📢 Chemical companies have until 30 September 2026 to submit their 2025 Responsible Care Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). Reporting KPIs is a cornerstone of Responsible Care, helping companies measure progress, drive continuous improvement, and demonstrate their commitment to health, safety and sustainability. Each year, companies committed to Responsible Care report performance data from the previous calendar year. The reporting system is based on anonymised site-level data, submitted either directly by companies through the ICCA Responsible Care KPI Platform or by National Associations on behalf of their members. This approach improves data quality and provides more reliable insights into performance over time. The reporting covers: ✔️ Health & Safety (e.g. fatalities, lost time injuries, process safety events) ✔️ Environment (e.g. greenhouse gas emissions, sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, volatile organic compounds) ✔️ Resource Use (e.g. energy use, water consumption and, where available, water withdrawn) ✔️ Transport incidents ⏰ Deadline: 30 September 2026 👉 Submit your 2025 data via the ICCA Responsible Care KPI Platform or through your national association if it submits data on behalf of companies in your country: https://lnkd.in/enr2yQXz #ResponsibleCare #ChemicalIndustry 

Despite positive elements, the ETS revision proposal risks cutting industry, not emissions | https://lnkd.in/e9xkNEdT Today, the European Commission published its proposal to revise the EU Emissions Trading System. #EUETS Positive aspects like the flattened reduction trajectory and the possibility of using international carbon credits are being fully offset by a drastic conditioning of free allocation. By removing the carbon leakage protection and instead imposing investment requirements coupled with additional bureaucracy, the Commission’s proposal is disconnected from the realities that industry is facing on the ground: no business case nor enabling conditions. At a time when companies are facing high energy costs, fierce global competition and declining investment, Europe needs a framework that strengthens the business case for industrial transformation and climate transition. Key enabling conditions are still missing, including affordable energy, adequate infrastructure, scalable technologies and functioning markets for low-carbon products. Without these conditions in place, this proposal adds pressure on European industry rather than accelerating transformation.

At the 10th EuChemS Chemistry Congress (ECC10) on Industry Day, Marco Pellegrini from the Cefic Innovation team used the analogy of a triathlon to describe the innovation journey: from research and discovery to industrial scale-up and market deployment. Success in sustainable chemistry depends not only on scientific excellence, but on having the right conditions in place: every stage of the journey, from lab to market, must be backed by the right skills, investment and framework conditions. 📢 Europe's objective cannot be to reach lower emissions through industrial decline. | https://lnkd.in/eN_c6aQP In the Financial Times today, Cefic President Markus Kamieth urges that Europe must deliver all: emissions reductions and industrial transformation and competitiveness. Europe cannot afford to mistake deindustrialisation for decarbonisation. "Climate ambition must work in the real economy: Europe must align the pace of ETS tightening with the pace at which the conditions for industrial transformation become available. Otherwise, we risk cutting industry before emissions." Ahead of the European Commission's review of the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS), Markus highlights key realities: ✅ The next phase of decarbonisation requires affordable low-carbon energy, carbon infrastructure, investment certainty and demand for low-carbon products: conditions that are still largely missing today. ✅ A successful ETS revision must reflect these industrial realities and global competition, to ultimately strengthen Europe's competitiveness and create the conditions for industry to invest, innovate and decarbonise in Europe. ✅ Carbon leakage protection remains essential while those conditions are being built. Removing safeguards before viable alternatives exist, risks driving investment and production out of Europe rather than accelerating the transition. ✅Key parameters of the ETS framework must be set right – from the cap trajectory and free allocation to the benchmarks that determine carbon cost exposure. Did you know that the European Responsible Care self-assessment webtool, a multiple-choice questionnaire available in 17 languages, includes a dedicated self-assessment for chemical distributors? 👇 Thanks to the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Cefic and the European Association of Chemical Distributors, a consistent Responsible Care approach is ensured across the European chemical value chain, while addressing the specific needs of chemical producers and distributors🌍. This collaboration is strengthened through the active participation of both organisations in each other's Responsible Care governance bodies, fostering continuous exchange of expertise and best practices. One of the outcomes of this partnership is the inclusion of a dedicated self-assessment questionnaire for distributors within the European Responsible Care self-assessment webtool 🧪. Based on the producer questionnaire but adapted to the specific realities and needs of distributors, it enables a more relevant and meaningful assessment process. 📅 The 2026 cycle of the Responsible Care® self-assessment is now open. How can sustainable chemistry, the bioeconomy, circular economy and biomanufacturing help turn Europe's transition into an industrial opportunity? 🪴 They can. If we move from ambition to scale, said Marco Pellegrini during a dialogue on reindustrialising Europe through sustainable chemistry, hosted by Avantium at the European Parliament. Key priorities include: ✅ Making the bioeconomy a driver of industrial competitiveness and growth ✅ Creating lead markets for sustainable products through demand-side measures, public procurement and targeted incentives ✅ Transforming sustainable biomass, residues and side streams into high-value chemicals and materials ✅ Ensuring the right framework conditions for scale with competitive energy and input costs, access to sustainable feedstocks, support for first-of-a-kind projects, faster permitting, infrastructure and skills The upcoming Biotech Act II must boost bioeconomy.
