This book examines VOX, the first major and electorally successful populist radical right-wing pa... more This book examines VOX, the first major and electorally successful populist radical right-wing party to emerge in Spain since the death of General Franco, and the restoration of parliamentary democracy in the late 1970s.In December 2018, VOX, a new party on the populist radical right, entered the Andalusian regional parliament, and played the role of kingmaker in the ensuing government formation discussions. Since then, under the leadership of Santiago Abascal, VOX has earned political representation in numerous local, regional and national elections. The party attracted more than 3.6 million votes in the November 2019 general election, making VOX the third largest party in the Spanish Congress. In two years, the party has become a key political challenger and an important player in Spanish politics. This book explains the origins of the party, its ideology and relationship with democracy, its appeal with voters, and its similarities with (and differences from) other populist radical right parties in Europe. It draws upon a rich source of domestic as well as cross-national survey data and a systematic analysis of party manifestos which provide a detailed account of the rise of VOX and what its emergence means for Spanish politics.This volume will be of interest to scholars of comparative politics, political parties, voters and elections, Spanish politics, the populist radical right and populism in general

This insurance will apply to all residents of the Netherlands. It will do away with the existing distinction between the health insurance funds and private health insurance. • The general curative care insurance is compulsory for everyone. In addition, an individual may, if he or she wishes, take out insurance for supplementary care. An insured person may change insurers once a year. Nobody can be refused general insurance by an insurer because every insurer has a duty of acceptance for essential care.

This article puts Down’s instrumental voter model (IVM) to a formal test using data of the 2017 C... more This article puts Down’s instrumental voter model (IVM) to a formal test using data of the 2017 Chilean national elections. It aims at two novel exercises in the research in the calculus of voting. Using a brand-new questionnaire with indicators on instrumental and consumption motivations for voting, we reassess the voting equation in Santiago de Chile. Furthermore, we analyse whether instrumental and consumption motivations have distinctive effects for individuals with different socio-demographic characteristics. Our results show that they do: women, younger, lower educated, and unmarried citizens are more responsive to both instrumental and consumption motivations. Moreover, the factors of the IVM travel better to Santiago de Chile than those of the consumption model.

Here, we reverse this approach and analyze whether the electoral cycle affects the protest. With the aid of a new dataset that contains all the demonstrations and marches in Spain from 2000 to 2020 (N = 2,255), we test whether the size of the protest is influenced by the proximity of general elections. As elections offer social movements a political opportunity to air their grievances and make their demands visible to political contenders and the public, we test an electoral protest cycle hypothesis whereby the number of participants in protest events will increase as election day draws nearer. Our results confirm the existence of an electoral protest cycle, even after controlling for potential confounders such as the type of organizers, the claims of the protest, the ideology of the government, and city size.

With the aid of the Making Electoral Democracy Work dataset, we unveil a systematic gender gap whereby women always perceive higher C than men. This gap holds for the whole sample and each of the countries, remains after controlling for a wealth of factors, and is robust to changes in the specification of the models. The gender gap is attenuated only by education and widens with the presence of children and political interest. Important normative questions related to the principle of political equality arise from this gap.

En el plebiscito de 1988, que rechazó la continuidad del dictador, Augusto Pinochet, votó el 89 por ciento de los chilenos mayores de 18 años; pero en las elecciones presidenciales y parlamentarias de 2017 lo hizo solo el 46 por ciento. En este libro, sus autores, expertos en política comparada, comportamiento electoral y técnicas de investigación, analizan las razones de este inusual descenso a lo largo de las tres décadas de la democracia chilena. Hasta 2012, las reglas institucionales alejaron de las urnas a las nuevas cohortes de votantes, con lo que la abstención dependía casi exclusivamente de la edad. Las reformas introducidas por el Congreso Nacional en 2012, que pretendían revertir el descenso de la participación, no consiguieron recuperar a muchos electores que se habían habituado a no votar. En la actualidad, la abstención depende del nivel de estudios, la clase social y los recursos políticos, lo que genera importantes desigualdades en la participación electoral.

Are we looking at crises through polarized lenses? Predicting public assessments of the official early responses to the COVID-19 pandemic in eight countries

Understanding public appraisal of the governments' responses to the COVID-19 pandemic has extensi... more Understanding public appraisal of the governments' responses to the COVID-19 pandemic has extensive implications for the political management of crises that require a substantial amount of civil collaboration. Using open data from a comparative online survey in eight countries (Australia, Germany, Italy, Mexico, Spain, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and the United States), we have run mixed multilevel fixed-effects models for the pooled data and linear regression models for each country to investigate which factors are associated with respondents' evaluations (i.e. assessments of the effectiveness) of their governments' responses to the pandemic. Results show that political orientations, including left-right ideology and interventionist values, are strongly associated with evaluations. Their associations with government evaluations are remarkably similar in all eight countries, indicating that the pattern of influence persists across different contexts. In some countries, personal experiences with the crisis and socio-demographic characteristics also condition the evaluation of governments' responses. Our results show that political ideology serves as a shortcut for the assessment of urgent and controversial measures by governments. This has implications for the ability of governments to elicit citizens' cooperation with the policies confronting the crisis and can impact the effectiveness of government responses to protect people from harm.
