Social Cooperatives

This collective book challenges the pervasive narrative of a dying Venice, arguing instead that the city is experiencing a profound crisis from which signs of rebirth are emerging. Through a collection of four essays, the volume investigates the ‘wicked problems’ facing the city, from overtourism and depopulation to environmental degradation and social inequality. Adopting interdisciplinary perspectives, the authors apply critical theoretical frameworks to analyze how global market forces impact the local urban fabric. The book moves beyond diagnosis to explore tangible forms of resistance and alternative pathways. Case studies on the resilient neighborhood of Santa Marta and the work of social cooperatives integrating inmates into the local economy showcase bottom-up initiatives that foster social infrastructure, inclusion, and a more sustainable urban life. Ultimately, Venice Is Not Dying presents a counter-narrative of a city actively fighting for its future, highlighting the vital role of community, social innovation, and the reclamation of urban space as a living, inhabitable place rather than a mere tourist commodity. Born from the “Economic Sociology” course held by Professor Busacca within the PISE (Philosophy, International Studies, and Economics) program at Ca’ Foscari University of Venice and written with three talented students, this collective book is the result of a pedagogical approach to teaching economic sociology inspired by pragmatism and experimentalism, where sociology becomes a source of practical solutions to real problems.

Climate modeling work has suggested biofuel wheat production in southern Saskatchewan, Canada, during the mid-21 st century will be influenced by increasing annual precipitation, including precipitation increases in every month except July and August, increasing daily mean, minimum, and maximum air temperatures throughout the year, and substantial increases in the risk of wheat heat shock (temperatures>32.0 • C). In the current study, we compare prior modeling predictions to historical trends in the number of days with maximum temperatures >32.0 • C during July and August, the number of hours with maximum temperatures >32.0 • C during July, as well as monthly and annual total precipitation, mean daily temperatures, and mean maximum daily temperatures for climate stations throughout southern Saskatchewan. We find no evidence of increasing trends for wheat heat shock days or hours during the mid-summer period in this region. In contrast, the majority of stations exhibit significantly declining temporal trends in wheat heat shock days and hours. Historical precipitation and temperature trends for the climate stations under consideration in southern Saskatchewan display significant inter-and intra-station heterogeneity throughout the year in terms of whether or not trends are evident, as well as their magnitude and direction. Consequently, caution must be exercised when extrapolating any case study analyses at a particular location to larger geographic areas of the province. Based on our analyses of historical climate data for southern Saskatchewan, it is unclear whether climate models are accurately predicting future climate change impacts on biofuel wheat production for this region in the mid-21 st century.

Esta investigación  propone salidas al conflicto armado en Colombia a través del modelo cooperativo y desde la aplicación de  la  norma,  para  optimizar  las  condiciones  actuales  de  la  población  desmovilizada  en  este  país.  Es  un  trabajo  de  corte cuantitativo. Emplea el cuestionario como instrumento para la obtención y análisis de información. Este ha sido aplicado a 58sujetos  pertenecientes  a  las  cooperativas  que  representan  los  5  subsectores  más  importantes  que  aportan  al  desarrollo económico  de  la  ciudad  de  Pereira,  Colombia.  Dichos  sectores  son  el  agroindustrial,  transporte,  servicios,  seguridad  y financiero.  Los  resultados  alcanzados  dejan  entrever  que  las  entidades  cooperativas  tienen  diseñados  códigos  de  buen gobierno y están dispuestas a trabajar para reconstruir el tejido social desde el interior de estas organizaciones. Sin embargo, no se cuenta con la infraestructura ni con la voluntad política para realizarlo. Se concluye que es imperante diseñar códigos de  buen  gobierno  corporativo  que  generen  programas  de  participación  que  comprendan  la  solidaridad,  la  inclusión,  la formación y todos aquellos aspectos que se requieren para construir territorios de paz.


The  purpose  of this  research  was  to  propose  solutions  to  the armed  conflict  in  Colombia  through  the cooperative  model, from the application of the norm, allowing to optimize the current conditions of the demobilized population in this country. This research was quantitative, and the questionnaire was used as an instrument to obtain and analyze information, which was administered to 58 subjects belonging to cooperatives that represent the 5 most important subsectors that contribute to the economic development of the city of Pereira, Colombia; These are: agroindustrial, transportation, services, security and financial. The results achieved suggest that cooperative entities have designed codes of good governance, and are willing to work to rebuild the social fabric from within these organizations, but they do not have the infrastructure or the political will to do so. In conclusion, it is imperative to design codes of good corporate governance that generate participation programs that include solidarity, inclusion, training and all those aspects that are required to build territories of peace.

This chapter offers a comprehensive assessment of the global cooperative movement, tracing its historical roots, diverse trajectories, and contemporary transformations. While the Rochdale Pioneers in 19th-century England are widely credited as the cooperative movement’s origin, this chapter challenges this singular narrative by highlighting the multiplicity of cooperative traditions that emerged independently or were adapted through cultural hybridization across the globe. The development of cooperatives in Europe, Asia, Africa, and Latin America is explored, revealing how local socio-political contexts, colonial legacies, and indigenous philosophies shaped distinct cooperative models. The analysis identifies a dual dynamic in the movement: a mainstream, economically driven stream aligned with the International Cooperative Alliance, and a transformative stream rooted in community solidarity, sustainability, and social justice. Contemporary debates are discussing degeneration risks, the role of multistakeholder models, and the re-emergence of cooperatives as tools for ecological and social transformation. This chapter concludes by emphasizing the importance of inter-cooperative collaboration, youth engagement, and alliances with broader solidarity economy actors as key strategies to strengthen cooperatives as agents of inclusive and sustainable development. We think that it is more valuable to recognize this diversity in order to engage with it not only to help ensure that the cooperative movement is strong but also to ensure that cooperatives are able to fulfill their most basic and important function: to make people’s lives better. Recognizing the movement’s diversit(ies) is key to strengthening cooperatives and helping them fulfill their core purpose, which is improving their lives.

Keith Hart was a Cambridge-trained social anthropologist who had considerable influence on the discipline in Britain and elsewhere for more than half a century. His interests ranged far beyond the sub-discipline of economic anthropology, though the "informal sector" and  money were topics to which he returned again and again. This obituary was prepared soon after his passing in November 2025. It contains elements of the memoir, since we were colleagues from 1984 in Cambridge and remained close in the new century.

Objective: This research aimed to evaluate the social audit performance of cooperatives in Northeastern Cagayan, Philippines, focusing on their compliance with RA 9520, the Philippine Cooperative Code of 2008. The study assessed cooperatives' fulfillment of social responsibility and governance obligations. Theoretical framework: The study was based on the principles of social responsibility and cooperative governance. It aimed to explore how cooperatives in the region integrate these principles into their operations and assess their compliance with the legal requirements outlined in RA 9520. Method: The study employed a descriptive research design, utilizing survey questionnaires and interviews with cooperative officers to collect data from cooperatives in Northeastern Cagayan. This approach provided a comprehensive assessment of the cooperatives' social audit performance. Results and conclusion: The study found that most of the cooperatives in Northeastern Cagayan were micro cooperatives with a focus on clean and green initiatives, health and sanitation, and providing goods to the indigent. However, only 80% had allocated a budget for social audit requirements, and lack of sincerity and budget constraints were identified as main challenges in implementing social responsibility programs. Implications of the research: The study's practical implications for cooperatives include code compliance and social responsibility programs. Adequate budget allocation and sincere implementation promote sustainable development. Cooperatives play a vital role in this endeavor. Originality and Value: This study adds to literature by examining social audit performance of cooperatives in Northeastern Cagayan, focusing on compliance with RA 9520 and effectiveness of social responsibility programs. Findings guide future research in this area.

In Italy, cooperatives emerged as a key vehicle for solving problems. As these problems evolved, so did the cooperative identity. Path-dependence analysis is a methodological approach that seeks to explain discontinuous processes by means of notions like inertia, incorporating both contingent and reactive processes and events. A literature based on organizational path dependence is drawn on to analyze how an interaction between institutional and legal processes generated an inertial pull towards "cooperativizing" sectors of the Italian economy, in particular, with reference to the emergence of a distinct species of multi-stakeholder enterprises with both regenerative, integrative and federative dimensions. The article follows Bennison (2024) in adapting Schreyögg, Sydow, and Holtmann (2011)'s organizational path dependence analysis to interpret the evolution of a diverse ecosystem of multi-stakeholder cooperatives in Italy. By simplifying the analysis to a number of key historical episodes and events, it attempts to demonstrate the importance of non-linear processes of inertia and reinforcement in contributing to a regime's organizational evolution. Different from the existing literature, the article argues that path-dependent processes do not always result in a deterministic "lock-in", but can also facilitate open-ended outcomes. A broader goal is to show how the innovative type of stakeholder management adopted by multi-stakeholder cooperatives achieves economic, organizational and entrepreneurial outcomes beyond merely solving agency problems, by so doing providing a template for other countries and regions seeking robust strategies for dealing with various dimensions of the contemporary pluri-crisis.

En España la crisis económica ha tenido un correlato directo en el sector periodístico y conducido al cierre de medios de referencia y al aumento de los despidos y la precarización del sector. En este contexto adverso, las cooperativas de medios se han convertido en una vía de salida para muchos profesionales por cuanto ofrecen la posibilidad de construir un periodismo autónomo e identificado con el interés de los propios trabajadores y de la ciudadanía. Este artículo esboza una cartografía de las cooperativas periodísticas en España durante el período de crisis económica que arranca en 2008. Se intenta caracterizar cuál es el origen e ideario de estos proyectos, y cuáles son sus principales modelos de organización y sostenibilidad a fin de garantizar una agenda informativa alternativa e independiente.

The narrative of Saskatchewan"s health reform efforts showed that the government focused on the politics of health care, specifically the need to manage the diverse and often competing interests of health care stakeholders. It also reveals the dynamic between the stakeholders, the press and public opinion. As health stakeholders expressed their concerns about health care reform, the press and the public became more critical and the government backed away from its commitment to health reform.

Cooperatives have spread across virtually all continents. Today, the International Cooperative Alliance (ICA) recognises over 3 million cooperatives with 1 billion cooperative members or about 12% of the human population and serving many more members of the public, collectively owning trillions in assets. This handbook provides a comprehensive introduction to the subject and the current state of affairs with regard to the study of cooperation in the economy generally and of the cooperative and related sectors particularly. It highlights the essential issues and debates; provides a future research agenda, outlining the distinctions and similarities between individual and (inter)organisational cooperation; and explores the connections of cooperative economics and management to fundamental ethical principles. This book examines coopetition and the similarities and differences between competitive economics and cooperative economics, identifying to what extent and how cooperative economics and management are more capable of addressing the problems of global neoliberalism, such as ecological collapse, wealth inequity, value capture, and distribution, including via online platforms and social/relational problems. This book offers a variety of new research and theory-building from various disciplines, particularly focusing on the fields of economics and management but extending beyond these disciplines to domains such as sociology, psychology, anthropology, and political science. It will become the standard reference work for not only a broad and large audience of scholars, researchers, and students but also interested professionals, policymakers, regulators, and cooperators in the field wishing to orient themselves in a global, rapidly developing movement and field of study with reference to issues of producing and allocating resources and focusing on the impact of cooperation on issues like risk, trust, the development of preferences, institutional governance, networks, and inequity.

Janusz Korczak/Henryk Goldszmit wraz z grupą społeczników doprowadził do otwarcia Domu Sierot przy ul. Krochmalnej 92, inicjując tym samym jedną z najbardziej niezwykłych instytucji XX wieku. W tym samym roku Edward Abramowski opublikował studium Czym mają być związki przyjaźni. Podkreślał w nim, że tytułowe związki -wbrew temu, co twierdzili jego oponenci -"nie wymagają żadnego idealizmu ani wyjątkowych ludzi". Dowodził, że są one rozwiązaniem dla tych, którzy uznają, że tradycyjne instytucje filantropijne są "zniewagą wyrządzoną ludzkiej solidarności, której jałmużna jest parodią", stanowiąc "kastowe, przestarzałe instytucje, które upośledzają ludzi moralnie" (Abramowski 1912). Podobnie o filantropii wypowiadał się Korczak. O tym, że dzieciom należy płacić za pracę, pisał: "Chcąc wytworzyć dobrych obywateli, nie mamy potrzeby tworzyć idealistów. […] Dlaczego nie mamy możliwie wcześniej nauczyć dziecka, czym jest pieniądz, wynagrodzenie za pracę, aby czuło wartość niezależności, którą daje zarobek, aby poznało złe i dobre strony posiadania. ción y Desarrollo Agroalimentario (Ciinda), finalizó el pasado mes de marzo una investigación sobre el sistema de gestión de las asociaciones formales e informales rurales del municipio de Tabio, Cundinamarca. El problema central de la investigación radicó en caracterizar las formas asociativas de pequeños productores en los ámbitos de la producción, la transformación y los servicios en los subsectores del sistema agroalimentario en Tabio. Para este artículo mostraremos el caso particular de las asociaciones informales Jóvenes Líderes Empresarios, Colactabio y Acueducto El Hornillo. En la realización de la investigación se empleó el modelo investigación acción participativa (iap) con talleres participativos para establecer la matriz de debilidades, oportunidades, fortalezas y amenazas (dofa), visitas veredales y modelo de encuesta sobre variables de gestión.

Recreation, leisure and tourism is an essential part of human life and different forms of recreation are shaped naturally by individual interests but also by the surrounding social construction. Participating in recreation, leisure and tourism is a healthy alternative for positive behavior, which leads to opportunities for learning and living a balanced, productive life. The purpose of this reflection piece is to discuss the contributions of documented theory on how recreation and leisure can be used to promote social inclusion. Las  cooperativas  de  personas  que  recuperan  su  libertad  son  un  tipo particular de cooperativas sociales que se propone la reintegración socio-laboral de sectores que padecen la exclusión estructural del trabajo asalariado, la  criminalización  selectiva  del  sistema  penal  y  una  condena  estigmatizante  que profundiza las dificultades para la reproducción de la vida cuando salen al medio libre. Este trabajo es una sistematización sobre este sector en el AMBA que triangula el avance parcial de un relevamiento a través de encuestas junto a  otros  hallazgos  derivados  de  entrevistas  y  observación  participante  y  una  indagación documental. Se enmarca en el proyecto “Cooperativas de personas que recuperan su libertad: un análisis desde la perspectiva de la economía social, popular y solidaria” (UNTREF, Flury 2023-2025) cuyo objetivo es describir y analizar las cooperativas de trabajo formadas por personas que atravesaron la experiencia del encierro, incluyendo quienes estuvieron privadas de la libertad, con arresto domiciliario y familiares. Mediante un análisis de contenido de sus portadas y cuestionarios abiertos a los propios medios, se detecta una prevalencia de temas sociales. Entre las fuentes se observa un predominio de las expertas y las primarias frente a las institucionales. Asimismo, se percibe que las prácticas colaborativas con medios afines son habituales para la elaboración y difusión de contenidos.

This chapter explores how entrepreneurship developed by homosexual populations in industrialized countries has allowed this minority to establish a dialogue between politics and economics, which is no longer the case today.  First, this chapter examines how entrepreneurship allows homosexual populations in highly industrialized countries to limit the discrimination they have experienced in organizational contexts. Following World War II, this type of entrepreneurship displays an emancipatory character. By participating in the emergence of the inclusive agenda, queer entrepreneurs have also enabled the community as a whole to break out of a political order of systematic discrimination.  However, it is this same agenda that, in the businesses that queer people have created, can lead them to submit to the heteronormative order and exclude those who do not subscribe to it (Rumen & Ozturk, 2019). The second part of this chapter shows how the inclusive agenda, a product of entrepreneurial emancipation, now limits the renewal of initiatives and economic models proposed by queer populations. Political counter-participation is therefore a way to preserve the originality of gay and lesbian entrepreneurial contributions. It takes the form of an entrepreneurial queering that can be either defensive or proactive by proposing very original forms of economic activities with a large societal scope.  In conclusion, this chapter presents a research agenda to better understand the role of queer entrepreneurship in the postcapitalist economy.

This  paper  analyzes  the  agenda  building  of  four  Spanish  alternative  and  cooperative  media: La Marea, El Salto, Crític and 5W. Using content analysis of the cover pages and open-ended questionnaires to the media, we have detected a prevalence of social issues and topics. Expert and primary sources, as opposed to institutional sources, predominate, while  collaborative  practices  with  related  media  for  the  development  and  diffusion  of  content are also common.

"Um das Leitbild der klimaneutralen Stadt zu erreichen, sind Maßnahmen im Wohngebäudebestand, der einen erheblichen Anteil der CO2-Emissionen verursacht, unerlässlich. Untersuchungsgegenstand der qualitativen Befragung von 16 kommunalen und gemeinnützigen Wohnbauträgern in Wien waren die internen Voraussetzungen, unter denen die Anpassungsfähigkeit an die Klimaschutzziele angesichts der Kernaufgabe, bezahlbaren Wohnraum bereitzustellen, optimiert wird, um die Transition zur klimaneutralen Stadt zu erreichen. Die Analyse mittels der Gioia-Methode zeigt, dass das ökologische Problembewusstsein, die Konstitution und die Kommunikation wesentliche interne Treiber adaptiver Kapazitäten sind.

For a holistic heritage tourism development the support of tourism stakeholders is of prime importance and that is essential for the successful execution and long-term sustainable development of a locality. To implement a holistic approach on heritage tourism it is important to identify the key stakeholders for heritage tourism and to synthesise the similarities and dissimilarities between them. In this study, the context is the temple city of Bhubaneswar. The study may be further applied to other heritage tourism destinations. The primary data was collected from various stakeholders through a questionnaire and indepth interviews. The two broad categories of stakeholders that were identified during the study were the local suppliers and the experts of the tourism industry. Criminal activities on tourists remain significant in not just disrupting the tourism industry’s economic success but importantly in constructing an undesirable destination image for tourists who spend large amounts of money to enjoy a trip abroad. A host of studies linking crime with tourists’ travel decisions have shown considerable concern among tourists regarding destinations that are generally prone to criminal activities. A wave of criminal activities in the recent past against tourists in Malawi, thus, remains a possible distracter of tourists’ travel plans to the country. Premised on the assumption that criminal activities targeting tourists can effectively affect their travel plans, this paper seeks to establish the link between crime on tourists and their travel decisions to Malawi. In recent decades, an ethical and responsible tourism has become increasingly important in the context of a general orientation to promote sustainable development models in the world. The recognition of the negative impacts of mass tourism has led to a profound reflection on tourism and its contribution to the development of a territory. The debate has highlighted the importance of promoting a sustainable and responsible tourism development that brings economic, social and environmental benefits to the local community and its members. The importance of promoting an ethic of tourism for the progress of society has been equally emphasized. Values must not be forgotten in leisure time as they contribute to the civil growth of territories and people. Today, even the tourists are more informed and aware, often interested in traveling responsibly and having significant experiences that satisfy social needs. Studies have also highlighted a widespread need for authenticity and a greater sensitivity of consumers to the ethical aspects of a travel. Organizing ethical and responsible tourism activities means to embrace these principles and to consider these tourists' expectations. This paper emphasizes and explores the role of tourism in promoting values that favor the development of territories and visitors (such as those of legality, justice and honesty), as well as its aptitude to foster an economic and social redemption of the local community. To this end, we present two case studies concerning innovative forms of ethical and responsible tourism recently established in Southern Italy in a more favorable institutional and cultural context. These are initiatives characterized by a strong ethical profile, being related to the fight against organized crime in Sicily. The analysis shows how the emergence of ethical tourist practices that exploit opportunities and the potential of a disadvantaged area generate various positive effects (economic, social, cultural and symbolic) on the territory, on the local community and tourists, also thanks to a full enhancement of the educational function of the travelling. The cases highlight that: i) human values have a central role both in the development of the entrepreneurial idea and in the contribution to the personal growth of visitors; ii) tourism can be a tool for promoting social and economic justice in a local community with specific problems.

Professor Emerita (Decolonizing & Women's Literatures in English; Women's and Gender Studies), University of Saskatchewan Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe and key legislators are under fire for inviting and initially defending the invitation of convicted killer and former cabinet minister Colin Thatcher to the throne speech. The invitation was issued by Lyle Stewart, a Saskatchewan Party MLA and legislative secretary to the premier responsible for provincial economic autonomy. Describing Thatcher as a "fine individual," Stewart said: "If anybody has a right to be here, it's Colin Thatcher." Stewart's supposed "fine individual" is the same person who was convicted in 1984 of the first-degree murder of his ex-wife, JoAnn Wilson, in the garage of her Regina home. The pair was in a custody battle when Wilson was severely beaten before being shot in the skull.

The significance of youth engagement in promoting positive societal transformation has gained momentum, with a growing need for innovative solutions that leverage contemporary digital trends. Towards providing the innovative solution, this study assessed the role of the Cooperative from home (CFH) model in promoting Youth Engagement and Social Integration, using Pacesetters CMS Limited in Lagos, Nigeria as a case study. The study is anchored on the social capital theory. A mixed-methods research design was employed, involving document analysis and online survey, targeting the cooperative's 54 members with a response rate of approximately 61.1%. Data obtained were analysed using descriptive statistics including frequency distribution tables, charts and measures of central tendencies. The study findings revealed that a majority of cooperative members (93.9%), preferred online meetings, indicating a strong inclination towards digital platforms. Financially, the cooperative has significantly impacted many of its members, with 39.4% witnessing a significant positive change in their finances. Additionally, 60% of members have formed new social connections due to their cooperative involvement, highlighting the cooperative's role in fostering networking opportunities. The CFH model offers a pioneering approach in leveraging digital platforms, promoting financial well-being and enhancing social networks, thereby acting as a catalyst for youth engagement and social integration in the digital era. It is recommended that cooperatives with youths' composition, particularly those in the upper educational class, adopt and adapt the CFH model, capitalizing on its benefits in bridging traditional and digital engagement avenues to foster community development, enhance member engagement, and achieve socioeconomic objectives.

Le développement de la coopération sociale en Italie a connu un essor considérable et cette dernière peut être analysée selon plusieurs lectures complémentaires. Dans une première partie, l’article rappelle les raisons qui ont soutenu la naissance et l’évolution de ces organisations en partant d’une analyse « traditionnelle » présentant les données générales de la coopération sociale italienne sur la base de la dernière étude présentée par l’Institut national de la statistique (Istat). La deuxième partie décrit succinctement les facteurs de diversité qui sont à l’origine des parcours évolutifs des coopératives sociales. Propósito: El propósito de este artículo es ofrecer una mirada rápida a las posibilidades de la innovación social en el contexto de la cultura solidaria que debe caracterizar a las organizaciones cooperativas o similares. Descripción: Con base en  investigaciones de diferentes autores se definen y relacionan entre sí los conceptos de innovación social y cultura de la solidaridad, desde las perspectivas antropológica, sociológica, económica y cooperativa. Punto de vista: Se exploran posibilidades de cambio en la cultura solidaria de las empresas cooperativas a través de la gestión específica en el campo de la innovación social. Conclusiones: Se concluye que mediante una nueva pedagogía social es posible transformar la cultura solidaria actual en una dinámica experiencia de innovación social.

The Third Sector is a crucial social and economic system at an international level in supplying public services. The Italian law no 155/2006 and the consequent operating decrees have formally rec-ognised the social entrepreneurship, requiring social enterprises (SEs), among other things, to provide specific disclosure in relation to the social impact of their operations. This paper aims to investigate whether there is a relation between the "quality" of SEs' social reporting and financial performance. In relation to this, the research has examined the SEs instituted as limited liabilities companies. The research contributes to the development of this field of studies, concluding that there is no cause-effect relation neither in the hypothesis that the quality of social reports affects the financial performance, neither in the hypothesis that financial performance affects the quality of social reports.***

Esta investigación propone salidas al conflicto armado en Colombia a través del modelo cooperativo y desde la aplicación de la norma, para optimizar las condiciones actuales de la población desmovilizada en este país. Es un trabajo de corte cuantitativo. Emplea el cuestionario como instrumento para la obtención y análisis de información. Este ha sido aplicado a 58 sujetos pertenecientes a las cooperativas que representan los 5 subsectores más importantes que aportan al desarrollo económico de la ciudad de Pereira, Colombia. Dichos sectores son el agroindustrial, transporte, servicios, seguridad y financiero.
