For many years, learning how to code has been a start stop journey for me. I've spent 80% of my time in the last few days learning how to code. I feel like I'm closer than ever before and this is what I've learnt. This is for anyone in their mid career looking to unlock programming as a skill. 1. You need a strong purpose I've always tried to learn coding because it's a cool skill. This time, I'm driven by the strong purpose of learning how to build MicroSaaS so I can make money. It's making a huge difference. 2. Try to make small ideas work Thanks to AI Agents and Open AI API, I've been bringing small ideas to life that has boosted my confidence. 3. Problem with courses Courses are long. They require commitment and it's incredibly hard to see it through. Buy courses but link it with your idea and consume only what's necessary. No need to finish it. 4. AI Assisted Coding is a double edged sword It's incredibly tempting to let AI do all the coding for you but it won't help you with your cause. You need to learn the building blocks. At the same time, AI can do all the boring stuff for you (generate dummy data, finish syntaxes, check errors) 5. You need long uninterrupted hours I strongly feel anyone can brute force their way into learning how to code today. The problem is no one has that kind of uninterrupted time. 6. Content overload is a real problem It's very easy to get distracted by loads of tutorials and courses out there. Pick something popular and just stick to it. Important to follow along and build something by yourself. 7. Hire someone to teach you Accountability increases both ways when there's money involved. 8. Stick to your decisions or outsource them The biggest time sink is in choosing tech stack. In the beginning, just outsource it. Listen to someone, a friend, a tutor, and just follow along. Don't try to decide by yourself. 9. Pay for tools Pay for Replit. Pay for Cursor. Pay for Claude. All these will make life easy for you. 10. Create small throwaway projects I would've created about 10 projects that are absolutely useless. But learnt loads. Putting this out makes me more accountable. I want to build and launch something soon.

If it's urgent, Slack or Teams is the way to reach me. 🔕 Do Not Disturb: My Silent Ally DND mode is non-negotiable during my focused coding blocks to keep those pings and dings at bay. ⏲️ The Countdown Timer Technique A physical timer sets the boundary for my work sprints, helping me stay on track and reminding me when to take a break. 🤖 AI Tools: My Secret Sauce From scheduling with Motion to note-taking with Notion, AI tools help me stay organized and in the zone. New year, fresh start, big plans... sound familiar? January is when you map out everything you want to learn. Python. AI. AWS. MLOps. The list grows fast. Then February hits. Work gets busy. That course sits at 23% complete. The motivation fades. I've taught enough people to have seen this cycle for years. What separates people who make progress from those who don't? It's not motivation. It's not "doing what you love." It's simpler: focus plus consistency. Focus means clarity about what to work on next. You're not wondering "should I learn this or that?" Decide on something and commit to it, do not jump around. And btw, it doesn't have to be perfect, just know your next step and how it (roughly*) plugs into the one after it. *roughly - because as you learn the first thing, you might change your mind about what should be next. But focus alone isn't enough. The real driver is consistency. Here's the truth you will hate (at first): consistency isn't about big commitments. It's about small ones you actually keep. Thirty minutes a day (even fifteen!) beats "I'll study 4 hours on Saturday" hands down. The people who transform their careers aren't the ones who go hardest. They're the ones who keep showing up. Week after week. A framework that works: 1. Pick one skill for the next 30 days. Not three. One. 2. Set a daily minimum so small it's embarrassing to skip. 15 minutes. 3. Track your streaks. Not breaking the chain is psychologically powerful. The math: 20 minutes a day for 30 days = 10 hours of focused learning. Enough to build real skill. Enough to build a portfolio project. 🚩My Life Working 9-5 as a Data Scientist Is No Joke 📍It’s not easy balancing a full-time job, personal life, and self-care. But one thing I never fail to do is dedicate at least 2 hours every day to learning. It’s honestly the only way to grow and stay ahead in this field. 📍It wasn’t easy at first. There were days when I felt too tired to even open my laptop, but over time, I realized that this daily habit is what helps me continue growing in my career. Now, not every day is about active reading. Some days, I’m doing what I like to call passive learning, like listening to podcasts while doing other tasks. 📌The 2-Hour Rule has become a lifeline for me, and here’s how you can make it work for you too; 1. Break It Up → You don’t have to do the full 2 hours all at once. Some days, I split it, 30 minutes in the morning before work, an hour during lunch or right after work, and the rest before bed. Breaking it up makes it feel less tiring. 2. Passive Learning → When I don’t feel like sitting down and reading an article or tutorial, I switch to passive learning. This means listening to a podcast, YouTube video, or webinar while cooking, commuting, or resting. 3. Create a Daily Routine → You have to be consistent. Just like you have a set time to get ready for work, find a specific time every day dedicated to your learning. For me, it’s early mornings before my day gets busy. That’s when my mind is fresh, and I can focus. But if you're a night owl, find a time that works best for you and stick to it. 4. Mix Up the Learning Styles → One thing that keeps me engaged is switching between different learning methods. Some days, I’ll read articles or research papers, other days I’ll watch a tutorial, and sometimes I’ll practice coding challenges on sites like LeetCode. 5. Set Small, Achievable Goals → If you try to learn everything at once, you may get tired. Set a goal to finish one chapter of a book, one online course module, or just work through a single coding problem. When I started, my goal was simply to read 10 pages of a data science book a day. Now, I can digest larger amounts, but starting small helped me build the habit. 6. Track Your Progress → Nothing keeps you more motivated than seeing how far you’ve come. I use a simple journal to jot down what I’ve learned each day or what projects I’ve worked on. Seeing your progress over time builds confidence and also shows that all those 2-hour sessions are paying off. 7. Prioritize What You Need to Learn → You don’t need to know everything all at once. Focus on skills or knowledge that are relevant to your current job or career path. For example, if you’re working on a project involving Python, dedicate your learning time to mastering Python libraries. Most computer science students burn out because they think progress only happens during massive coding sessions. When your schedule is packed with midterms and lectures, waiting for a perfect block of free time is a trap. Here is the simple rule I use to survive the most chaotic weeks of the semester without quitting my projects. It is called the Non-Zero Day rule. A zero day is when you make absolutely no progress toward your goals. We all have days where we are exhausted, out of time, or simply unmotivated. But giving yourself a complete zero day breaks your consistency. It makes it incredibly easy to slip into inactivity and abandon your projects entirely. A non-zero day means you make even the tiniest amount of progress. It could be writing a single line of code, pushing one minor commit, or brainstorming a project idea for five minutes. During my most intense semesters, I stopped using a chaotic schedule as an excuse to do nothing. I started leveraging the brief fifteen-minute gaps between my classes. I used those moments to outline ideas or fix tiny bugs instead of scrolling on my phone. Here is why this mindset shift changes everything: - It protects your momentum. Doing one small thing signals to your brain that you have not given up on your goals. - It compounds over time. Tiny, imperfect actions taken every single day will always beat inconsistent bursts of massive effort. - It builds extreme accountability. #QuestionsIGetAskedEpisode1 🚀 Two months ago, I started a Monthly AI Updates series, where I share my top highlights from the world of AI Today, I’m kicking off another series: ✨ “Questions I Get Asked” - answering some of the most common questions I get at events, meetups, and forums Episode1: 👉 “How and where do you get the motivation to keep learning and staying up to date?” Here’s my take: I believe motivation is a myth. What truly drives us is 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 Think about it, when you're hungry, you don't need an external force to motivate you to eat. You just do it because the need is clear and present. If a specific need exists, you will be driven, no matter what But what if you're in a stable job and don't feel that immediate 'need' for learning? The need isn't just about the next project, it's about Evolution. It's about making yourself future-proof Let me give you an analogy. If you're on a diet, friends might still tempt you with sweets. But if you have a health condition like diabetes, everyone understands that avoiding sugar isn't optional but it's a necessity. Too often, we only recognize the 'need' after the damage is done. The key is to see it beforehand. If you know you need to be healthy, you'll reduce your sugar intake and exercise for 40 minutes a day to prevent future problems Similarly, if you want to evolve and stay future-proof, you have to invest few minutes a day in upskilling. It doesn't have to be the trendiest new thing, it should be something you're genuinely interested in or have a clear need for I can give you my own example of when I realized this, I studied electronics in undergrad and knew nothing about computer science. But I saw the need a few months before placement season, I spent two hours daily in the library coding (not competitive programming like everyone else, but exploring and building things I enjoyed). At times, this even meant missing out on hanging out with friends or having fun, but I knew why I needed it. That consistency helped me land one of the first internships in my batch Just like I exercise my body, I also exercise my mind for a few minutes every day consistently, without obsessing over results. I still meet friends, take vacations, and enjoy life. Learning just became a natural part of my day because I saw the need. 🔑 So my answer is simple: 𝗗𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗳𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄 This was Episode 1 of the series, thanks for reading! 🙌 But just so you know, I already have a few questions that I get asked often. The human brain builds new neural pathways in as little as a few focused minutes a day. But without structure, feedback, and accountability, those same pathways weaken just as fast as they’re created. This explains why 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗰𝗸 𝗼𝗻 𝗮 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗵𝗮𝗺𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗲𝗹. Inconsistency becomes the biggest killer of progress. You feel “behind,” get discouraged, and fall out of the habit entirely. 𝗠𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘂𝗺 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗲𝗱. Once it drops, everything feels harder... because it is. So, how do we fix this issue? 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗮 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆. Systems create predictable results; motivation does not. 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝟱 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗽𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗱: 1. 𝗦𝗲𝘁 𝗮 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗺𝘂𝗺 𝗱𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗶𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁: even 10 minutes keeps the habit alive. 2. 𝗞𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝗮 𝗻𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗯𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗯𝘆 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗯𝗲𝗱: write down the next task you plan to do - a tutorial, a small feature, fixing some bug, etc. No more guessing what to do next. 3. 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘄𝗶𝗻𝘀: finished lessons, solved bugs, concepts understood. Leave yourself proof of progress. 4. Build projects that matter. Stop asking what to build and figure it out. If you’re constantly asking other people what you should build, you’re missing the point. You got into coding because something about it excited you. So why aren’t you building things that reflect that? Too many developers get stuck in a cycle of copying what others are doing or building projects they think employers want to see, instead of creating something meaningful to them. The truth is, the best projects come from your own interests and problems you care about solving. If you don’t have a real connection to what you’re building, you’re more likely to abandon it or lose motivation. Start with what excites you. If you could build any tool, app, or feature that would make your life easier, what would it be? That’s where you should begin. Don’t just build projects to fill up your GitHub. Build something you actually want to see through to the end, something you’d use or something that could help someone else in your community. Employers aren’t looking for cookie-cutter projects—they want to see your ability to solve problems creatively and effectively. Let your projects reflect your interests and your ability to think independently.

𝗜𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗚𝗶𝘁𝗛𝘂𝗯 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗯𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗱𝗼𝗻'𝘁 𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗴𝗲... 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁'𝘀 𝗼𝗸! When we often think about consistency in technology and when learning to code, GitHub's contribution chart comes to mind. As developers, we've likely dreamed of having the perfect GitHub contribution chart. It would sit on our profile like a badge of honor and show our commitment and dedication to the craft. 𝗕𝘂𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀? You've likely been told at least once to "give it your all" or "give 100%." When we hear this, it's easy to think of the first chart. Showing up at 100%, giving our goals our maximum effort, and doing so consistently day after day. In reality, "100% effort" changes for each of us daily. There are days when I have the bandwidth and mental capacity to work on a side project for hours. Then, there are days when life steps in, and the most I can contribute is a single line of code. In reality, consistency looks more like the other image, where we learn to work with the cards life hands us, making progress on our own terms and at our own pace. Progress is progress—no matter how large or small, and a contribution chart shouldn't be your sole indicator of consistency or progress. Here are a few alternative ways to keep track and keep yourself accountable: 1️⃣ 𝗞𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝗮 𝗰𝗼𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗷𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗹 Journaling is one of the easiest ways to track consistency and progress. Whether you keep a traditional, digital, or audio journal, you can look back and see how much you've learned day by day. 2️⃣ ✨𝗠𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻✨ 𝗮 𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗳𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗼 Use a portfolio to showcase your projects, big and small. It's not just about the final products; it's about documenting your journey and the steps you've taken to build your skills. Every project adds up to something bigger. (Emphasis on maintaining the portfolio 😅) 3️⃣ 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗽𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰 Share your progress on social media or a personal blog. Whether it's daily, weekly, or monthly, building in public helps keep you accountable and lets others cheer you on. Plus, you never know who you might inspire! Keep going, no matter what your version of consistency and progress looks like. Time will come and go regardless of whether we're ready or not. 100 days of small improvements will amount to so much more than waiting for the perfect moment to start or the perfect streak to keep going.
