La collection « Horizons anglophones » publie des recueils et des monographies en anglais et en français dans les domaines des littératures, arts, cultures et sociétés des pays anglophones. Elle se décline en quatre séries : -PoCoPages, anciennement Carnets du Cerpac, a pour vocation d'étudier les littératures, arts et cultures dans la sphère des études postcoloniales. -Politiques et Sociétés vise à observer les évolutions récentes des sociétés contemporaines dans une perspective pluridisciplinaire et comparative. -Present Perfect, créée en 2005, publie des volumes qui ouvrent des perspectives originales sur la littérature et les arts britanniques du e siècle jusqu'à nos jours. -Pro ls américains a publié entre 1991 et 2010 vingt-deux volumes dont chacun était consacré à un écrivain américain. Souhaitant ne plus se limiter à la critique littéraire, elle s'ouvre dorénavant aux autres domaines de la culture américaine (arts, cinéma, musique, etc.). Cette collection, dirigée par des membres d'EMMA (équipe « Études montpelliéraines du monde anglophone »), a pour ambition de réunir des contributions de spécialistes du monde entier et de favoriser le dialogue dans ces domaines de recherche.

Astrologers at Work brings together fourteen scholars to explore the history of astrological practice, focusing on techniques, doctrines, and methods of interpretation across cultures and centuries. Originating from the Tools of the Art conference, organised by the Astra Project in memory of Helena Avelar, this volume highlights astrology’s technical and intellectual dimensions, placing it at the heart of pre-modern science and culture. Through detailed studies of charts, doctrines, and practices, it reveals the central role astrology played in shaping ideas about nature, knowledge, and fate. This work is a vital contribution to the history of science, culture, and ideas.

Este artículo se orienta en sentido inverso al sugerido por Cristina Rivera Garza y refrendado por la mayoría de los textos especializados en su obra: en vez de priorizar la ruptura y la innovación-tan comunes en su producción literaria-, se enfoca en la trabazón que ata su Autobiografía del algodón con una fecunda tradición narrativa en América Latina: aquella empecinada en representar la alteridad sociocultural. Con ayuda de los aportes teóricos del crítico peruano Antonio Cornejo Polar sobre las literaturas heterogéneas, este artículo pretende contribuir al entendimiento de Autobiografía del algodón desde una perspectiva analítica infrecuente en los estudios sobre la obra de la autora tamaulipeca. Mi hipótesis es que, sin menoscabo de los ademanes vanguardistas de esta novela, es posible hallar tensiones que, en distintos niveles, remiten a la dificultad de comprender la imagen de los algodoneros a los que se pretende reivindicar. Así, pese a que Autobiografía del algodón se ofrece como un tránsito de lo personal y familiar a lo comunitario/nacional-en tanto que extiende temporal y territorialmente los efectos de la siembra de algodón-, lo cierto es que Rivera Garza se enfrenta a la dificultad de encarar literariamente un referente cuya filiación sociocultural es disímil a la suya. Concluyo que la fluctuación entre los atributos de la narración homodiegética y la heterodiegética, la exteriorización de las capas que componen el texto y el asomo a una temporalidad diferente son los recursos puestos en juego para tratar de menguar la ajenidad sustantiva frente al mundo aludido.

This article explores the relationship between ideas about kinship and climate politics through the concept of reproductive futurism. Ideas about reproduction and future children define multiple sites of North American engagements with the climate crisis, where the human child comes to represent 'a safe passage into the future' (Sheldon 2016). Even within efforts to address climate change, this framework limits ethical action to solely the human, foreclosing the possibility of new ethical frameworks. I begin with the anti-environmental politics of a white evangelical pro-life orientation, one where concern about abortion often serves to occlude care about the environment and the climate crisis. I then show how reproductive and environmental politics are often united in secular responses to the climate crisis through a focus on the figure of imagined future children. Included in this is a call for scholars of religion to explore the possibilities for convergences of secularism and religion.

Robert Putnam argues that civil society --citizen activity in organizations --contributes to successful governance and democracy, which may be very important in the peaceful reconstruction of Central America. Putnam does not, however, specify in detail how civil society might shape government performance. We spell out how citizens' participation in groups might impinge upon the state through both political participation and democratic norms. We consider Putnam's category of "social capital" and add to it new "political capital" variables. We first explore the relationships among two civil society measures (formal group activism and community self help activism) and social and political capital, employing survey data from six Central American countries. We then investigate the effects of civil society and social and political capital upon levels of democracy in Central America. We find that while higher levels of formal group membership and several political capital measures are associated with higher levels of democracy, social capital does not have the relationship Putnam predicts. We conclude that political rather than social capital links formal group activism to democracy in Central America.

En un contexto marcado por la movilidad y los itinerarios vitales entre distintos países, las escrituras del yo hispanoamericanas de las últimas décadas reflejan la experiencia migratoria por diferentes causas: desde el exilio por la represión política de las dictaduras latinoamericanas, hasta la migración por motivos económicos y familiares. Pese a la multiplicidad de los factores mencionados, lo innegable radica en la influencia de las migraciones sobre la identidad de los autores, así como en la representación del yo en los universos diegéticos de sus obras. En tal sentido, el artículo se propone describir la conformación del yo en dos novelas hispanoamericanas contemporáneas: El país bajo mi piel. Memorias de amor y guerra (Gioconda Belli) y El cuerpo en que nací (Guadalupe Nettel). El análisis prosigue una metodología derivada de las propuestas de Jacques Derrida en el libro El animal que luego estoy si(gui)endo, donde se plantea la hipótesis de la hominización (o construcción de lo humano) como un proceso de reconstrucción del itinerario vital a través del rastreo de las huellas propias. Estos recorridos o escri-rutas pueden adoptar disímiles estructuras, en dependencia de interés del narrador; cuando los hitos del itinerario estén determinados por lugares físicos, habrá de considerarse entonces como rutas topográficas.

La presente investigación adopta un enfoque cualitativo y hermenéutico para explorar las dinámicas de resistencia en el movimiento feminista "Vai ter gorda na praia" en Salvador, Brasil. Centrándose en la representación y visibilidad de los cuerpos gordos, principalmente de mujeres negras, el estudio busca comprender las estrategias utilizadas por el movimiento para desafiar las normas estéticas y de género.
El marco teórico, que abarca desde la crítica de la normatividad estética hasta la interseccionalidad y la teoría crítica de la raza, proporciona un contexto integral para el análisis. La metodología se diseña como un proceso iterativo que combina entrevistas semiestructuradas con miembros del movimiento y análisis de archivos fotográficos utilizando el software Atlas.Ti. La selección intencional de participantes busca representar diversas experiencias dentro del movimiento, y el análisis de imágenes se enfoca en descifrar las estrategias visuales de resistencia implementadas por el grupo.
La investigación aspira a desentrañar las complejidades de las políticas del cuerpo y la barbificación en el contexto de Salvador, ofreciendo una comprensión profunda de las prácticas subversivas y la potencia feminista del movimiento. Este trabajo contribuye al cuerpo de conocimientos académicos sobre la resistencia feminista y proporciona perspectivas valiosas para la formulación de políticas inclusivas y la promoción de la diversidad corporal en la sociedad contemporánea.

How much difference does good advocacy make in Supreme Court cases? Perhaps not as much as we lawyers would like to think. The Supreme Court's majority and dissenting opinions frequently brief the case better than the parties did. With nine Justices of widely varying philosophies and more than thirty law clerks, the Court often compensates for advocates' failures in argued cases. The same cannot be said about the earliest stages of Supreme Court review. When an appeal or petition for certiorari is first presented to the Court, good advocacy can make all the difference, and mistakes are frequently fatal. The reason is not hard to find. Sheer volume prevents the Justices, and even their law clerks, from going very far behind the lawyers' papers at this stage. Every week the Court receives between seventy-five and eighty new requests for review-a handful of appeals and a raft of petitions for certiorari.' The unending flow has forced the Justices to treat petitions with dispatch. Eight of the nine Justices delegate the initial screening of cases to law clerks, who prepare memos summarizing the case and recommending whether it should be heard. Two Justices have their own law clerks review every case. In order to meet their responsibilities in argued cases, which may range from preparing bench memos to providing first drafts of opinions, these law clerks must move through the cert petitions rapidly, they dispose of the average petition in half an hour or less. Six Justices have "pooled" their law clerks. The petitions are divided among the six chambers, and each petition is assigned to a single law clerk, whose memorandum is circulated to all six chambers. Dijitalleşmeyle birlikte sanat formları kadar sanata yüklenen anlamlar da dönüşüme uğramıştır. Sanatın üretim ve tüketim biçimleri değişmiş; sanat, yeni ifade yolları ve söylem stratejileri edinmiştir. Bu dönüşüm, özellikle feminist sanatın görsel ve kavramsal çerçevesinde belirginleşmektedir. Feminist sanat, geleneksel estetik normları ve görsel kodları sorgulayan temaları, materyalleri, araçları ve kompozisyonel tercihleri ön plana çıkararak alternatif bir görsel/estetik dil üretmiş; temsil sistemlerine karşı eleştirel bir duruş sergilemiştir. Bu çalışmada feminist sanatın dijital çağda geçirdiği dönüşümü, multimedya sanatçısı Arvida Byström'ün fotoğraf pratiği üzerinden görsel ve kuramsal bir analizle incelemektedir. Feminist sanat, 1970'lerdeki ikinci dalga feminizme dayansa da günümüzde ataerkil temsil sistemlerini, estetik normları ve görünürlük politikalarını sorgulayan dinamik ve kesişimsel bir söyleme evrilmiştir. Bu bağlamda Byström'ün dijital estetik, beden politikaları ve feminist teori kesişimindeki üretimi, çağdaş feminist sanatçıların dijital platformları nasıl kullandığını anlamak için güçlü bir örnek sunmaktadır. Çalışmanın önemi, feminist sanat tarihi, görsel iletişim ve dijital medya çalışmalarını birleştiren disiplinlerarası yaklaşımında yatmaktadır. Byström'ün hiper-feminen estetiği, kışkırtıcı kompozisyonları ve Instagram gibi sosyal medya araçlarını stratejik biçimde kullanması, feminist sanatın geleneksel mecraların ötesine geçerek daha katılımcı ve erişilebilir hale geldiğini; dijital ağlar üzerinden görsel bir direniş biçimi yarattığını göstermektedir. Yöntem olarak Gillian Rose'un görsel içerik analizi modeli kullanılmış; üretim süreci, görselin kendisi ve izleyici tepkisi olmak üzere üç boyutta değerlendirme yapılmıştır. Seçilen görseller; beden olumlama, regl görünürlüğü, toplumsal cinsiyet performativitesi ve güzellik normlarının çözümlemesi gibi feminist temalar açısından incelenmiştir. Donna Haraway, Laura Mulvey, Amelia Jones ve Kimberlé Crenshaw gibi kuramcıların görüşleri analizlere kuramsal zemin sağlamıştır. Bulgular, Byström'ün görsel dilinin kasıtlı biçimde rahatsız edici olduğunu; abartılı feminenlik, grotesk imgeler ve tabu temalarla egemen estetik anlayışları sarstığını ortaya koymaktadır. Sanatçının dijital araçları kullanarak kadın bedenini direniş, özneleşme ve çoğulluk alanı olarak yeniden tanımladığı görülmektedir.

The world was falling apart before the very eyes of seventeenthcentury Englishmen. The specter of disintegration and atomization transfixed the vision of poets and political philosophers alike. John Donne felt that Nature herself was crumbling to bits under the doubting gaze of the "new Philosophy." And freely men confesse that this world's spent, When in the Planets, and the Firmament They seeke so many new; they see that this Is crumbled out againe to his Atomis. 'Tis all in pieces, all cohaerence gone.1 Some years later, Sir Robert Filmer feared a more troubling, if less metaphysical, incoherence in parliamentary politics. The people's representatives, he charged, "are constrained to epitomize and subepitomize themselves so long, till at last they crumble away into the atoms of monarchy, which is next to anarchy. " 2 Filmer sought order and wholeness in, among other places, the dictates of Scripture. But Thomas Hobbes espied disintegration and atomization there, too, es pecially when Holy Writ was interpreted by the enemies of peace and truth. Seeking their own advantage, they obscured everything by "casting atomes of Scripture, as dust before mens eyes. " 3 What would put the world back together again? Hobbes cer tainly had some ideas regarding Scripture-not to mention politics

Autofiction transposes the postmodern idea that all language is fiction into autobiographical writing. A transgenerational group of socially conscious women writers in Spain has embraced a model of autofiction rooted in the primacy of the social and the materiality of bodies over metaliterary speculation. Marta Sanz, Paula Bonet, and Sara Torres challenge the view of reality as mere text or simulacrum, presenting autofictions that foreground the social responsibility of the author and urge readers to engage with their historical present. Central to their narratives is an acknowledgment of vulnerability as a shared condition, as conceptualized by Judith Butler and Audre Lorde, not only as a site of resistance but also as a means of empowerment. These writers critique neoliberal and patriarchal norms, advocating for social change through heightened awareness and solidarity among women, thereby re-politicizing Spain’s literary scene. By adopting a centrifugal rather than centripetal approach to autofiction, they move from individual experiences to collective social consciousness, fostering new ethical imaginations.

Connell’in hegemonik erkeklik kuramı ve Judith Butler’ın toplumsal cinsiyetin tanınma rejimlerine dair yaklaşımı doğrultusunda yapılan analiz, erkekliğin bedensel semboller aracılığıyla nasıl inşa edildiğini ve bu sembollerin yokluğu ya da inkârı durumunda öznenin kimliğinin nasıl çözüldüğünü edebi temsil düzleminde incelemektedir. Bu bağlamda çalışma,
erkekliğin sabit bir öz değil, kırılgan ve toplumsal olarak onay bekleyen bir performans olduğunu ortaya koymaktadır.

This study centers on the significance, uses and changes of the corset in the Western culture and literature through a study of body politics, culture and fashion. The emplacement of corsetry in the West as an undergarment goes back to 1600s. Research shows that the study of corsetry is important as the corset has been a permanent, pervasive, popular object preferred mostly by women from different classes, sometimes by men and even children since the Middle Ages. Moreover, it is important to notice how the corset has gone beyond its use value and has become first a symbol of rank and elegance, then of female oppression and victimization and finally a symbol of sexual empowerment and feminine rebellion in contemporary time. Popular critics of the field state that the corset today is far beyond its earlier restrictive usages and negative meanings as the garment today has become a favored item in fashion industry and preferred by celebrity icons all around the world. The corset at present is an outerwear, art object and ideological construct. So, what makes the corset so popular and everlasting? The study on corsetry yields to a critique of Western culture from socio-political perspective as well as through body politics and gender studies. In that respect, this work aims to explore how corsetry in past and contemporary time exists as an essential part of patriarchal ideology, influencing social and literary landscapes and borrowing from the beauty aesthetics, thus creating the idealized feminine of each century.

Resumo: O ensaio apresenta a perspectiva antropofágica como concepção dos processos criativos, que parte de uma apropriação crítica e transformadora das componentes da criação. Considera-se o pensamento de Oswald de Andrade elaborado como filosofia antropofágica e sua reelaboração por Suely Rolnik, em termos de compreensão da produção de subjetividade na criação. É examinada a singularidade dessa perspectiva a partir de múltiplas referências em distintos campos de criação, como a filosofia e as linguagens artísticas da literatura e do teatro. A filosofia antropofágica é apresentada em suas características epistemológicas, éticas e estéticas. As linguagens artísticas são consideradas em seus procedimentos antropofágicos. Finaliza com a discussão do caráter descolonizador do processo criativo antropofágico. A criação pensada como processo, considerada em seu devir produtivo, pode ser vista numa perspectiva antropofágica, de apropriação de impulsos criadores, componentes do processo criativo, em termos de uma incorporação dessa multiplicidade constitutiva da criação, resultante de um processo de singularização. As múltiplas componentes do processo criativo que são reunidas, combinadas, agenciadas, para compor uma obra, é a multiplicidade que é incorporada à criação como aspectos constitutivos do acontecimento da obra. Seja na criação artística, filosófica, científica, ou em outro campo da atividade criadora humana, podemos considerar o caráter poiético, produtivo, do processo criativo. In this paper I argue five points.
1. Plato secretly patterned the plot structure of The Republic on Euripides’ final tragic play, The Bacchae, thereby inverting the surface meaning.
2. Nietzsche secretly alluded to that plot parallel in The Birth of Tragedy, and interpreted it as Plato’s doubly-disguised allusion to the Vedic myth of Krishna and the gopīs: the cowherd girls of Vṛndāvana with whom Krishna dances as He plays the flute.
3. In Attempt at a Self-Criticism, Nietzsche admits that The Birth of Tragedy is “beriddled” and that Dionysus is a mask for a still “unknown God” whose identity must be “discovered and dug up by philologists.” The “unknown God” is a Biblical reference to Christ, while European Sanskrit philologists had been debating for over a century about a parallel between the tragic birth stories of Krishna and Christ. I argue that Nietzsche used Dionysus as a mask for Krishna, understood as the original God of Christ and Plato.
4. Nietzsche openly says that the “historical exemplification” of “tragic culture” is “Indian (Brahmanic) culture” (BT 18), and predicts that when the rational spirit of science reaches its boundary at the limits of space and time, it will recoil in horror back into the tragic myth—Indian (Brahmanic) myth)—it initially destroyed (BT 15).
5. I argue that Nietzsche’s prediction came true in 1965, when Penrose and Hawking forced academia to accept the reality of gravitational singularities, after which A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda brought the dancing and singing Gauḍīya Vaiṣṇava school of Vedānta—the Hare Krishnas—from India to America. Since then, holographic string theory as completed the parallel with Vedic-Platonic cosmology.

The idea of the monster has functioned within various Western discourses, always carrying with it elements of difference, deviance, exclusion, and marginality irrespective of spatiotemporal differences. The monstrous often signified a liminal state of existence, remaining well within the western dualistic logic that operates through a series of binaries such as natural/unnatural, human/animal, self/other, normal/deviant. Within the discourses surrounding body and illness, sexual transgression and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) such as AIDS, syphilis, and herpes, among others, are often portrayed as monstrous. Ken Dahl's autopathography Monsters (2009) is a harrowing account of his experience of dealing with herpes infection and the personal, psychological and socio-cultural impact of encountering his own vulnerabilities as an STD-infected person. In close reading Dahl's memoir, this article aims to investigate the author's use of the monster metaphor and abject art to depict the stigma he faced as a carrier of an incurable and contagious disease. Drawing theoretical insights from Sigmund Freud, Jacques Lacan, and Julia Kristeva among others, the essay also seeks to examine the social mechanisms and the discourses surrounding body and illness which operate in stigmatizing and othering an STD patient as monstrous.

L YING ON THE US border, where President Donald Trump is promising a new wall, the state of Chihuahua has a frightening record for journalist security. At the end of 2016, radio reporter Jesús Adrián Rodríguez Samaniego was shot dead outside his home. Then Miroslava Breach Velducea, who worked for one of Mexico's best-known newspapers La Journada, was murdered in March 2017. But earlier this year when Index on Censorship interviewed Armando Cabada Alvídrez, the mayor of the largest city in Chihuahua, he was feeling positive about journalist safety. "We have no information that alarms us now. Just imagine, I come from that profession. If I had any information that suggested that there is a risk for journalists, I would summon them and warn them. I would look after them," he said at his office in Ciudad Juárez. Prior to becoming mayor in October, Cabada was the best known TV anchor in the city and now argues the situation has improved. Cabada added: "There is a closeness to journalists here. If journalists were to provide any information that suggested a risk for them, we would deal with it immediately.

For over two decades, the Mexican theater group Lagartijas Tiradas al Sol has been creating a unique form of theater that deftly articulates, constructs, deconstructs, and reconstructs the concept of reality and truth. The Latin American theater scene, particularly in Mexico, is currently engaged in a process of interweaving documents, his- tory, and memory to establish a legitimate space for the exploration of how truth can be constructed through fiction. This chapter draws from the theories of Jürgen Habermas and Michel Foucault to explore how "the real" is approached in Mexican documentary theater. It uses the play Tijuana, a recent work by Lagartijas Tiradas al Sol, as an example..

Retrospective voting models assume that offering more information to voters about their incumbents' performance strengthens electoral accountability. However, it is unclear whether incumbent corruption information translates into higher political participation and increased support for challengers. We provide experimental evidence that such information not only decreases incumbent party support in local elections in Mexico, but also decreases voter turnout and support for the challenger party, as well as erodes partisan attachments. While information clearly is necessary to improve accountability, corruption information is not sufficient because voters may respond to it by withdrawing from the political process. We conclude with a discussion of the implications of our findings for studies of voting behavior.

In dem Beitrag wird in Bezugnahme auf FOUCAULT ( , 2004a der zentralen Frage nachgegangen, welche gouvernementale Funktion der Sport und die Sportwissenschaft in der Gesundheitsbildung einnehmen. Zudem wird untersucht, welche Selbst-und Fremdzuschreibungen in den Diskursen von wem wie vorgenommen und (re-) konstruiert werden. In dem Beitrag werden die Ziele, Inhalte und Methoden der gesundheitsbildenden, politischen Maßnahmen und politischen Kampagnen sowie der sportwissenschaftlichen, insbesondere sportpädagogischen Publikationen in Deutschland der Jahre 2003 bis 2010 diskursanalytisch untersucht. In using the conic telescope crown for anterior teeth, it is necessary for the inner crown to have a larger taper and chamfered margin on the labial surface in order to keep sufficient space for facing material. Although there are a lot of reports on the relationship between the retention of the outer crown and the taper of the inner crown, the effect of the chamfer depth on the retention has been unknown. In this study, the retention of the outer crown was examined in relation to the chamfer depth or knife-edge diameter of the inner crown. The results were as follows: 1. The retention of the outer crown was significantly larger with the chamfer type inner crown than with the knife-edge type. 2. The retention increased with increase in the chamfer depth.

Vulnerabilidad, virtud y cuidado es una obra que propone una reflexión profunda y transformadora sobre el papel central de la fragilidad humana en la vida moral. El libro culmina en la propuesta de una virtud clave, la justa generosidad, que permite dar sin reservas y recibir con dignidad, superando los límites del emotivismo y del orden dominante moderno. En suma, este texto invita a redescubrir en nuestra contingencia corporal y relacional la fuente más profunda de nuestra libertad y de nuestra vocación al cuidado mutuo.

Not all citizens’ voices are heard with equal strength in the political chorus. Based on studies of policy feedback, we suggest that engaging underrepresented citizens in the production of public services (i.e., making them “coproducers”) increases their political voice. We use a field experiment to test the effect of involving ethnic minorities in the education of their children on their propensity to directly voice their preferences with the education policy through government citizen surveys and their tendency to vote in elections. Among these normally underrepresented citizens, coproduction increased their propensity to voice their preferences to politicians through citizen surveys but not their tendency to vote. The effect on voicing in government citizen surveys tends to be larger among nonvoters. The results indicate how policies involving underrepresented citizens can raise the voices of people who would not otherwise be heard.

"Transitologists" in the 1990s conceded that the new democracies of post-Cold War Africa could traverse different directions and that structural factors such as neopatrimonialism, ethnic cleavages, military power, and external meddling could explain why. However, these factors alone do not fully explain the variations observed today among "weak" democracies. Beyond the question of why some survive while others collapse, this essay addresses a more nuanced puzzle: What explains the divergent outcomes of the post-Cold War democratic transitions in sub-Saharan Africa? While countries like Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso reverted to autocracy, others like Ghana, South Africa, and Namibia moved toward democratic consolidation, whereas Nigeria, Benin, Togo, and Zambia have remained in a state of weak but stable democracy. Through historical comparative case study analysis, I argue that party system institutionalization, foreign technical assistance, and the dynamics of populism and polarization (IVs) play important, underappreciated roles in shaping regime outcomes (DV). Overall, this analysis demonstrates how domestic institutional capacity interacts with external support to determine whether weak democracies consolidate, endure, or collapse, thereby advancing our knowledge of regime outcomes in sub-Saharan Africa today.
