How do you build awareness for childhood hunger? Sometimes, one cereal box at a time. This week, local student athletes, community leaders, and Denver Broncos All-Pro linebacker Nik Bonitto put their skills to the test during the Safeway Grocery Combine. From speed bagging challenges to building towering stacks of cereal boxes, every activity highlighted the importance of ensuring children have access to nutritious meals when school is out or on weekends. Safeway's Nourishing Neighbors, the Bonitto Family Foundation, and Food Bank of the Rockies are teaming up to help keep kids fueled and ready to succeed as we prepare to head back to school. Customers can support the campaign through August 11th by donating at Safeway and Albertsons stores across Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Nebraska. This week, the Seattle Division launched the Food First Project, a multi-year fundraising campaign benefiting the patient families of Seattle Children's and helping address pediatric food insecurity across our communities.   Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba will serve as the inaugural champion for the campaign, raising awareness about the critical connection between nutrition and a child's health, recovery and long-term well-being.   At Seattle Children’s, one in three patient families experience food insecurity, creating additional challenges for children recovering from illness, injury or managing chronic health conditions. The Food First Project is designed to provide immediate, dignified support when needs are identified, helping families access nutritious food without unnecessary barriers.   Funds raised through the Food First Project will support: ✅ Direct family assistance through grocery cards, produce vouchers, and on-site pantries for families facing food insecurity. ✅ Food-as-medicine programs and clinical nutrition initiatives, including specialized meals and equipment for pediatric patients with prescribed dietary restrictions and needs. ✅ Support for families staying in-patient while their children receive treatment at Seattle Children’s. ✅ Long-term advocacy and research focused on the connection between pediatric food security and chronic illnesses and conditions. Safeway is celebrating its 100th anniversary of serving Northern California communities. To mark this milestone, the Safeway Foundation is making donations to four of Northern California’s oldest hunger relief organizations – and the Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano is one of them! Last Friday, Safeway presented us with a $25,000 gift, which will provide food for 50,000 meals. With nearly three dozen locations across Contra Costa and Solano Counties, Safeway plays an important role in our communities. Celebrating an incredible milestone in Fort Collins, Colorado. Tony Espinoza recently marked 50 years with Safeway, and what a legacy he has built. Known for his signature bow tie and warm smile, Tony has spent decades building real connections with customers and associates alike and yes, the bow tie has become just about as iconic as he is. A former teacher, Tony’s impact spans generations. Some of his co-workers have known him since they were babies, and Tony greets many customers by name every time they visit. His philosophy is simple: it is all about the customers and loving what you do. Fifty years in, his passion is as strong as ever and he is not retiring yet! We are not sure what is more impressive, the milestone or the energy. In this photo, Tony holds a case filled with pins from each year of service, a powerful symbol of his dedication to Safeway and the Fort Collins community. What an incredible day in the Mountain West Division at our 2026 Safeway Media and Associate Bagging Challenge in Denver, Colorado.   We were proud to bring together our associates, media partners, and nonprofit organizations for an event that celebrated teamwork, inclusion, and a little friendly competition.   A huge thank you to our Special Olympics Colorado athletes and Safeway associates who showed their skill, speed, and dedication in every heat. June's here...and so is the heat! It's the perfect time for the annual Albertsons Safeway water drive across the Southwest region. Here in Arizona, we've partnered again with our amazing media team at Arizona's Family 3TV CBS5. This week we kickoff the water drive at Safeway in Phoenix with Meteorologist April Warnecke and the Phoenix Fire Department! All this month please consider donating bottled water when you visit any Albertsons Safeway or Vons. Water collected will benefit our friends at the Salvation Army, and support efforts in caring for the unhoused and others in need this hot summer!
