Ask a charge nurse where the downtime box is. They'll know exactly. It's usually a plastic bin with pre-printed forms, a stack of blank labels, and a Sharpie that may or may not still write. That box is the backup plan for when the EMR goes down. And for labels, the plan usually comes down to this: write the patient's name by hand and hope it's still legible on a specimen tube at 3 a.m. Handwriting a label works right up until it doesn't. Two patients with close names. A rushed zero that reads like a six. A wristband that smudges before the blood ever reaches the lab. None of that is rare. It's just what happens when the tool everyone relies on for identification vanishes and the fallback is a marker.
