The aim of this paper is to investigate the relationship between AI urbanism and sustainability b... more The aim of this paper is to investigate the relationship between AI urbanism and sustainability by drawing upon some key concepts of Bruno Latour’s philosophy. The idea of a sustainable AI urbanism - often understood as the juxtaposition of smart and eco urbanism - is here critiqued through a reconstruction of the conceptual sources of these two urban paradigms. Some key ideas of smart and eco urbanism are indicated as incompatible and therefore the fusion of these two paradigms is assessed as an unstable basis for shaping sustainable AI urbanism. The concepts in question - modernity, science and nature – are subsequently redefined following Latour’s philosophical perspective, in an attempt to define a different theoretical basis for a sustainable AI urbanism in the Anthropocene. Finally, the principles of a design philosophy shaped by Latour are used to change the design culture that informs AI urbanism towards a more sustainable practice. This paper constructs and promotes a dialogue between the disciplines of philosophy and urban theory with urban design in the conviction that the principles produced by the former and the practices carried out by the latter must start a biunivocal relationship. The paper reveals that in order to change design culture in the field of AI urbanism, it is necessary to rethink some of the key ideas that inform the Western and modern worldview through novel philosophical reflections.

This relationship, which is presented in the academic literature as a new driving force of contemporary urbanism, will be investigated through an interdisciplinary approach that places urban studies and philosophy of technology in dialogue. Thus, the analysis will not focus on the technological development of artificial intelligence systems but on how their application can affect urbanistic thinking and vice versa. The chart that is produced by this method is based on two fundamental axes: time and space. AI urbanism will then be inquired first through key turning points in the history of the relationship between technology and the city (modern urbanism, cybernetics and the smart city paradigm). Secondly, the spatial implications of urban AI will be investigated from the point of view of the concrete applications of this technology to the city (Robots, AVs, Software agents) and their impact on the relationships between different urban actors. Ultimately, this work aims to offer a conceptual tool for understanding some decisive implications of the relationship between AI and urbanism, such as the connection between quantitative and qualitative approaches, the implications related to autonomous technology, the economic-political background of AI urbanism, the material urban impact of AI, and the relationship between AI and other urban intelligences. Understanding these implications will be valuable for future research on AI urbanism oriented toward transforming simple technological development into sustainable urban innovations.

The paper compares design sciences and the philosophy of technology to contribute to the understa... more The paper compares design sciences and the philosophy of technology to contribute to the understanding of the concept of innovation in the digital era. Firstly, this work re- traces an encounter between these two dimensions that took place in Italy in the late 1960s in order to compare it with some contemporary research perspectives. This op- eration investigates the evolution of the connection between humans and machines in design, particularly focusing on the systemic approach. Cybernetic thinking and its de- velopments are the links between the two moments (investigated in the text both from a theoretical point of view and through examples). Secondly, it will be shown that a dif- ferent interpretation of cybernetics can open up the possibility of a new understanding of the relationship between technology and design. A perspective capable of merging a holistic approach and attention to differences and aimed at providing a contribution to the reflection on theoretical paradigms through which technological innovation can be deployed.
Il contributo pone in dialogo le scienze del progetto e la filosofia della tecnologia al fine di riflettere sul concetto di innovazione in era digitale. Con questo obiettivo si affronta la ricostruzione di un incontro decisivo tra queste due dimensioni consolidatosi dalla fine degli anni Sessanta nel contesto italiano confrontandolo con le prospettive di ricerca attuali. Questo confronto indaga una linea evolutiva delle relazioni tra uomo e macchina nell'orizzonte progettuale con una particolare attenzione all'approccio sistemico. Il pensiero cibernetico e i suoi sviluppi costituiscono il nesso tra questi due momenti (anche brevemente esemplificati in contesti operativi) e in un suo ripensamento si individuano delle possibilità di interpretazione differente del rapporto tra tecnologia e progetto, un rapporto capace di coniugare approccio olistico e attenzione alle differenze e finalizzato a contribuire alla riflessione sulla cornice teorica attraverso cui implementare le nuove tecnologie.

Today’s digital society poses the urgency of which could be the suitable theoretical-philosophica... more Today’s digital society poses the urgency of which could be the suitable theoretical-philosophical tools for a consistent reflection on the theme of the widespread diffusion of algorithms in our historical-social world. The approach of the articles of the issue is twofold. One concerns the analysis of the history of the concept of algorithm, and therefore fits into the vein of the history of ideas and at the same time, into the folds of epistemological questions that the algorithm poses within mathematical and information theories, understood in their historical evolution. The other is more directly related to the ethical and political consequences of the extensive application of algorithms in individual and social life. In the first aspect, continuity and discontinuity are shown with respect to references such as Turing or Babbage, but also to the origins of the universal calculus in Leibniz and in Modern Philosophy as well. In the second, the analyses place the topics within the framework of human-machine ethical dilemmas, as well as international guidelines on AI ethics. Here therefore a series of open questions are developed ranging from artificial empathy linked to algorithms or the future role of Machine Learning, up to the critique of ‘platform capitalism’, here with references to the most up-to-date critical thinking, such as Hardt, Zuboff, Ciccarelli, also by re-actualizing Marx’s positions on the replacement of man by the intelligent machines.

Il contributo pone in dialogo le scienze del progetto e la filosofia della tecnologia al fine di riflettere sul concetto di innovazione in era digitale. Con questo obiettivo si affronta la ricostruzione di un incontro decisivo tra queste due dimensioni consolidatosi dalla fine degli anni Sessanta nel contesto italiano confrontandolo con le prospettive di ricerca attuali. Questo confronto indaga una linea evolutiva delle relazioni tra uomo e macchina nell'orizzonte progettuale con una particolare attenzione all'approccio sistemico. Il pensiero cibernetico e i suoi sviluppi costituiscono il nesso tra questi due momenti (anche brevemente esemplificati in contesti operativi) e in un suo ripensamento si individuano delle possibilità di interpretazione differente del rapporto tra tecnologia e progetto, un rapporto capace di coniugare approccio olistico e attenzione alle differenze e finalizzato a contribuire alla riflessione sulla cornice teorica attraverso cui implementare le nuove tecnologie.
