apresentados os contextos do relacionando abusivo presentes na literatura do livro trabalhado, 50 tons de cinza, relacionando as práticas de abusos existentes na vida das internas e as do livro. Foram relacionados os impactos de poder entre o homem e as internas no que confere ao resultado fim que a levou ao cárcere, expondo conectores nos motivos que as levaram até esse fim. Nas considerações finais foram observadas a importância da biblioteca prisional e do profissional bibliotecário quanto ao seu papel social em desenvolver temáticas que possam ajudar no empoderamento feminino e outras temáticas que possam auxiliar a vida da mulher no cárcere.

Este artigo tem como foco aprofundar a compreensão da vida de Jacky, pai do escritor e sociólogo francês Édouard Louis, nascido em 1992, cujas obras são notáveis por serem autobiográficas e eivadas de análises sociológicas. Nesse sentido, Édouard Louis, por meio da autobiografia, denuncia as dificuldades e os desafios econômicos que levaram seu pai, Jacky, a assumir trabalhos exaustivos, resultando em sérios impactos em sua saúde física e mental, marcando profundamente a sua trajetória. Desse modo, analisaremos como as dinâmicas sociais e as relações de poder moldaram a vida de Jacky e deixaram marcas indeléveis em seu corpo, conforme retratado nas narrativas
édouardianas.

Se estudió el clima social de un Centro Penitenciario Femenil. Para ello se llevó a cabo una investigación que analizó con la Escala de Clima Social-CIES-(especial para penitenciarías), la percepción del clima social de las internas del Centro de Reinserción Social para Mujeres de Aguascalientes. El trabajo se dividió en cuatro etapas: 1) administración de la Escala-CIES-al total de población interna en el escenario de estudio, 2) tratamiento de datos, 3) a partir de los datos identificar el clima social percibido por las internas y 4) generación discusiones y conclusiones. Los resultados permitieron conocer el clima social que mantiene la institución sede del estudio, así como encontrar diferencias entre la percepción del clima social de internas consideradas ajustadas a las normas intramuros con respecto a aquellas que se consideran de riesgo.

Crime is a social phenomenon which poses a threat to the social order and traditional value systems and norms. İt is not sufficient set against crime phenomenon with only criminal penalties and rehabilitation activities. Classic and contemporary sociological theories have found that crime phenomenon associated with many social variables such as family, education, poverty, unemployment, age and gender. The aim of this research is to examine the relationship between education level, number of siblings and individual criminal behavior. After obtaining permission from Republic of Turkey The Ministry of Justice General Directorate of Prisons and Detension Houses; 388 prisoners found guilty on intentional homicide, theft, abduction of girls, rape, wounding, robbery, holding, using and selling drugs and money scam in Çanakkale E-type closed prison are given a ten-question survey form. Questionnaires are filled under the supervision of social workers and law enforcement officers who work in the psycho-social unit of prison. The collected data is converted into frequency tables with the help of SPSS 16.0 package program. As a result, it is found out that great majority of the prisoners are primary school graduate; they come from families of five or more children; a considerable part of them are school dropouts. Apart 702 Mehmet Devrim TOPSES from that, it is determined that prisoners' families have a lower level of education than their children, especially illiteracy among prisoners' mothers is so common. The findings of the study support the theoretical approaches of Hirschi and Farrington.

resumo O texto analisa a escritura de internas do sistema prisional sergipano, fomentada em intervenção cultural de coletivo de artistas locais, durante o ano de 2012, quando o total da população carcerária contava 239 mulheres. O formato livro dado, então, à síntese de registros autorais das presidiárias configura-se em corpus privilegiado na investigação sobre regimes de práticas discursivas (Foucault), tanto quanto no interesse pelos modos de apropriação do gênero lírico, enquanto dicção.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi realizar uma analise das repercussoes sociais e familiares das penas por trafico em homens e mulheres que as cumprem. O recrutamento dos participantes deu-se a partir do Snowball com a selecao de tres homens e uma mulher. A pesquisa de campo foi realizada nos domicilios dos entrevistados, que residem em Brasilia-DF. Utilizou-se como metodos de instrumento da pesquisa a tecnica do ciclo de vida e genograma, e ainda foi realizada uma entrevista semiestruturada para que se pudessem explorar os objetivos da pesquisa a partir da fala de cada individuo. Os beneficios da pesquisa contribuirao para o avanco cientifico, porem podem nao estar diretamente ligados ao participante,. Quanto as conclusoes da pesquisa, as repercussoes familiares foram percebidas como fonte de apoio para que a reincidencia no trafico de drogas nao aconteca novamente. Education has borne the burden of prisoners' reform since the early days of modern prison. Several studies attest to its transformative potential, taking a short-term perspective. Rarely the experience of being a student, while incarcerated, is examined in the context of the wider biography. This paper uses perspective transformation theory as a point of departure to study how imprisonment influences adult learning. Building on biographical narratives of ten foreign national students of a Second Chance School at the largest Greek remand establishment, and participant observation of relevant class discussions, we argue that imprisonment impedes perspective transformation, strengthening structural inequalities and distorted views of incarcerated students' position in the social world, that extend far beyond the prison's walls. We further discuss the perceived importance of the educational relationship, and the ethical implications that educators who work in prisons should consider, as part of their work.

O presente artigo visa discutir questões relativas à visita íntima para mulheres privadas de liberdade no contexto atual do sistema prisional do estado do Rio de Janeiro. Tendo como referência, dados qualitativos e quantitativos, de fontes primárias e secundárias, análise documental e revisão bibliográfica, a pesquisa propõe discutir de que modo as decisões estatais relacionadas à distribuição das apenadas pelas unidades do estado são diretamente direcionadas por representações morais que impactam na autonomia sexual das mulheres privadas de liberdade. A pesquisa evidencia que a reorganização e gestão do corpo preso, no contexto específico, impacta diretamente na consolidação do direito à visita e no não acesso aos parlatórios, culminando num processo punição adicional dessas mulheres que perpassa pelo controle moral de corpos femininos fortalecendo o processo de abandono afetivo como parte de uma punição adicional, não prevista em lei.

The present study intends to be a contribution to understand affections and emotions associated with female psychopathy. Although there are several studies aiming to understand psychopathy, there is still a gap in the integration of such a concept in affective dimensions, as well as a scarcity of surveys conducted in the female population. Sixty-three women confined to prison, located in the North region of Portugal, participated in this study. Participants were assessed using the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS), the Levenson’s Self-Report Psychopathy Scale (LSRP), and the Hare’s Psychopathy Checklist–Revised (PCL-R). Results showed that only nine women presented moderate scores of psychopathy. Moreover, women with higher psychopathy scores revealed deficits in positive emotional abilities, and secondary psychopathy was related with predominance of negative affection. Objectives: The main purpose of the present study is to consider the rate of impression in group mental rehabilitation based on the regulation of self recognition sources on augmentation of self-respect among 14-to 18-year old female prisoners. Method: 30 female social seekers were randomly selected from the whole population, 15 of which were gathered in control group and the rest 15 within evidence group. First, GHQ papers (General Health Questionnaire) were distributed among the girls in order to evaluate their mental status. Pre-and Post-Cooper Smith self-respect tests were formulated both before and after interventions on experiment group. Interventions were accomplished during 9 sessions within three months by group consulting based on the configuration of self-recognition (collected by Younesi 2007). Considering the point that remedy plans are not utilized for the evidence group and they are evaluated by gathered marks achieved by the two tests to compare average discriminations. Results: After applying remedy interventions, social seekers from experimental group manifested meaningful augmentation during the test of self-esteem invented by Cooper Smith compared with social help seekers from control group. Discussions: The findings indicated that group mental rehabilitation would increase self-esteem in its four dimensions among the subjects. The findings showed that mental rehabilitation based on self knowledge resources is useful for improvement of juvenile detainee's self-esteem.

Este estudo tem por finalidade compreender a percepção das mulheres privadas de liberdade em uma unidade prisional do Oeste do Paraná, com intuito de analisar seu início na vida criminal. Para tanto, utilizou-se dos métodos qualitativos e explicativos. O método qualitativo avalia individualmente cada uma das participantes e o método explicativo visa identificar os fatores que contribuem ou determinam para a ocorrência dos fenômenos. Como instrumento para a coleta de dados, o estudo pautou-se em entrevistas semiestruturadas realizadas com uma amostra de cinco participantes. Todas as entrevistas foram gravadas em áudio, transcritas e categorizadas de acordo com os objetivos. Como principal resultado, verificou-se que de maneira geral, a necessidade financeira é o principal motivo para a entrada e permanência da mulher no crime, contudo também há outros fatores desencadeadores, sendo estes, morte do companheiro, doença em algum membro da família e até mesmo o envolvimento com as drogas...

The consolidation of incarceration as the main tool for social control of unwanted populations has constituted a relevant instrument through which necropolitical extermination is manifested in capitalist societies, a project firmly structured by race, class and gender. In this context, prison has been established as an institution traditionally aimed at a male, young and marginalized population, being idealized and implemented based on androcentric structures, but from which women have never been exempt. With this, concern arises about the impact of prison on women, the treatment they receive and the meeting of their medical needs, mainly with regard to the promotion and attention to sexual and reproductive health. However, although imprisoned women have progressively gained space in scientific investigations in the last two decades, most of the work is linked to motherhood and based on the perspective of the child's best interest and child health, which is why the present research focused primarily on women's comprehensive health. In view of this, the objective was to evaluate in depth the National Policy for Attention to Women in Situations of Deprivation of Liberty and Those Leaving the Prison System in terms of health practices at the Instituto Penal Feminino Desembargadora Auri Moura Costa, in Ceará. To this end, the following specific objectives were established: a) Investigate how health practices are carried out in the Prison Unit studied, based on the perception of its actors; b) Analyze the content of the Policy in order to understand its conceptual bases and guiding paradigms; c) Describe the social, economic and political context of the Policy's formulation and trajectory. In pursuit of the proposed objectives, a qualitative approach was adopted using bibliographic and documentary research combined with field research, where ethnographically inspired participant observation was used at IPFDAMC and Creche Amadeu Barros Leal. In addition, open in-depth interviews and questionnaires were carried out, through which 19 women (inmates and ex-prisoners) were interviewed and information was collected from the prison administration and medical team. Aiming for an extensive, dense and multidimensional assessment, Lazar's (2007) Feminist Critical Discourse Analysis (ACFD) was used to analyze the collected data, covering the four axes of In-Depth Assessment (Rodrigues, 2008). It was found that imprisoned women live in the light of motherhood or in the shadow of invisibility, being subjected to cruel and degrading treatments intensified by gender violence. As a result, the physical, emotional and psychological marks point to the imposition of a life sentence, both from a social and biological point of view. It was concluded that imprisonment is preceded by a series of extrajudicial sanctions to which women are subjected, in a context of marked inequality in which prison is used as public policy. In this scenario, women continue to be disproportionately affected by prison and unworthy of the problems caused by it, within a social structure of imposing poverty, being faced within the scope of public policies. Therefore, the work presents contributions to the study of female prison health and the permanent impact of prison on the physical, mental and social well-being of women prisoners and their communities.

Fiziksel, zihinsel, çevresel, sosyoekonomik, kültürel ve benzeri nedenlerle bilgi kaynaklarından yararlanmaları sınırlanan kişi ve grupların bilgi gereksinim ve davranışları bu sınırlılıklar bağlamında dikkate alınmalıdır. Bu çalışmanın amacı, anılan gruptaki mahkûmların bilgi gereksinimleri, bilgi davranışları ve bu bağlamda etken olan faktörler ile karşılaşılan sorunlara ilişkin kuramsal bir çerçeve oluşturmaktır. Çalışmada betimleme yöntemi kullanılmış, yerli literatürün sınırlılığı nedeni ile daha çok yabancı literatür taranarak genel çerçevede bilgi davranışlarına ilişkin olgu, kavram ve yaklaşımlar, özel olarak da mahkûmların bilgi gereksinimi ve davranışları ile onları biçimlendiren etmenler araştırılmış ve irdelenmiştir. Çalışmanın sonunda, mahkûmların bilgi gereksinimi ile davranışlarının özgür vatandaşlarınkilerle benzerlik gösterse de cezaevi (ve/veya tutukevi) ortam ve koşullarının etkisiyle biçimlenen özel, sınırlı ve sorunlu karakteristikleri olduğu sonucuna varılmıştır.

Although consensual same-sex sexual relationships in female prisons have been a topic of scholarly discourse, it has received little attention in African countries, and South Africa is no exception. Consensual same-sex sexual relationships between females in African prisons have received little attention by researchers since studies on prison sex in Africa tend to focus on the sexual relationships between male prisoners, particularly the coercive nature of such relationships. Drawing on the retrospective narratives of six female former prisoners, this study examines the consensual nature of same-sex sexual relationships in South African female prisons. One of the findings of this study suggests that consensual same-sex sexual relationships in South African female prisons are pervasive. It was reported that the motivations for female prisoners' engagement in consensual sexual relationships with other females in prison are the desire to satisfy material, sexual, and emotional needs, as well as, the desire for friendship and companionship.

O encarceramento no sistema prisional brasileiro restringe-se ao controle social e conduz mulheres dissidentes ao completo abandono afetivo. Pesquisa participante realizada no Sul do Brasil que objetivou conhecer necessidades, sentimentos e experiências de mulheres em conflito com a lei penal. Sete mulheres egressas do cárcere ou no cumprimento de penalidades alternativas participaram da pesquisa, além das 5 pesquisadoras. Os resultados evidenciaram as experiências de cárcere tomadas com mulheres transgressoras, sobreviventes às reiteradas violações emolduradas pela discriminação, estigma e abandono familiar. A aproximação e acolhida acadêmica apresenta-se como uma necessidade e contribuição para o rompimento do ciclo de violência, a partir de ações colaborativas em favor da reinserção e da paz social.

Resumo: Estudos sobre a justiça penal de países do hemisfério norte-ocidental apontam para transformações importantes do significado do cárcere nas três últimas décadas. De uma instituição desprestigiada e destinada a abolição, a prisão vem sendo assumida como um locus das políticas e estratégias punitivas que caracterizam a modernidade tardia naqueles países. Entendendo que a reabilitação e o "welfarismo" penal nunca foram a tônica dominante do sistema prisional brasileiro, como podemos caracterizar as nossas prisões? O presente trabalho discute o cotidiano do cárcere a partir das ações e significados dos atores sociais que transitam no espaço de uma grande unidade prisional do Estado da Bahia. Resultados iniciais permitem afirmar que a prisão está mais adaptada aos jogos de poder entre estes atores do que a qualquer estratégia geral no sentido seja da reabilitação seja da punição.

Building supportive communities and improving programming for incarcerated persons can be difficult due to stereotypes derived from culture, media, and personal upbringing. Such stereotypes, like the narratives from which they are derived, are socially constructed. To develop an understanding of how those narratives construct "others" and to transform stereotypes of incarcerated "others," we adopted a communication perspective on the problem of overcoming stigma, designed a course to promote transformative learning, and employed service-learning as a way to bring students into contact with incarcerated men in a regional prison facility. Students' reflections over two semesters in the service-learning course revealed that interaction with people who were incarcerated transformed their beliefs and values about those with whom they worked, resulting in an attitude of "just mercy" toward people who were incarcerated and making possible a more humane understanding of themselves and those members of our communities who are incarcerated.
