As a photojournalist, writer and producer of television documentaries, Ben Bohane has spent the past 12 years posting stories about life on the islands of Melanesia to the Western media—illuminating the struggles and the spirit worlds behind the news. Melanesia is as close to Australia as a 150km cruise from the tip of Cape York across the Torres Strait to Papua New Guinea, connecting Australasia to the rest of Oceania and Asia. Until recently, though, these islands have seemed distantly removed from Australia and New Zealand’s notion of its international community.

In the coastal village of Abepura in West Papua, one of Australia and the Pacific’s great underground artists was recently laid to rest. His name was Mark Worth, although he went by a variety of nicknames, including Kurtz, Captain Kino, Captain Kaos and, affectionately, ‘Worthy’. Worth, who died of pneumonia at 45, was one of Australia’s finest frontier cameramen. He aspired to the pantheon of great Australian documentary filmmakers and conflict cameramen – Frank Hurley, Damien Parer and Neil Davis – and his contemporary peers included Dennis O’Rourke, Bob Connelly, Mark Davis and David Brill. As a photojournalist who has lived and journeyed through the ‘Black Islands’, Vanuatu resident Ben Bohane was drawn to them because they still seemed like mythical and remote places in an increasingly familiar world, while many of their conflicts went largely unreported. There were family connections too. So beginning in 1994, he ran a naval blockade to cover the war in Bougainville and soon found others too, wars the rest of the world had conveniently forgotten: in East Timor, West Papua as well as Bougainville. Then there were riots in New Caledonia, civil war in the Solomon Islands and coups in Fiji. This paper performs a literature review of research papers published by the Brazilian Academy of Information Management, with the purpose of analyzing how much the main design science (DS) research principles are applied and how they are put in practice. The research sample was extracted from 257 papers published in this area of study, from the annals of the EnANPAD, between 2008 and 2012. The expressed interest of the researchers in DS was noticed, taking into account the fact that there are research papers published related to the development of new artifacts. Such papers, however, did not address central aspects of DS, such as the association of an artifact with problems in the business environment, substantiating the use of an artifact by means of tests with variables associated with the problem.

Due to the nature of competition law, which deals with business behaviour affecting the economy, it is not surprising that it is economic and not legal theories which have shaped the ‘modern’ approach. The dominant theoretical stream in competition law is welfare economics, informed by the neoliberal thinking of the Chicago and Post-Chicago Schools. In order to determine the anti-competitiveness of certain conduct, welfare economics applies a consequentialist approach by determining economic harm; anticompetitive harm occurs if total or consumer welfare and efficiency decrease.

This paper deals with the development a finite element of laminated planar gantry based on the positional formulation whose kinematics enables independent turns and variation of slab thickness in an extension of the Layerwise theory. It is intended, therefore, to obtain an element capable of performing non-linear geometric analyzes in structures of plane porticoes composed of laminated composite materials with thin or thick cross-section. Thus, the results of strain distributions and stresses are expected to be more realistic along the thickness and interfaces, aiming at future modelling of the lamination failure process by delamination or sliding. One of the most critical issues for English teachers in Australia concerns teaching Asian-Australian identities. This paper will take a literary approach to this topic, and use Only the Heart by Brian Caswell and David Phu An Chiem (1997), and Dreaming Australia by Steve Tolbert (2004) as pedagogic tools. These texts are starting points for discussing the many intersections between Asian and Australian identities. The emphasis of this paper is on perceptions of Asian-Australian identities amongst young people, and how these can be used by English teachers to create worthwhile and exciting learning environments. The theoretical approach that will be elaborated is based upon a poststructural reading of textual practice, so that students relate bookstudy to identity-construction. Despite many efforts for making data about scholarly publications available on the Web of Data, lots of information about academic conferences is still contained in (at best) free-text format. When available in a structured format, these data would provide an essential input for the decisions researchers, libraries, publishers, funding and evaluation bodies take every day. In this paper we present a vision for having such data available as Linked Open Data (LOD), and we argue that this is only possible -and for the mutual benefit -in cooperation between researchers and publishers. We also present a pilot project aimed at publishing data about 8,500 computer science conferences as LOD.

The article is a response to criticism published by Rajko Bukvić in Ekonomski vidici in the paper 'On quality and visibility of social and economic sciences of Serbia', more precisely in the section entitled Scandals directed by CEON/CEES: Does chaos rule in our (economic) periodic publishing? In this section, the author directly accuses CEON/CEES for producing chaos in social sciences in Serbia by "excluding" many journals from its database called the Serbian Citation Index (SCIndeks). According to the author, CEON/CEES, after the termination of the financial support by the Serbian ministry responsible for science, blackmailed journal publishers by accepting for indexation only those willing to pay a fee for content maintenance. Centre for Evaluation in Education and Science (CEON/CEES) was created in 2002 as a Belgradebased autonomous research and development agency and S&T observatory. Intrauterine growth restriction remains befundling problem in obstetrics, dependent on multifactorial, diverse, intrinsic fetal conditions as well as many maternal and environmental factors. Ultrasonography with color doppler assesmenent remains the only tool for follow-up and diagnosis. Multidisciplinary apporach for assesment, mangement, prevention is imperative. Selective IUGR in monochorionic twins needs attention for optimum perinatal outcome. Future intensive research is desired to establish preventive, diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for IUGR, perhaps affecting the health of future generations.

Аналіз земельних ресурсів сільськогосподарських підприємств сьогодні є важливим аспектом земельної реформи і господарського процесу кожного агропідприємства. Він охоплює комплексний набір об'єктів та завдань, розкриття та виконання яких потребують застосування комплексного набору показників відповідно до етапів роботи і загальних рекомендацій. Одним із основних завдань аналізу земельних ресурсів на сьогодні є формування систем автоматизованого пошуку, збору та обробки інформації, а також створення механізмів автоматичного отримання готової аналітичної інформації відповідно до потреб, посад і ситуацій. Методи дослідження методики аналізу земельних ресурсів ґрунтуються на комплексному аналізі та синтезі, формальній та діалектичній логіці. Розроблено і обґрунтовано цілісний методичний апарат, який спроможний забезпечити реалізацію зазначених у ньому завдань -підвищення рівня обґрунтованості рішень, збереження та покращення параметрів, дотримання принципів сталості, сформовано методичну базу аналізу та запропоновано власну комплексну систему показників землекористування, визначено чітку послідовність дій в межах аналізу, що дозволить більш повно і ґрунтовно вивчити об'єкт дослідження. Перспективи подальших досліджень аналізу земельних ресурсів сільськогосподарського призначення полягають у розробці пропозицій щодо розширення комплексної системи показників аналізу земель сільськогосподарського призначення. A clear majority of Americans are concerned about environmental threats to public health and do not want to weaken antipollution regulations. The strongest supporters for maintaining environmental regulations are affluent mainstream White suburban populations who are thriving economically, but support is also strong in every other major segment of the population. Overt attempts to weaken the basic regulations are unlikely, barring an obvious economic downturn that would cause a large proportion of the public to consider loosening standards in the belief that such changes would increase the number of available jobs. Given this context, environmental health was and will continue to be a core topic in the Journal. We will emphasize the nexus of environmental health and policy by publishing research, exemplary public health practice, and the views of key decision makers.

Courageux par son ambition de brasser la pensée marocaine contemporaine dans toute la diversité et hétérogénéité qui la caractérise, à la confluence de réflexions à la fois universalistes et à forte résonnance locale. Impressionnant par la taille de l’ouvrage (830 pages) et le nombre d’auteurs, 33 au total issus de divers horizons, impliqués dans cette vaste entreprise de réflexion, la première du genre au Maroc, et au Maghreb en général.

The recent Productivity Commission inquiry into Broadcasting in Australia has acknowledged the important place of Indigenous production in the national mediascape. The inquiry's draft report recommended changes to the Broadcasting Services Act which take into account some aspects of the kind of cultural production going on now in the Indigenous media sector across Australia. However, while there have been some significant changes suggested, acknowledgment of the broader cultural importance of the sector and its potential remain unaddressed. Acknowledgment of the special place of Indigenous languages and cultures in the Broadcasting Services Act, for example, remains elusive to national policy-makers.

While the first section of the book focuses on the battles over regulation of the initially scarce spectrum is informative, it is the second and largest part of the book dealing with programmes and the characters that brought them to life which really shines. It is the innumerable stories that Griffen-Foley has woven cleverly into her narrative that the real cultural worth of commercial radio is apparent. 

Writing is key in anthropology, as one of its main modes of communication. Teaching, research, publications, and outreach all build on, or consist of, writing. This entry traces how anthropological writing styles have evolved over time according to changing politics in the discipline. It starts out in the late nineteenth century, showing how early writings in the discipline aimed to be objective. While writing anthropology in a literary mode goes a long way back, it was not until the 1970s that writing began to be collectively acknowledged as a craft to be cultivated in the discipline. This led to a boom of experimental ethnographic writing from the 1980s, as part of the 'writing culture' debate. The idea behind experimental narratives was that they might convey social life more accurately than conventional academic writing. Today, literary production and culture continue to be a source of inspiration for anthropologists, as well as a topic of study. Anthropological writing ranges from creative nonfiction to memoirs, journalism, and travel writing. Writing in such non-academic genres can be a way to make anthropological approaches and findings more widely known, and can inspire academic writing to become more accessible. Recent developments in anthropological writings include collaborative text production with interlocutors and artists. However, the tendency for experimentation is also held in check, as publishing in academic publication formats and featuring in citation indices is crucial for anthropologists' careers. Still, as our writing moves increasingly online, there is a growth of flexible formats for publishing, including online books, essays on current affairs, and conversations in journals.

La publicación de El campo literario revisitado de Gisèle Sapiro hacia fines del año académico 2025 fue la ocasión para ofrecer una clase abierta vía ZOOM. Si bien de la conversación participó parte del equipo de traductorxs, correctorxs y editorxs involucradxs en este libro colectivo disponible en acceso abierto gracias a los esfuerzos de dos universidades públicas (la Universidad Nacional del Litoral y la Universidad de Buenos Aires), su punto nodal estuvo dado por las presentaciones de María Belén Riveiro, Fernanda Beigel y de Gisèle Sapiro; por un lado, editamos y fijamos una versión de aquel intercambio oral y, por el otro, tradujimos el texto de Sapiro. This thesis addresses the phenomenon of the recent success of foreign-born mangaka in the Japanese comic industry. One in a long line of foreigners who have written about Japan, Swedish mangaka Åsa Ekström is a representative example whose success has been facilitated by a set of circumstances brought on by the influence of the international manga market, socio-economic policies stemming from the unique challenges presented by Japan's declining birthrate and rapidly aging population, and changes in the landscape of the Japanese publishing industry. Drawing upon themes and excerpts from Ekström's popular comic essay series, Nordic Girl Åsa discovers the Mysteries of Japan (Hokuō joshi Ōsa ga mitsuketa Nihon no fushigi 北欧女子オー サが見つけた日本の不思議), this thesis explores those facets of her skilled background in conjunction with the aforementioned circumstances that have contributed to her success, including the influence of internationalization, effects of an increasingly digitized publishing industry, and proliferation of vocational manga schools encouraging overseas student enrollment. By doing so, this thesis attempts to answer the question of whether foreign participation in what has been traditionally considered a closed market is reflective of a globalizing Japan, and determine the future of the market for comic essays by foreign-born mangaka.

For decades Sudan, like most of Sub-Saharan African countries, has been facing profound engineering education issues, namely: poor funding, outdated curricula, ineffective teaching and learning methods, inadequate human capacity, poor research/publishing condition, inappropriate facilities, inadequate educational technology and ICT environment, weak university/industry relationship, lack of academic freedom, and missing of quality control and accreditation measures. The paper discussed these issues, and proposed solutions such as redesign of flexible curriculum, adopting learner-centered approach, and developing hiring structure that focuses on recruiting and retaining qualified educators, with the goal of graduating a high rate of qualified engineers, ready for the 21st century.

The Global Infectious Disease Ethics (GLIDE) Collaborative is launching a new Wellcome Open Research (WOR) Gateway, and we as the leaders of GLIDE hope to encourage submissions to this timely and necessary new platform for publishing open access peer-reviewed articles focusing on this area.

Le degré élevé de standardisation que demandent les publications en sciences exactes justifie l'imposition d'une langue unique, en l'occurrence l'anglais, comme lingua franca de la communication. La traduction en anglais des travaux scientifiques en vue de leur publication dans les revues internationales à comité de lecture représente ainsi une activité importante, y compris en France, où les compétences en anglais des chercheurs ne permettent pas toujours à ceux-ci de rédiger leur travaux directement dans cette langue, ou alors approximativement, nécessitant l'intervention d'un traducteur pour corriger leurs productions. La pression de la standardisation, conjuguée à l'utilisation internationale et « hors sol » de l'anglais par les chercheurs, puis aux pratiques d'édition, a favorisé l'émergence d'un nouveau « technolecte désincarné » auquel doit s'adapter le traducteur-réviseur sous peine de décevoir l'attente multiple des auteurs, éditeurs, relecteurs et utilisateurs. Ce contexte, celui de destinataires spécialisés et largement non anglophones, amène le traducteur professionnel à développer des stratégies d'évitement afin de contenter sa clientèle sans se faire violence.

The aim of this study was to assess knowledge about preparing meals of parents of preschool children from Nowy Sacz and the vicinity. The questionnaires on the principles of preparing meals were filled in by parents of 121 six-year-old children. Statistical analysis was carried out by means of the SPSS 12.0 PL for Windows computer programme. The studied population was divided according to children's gender Children's gender had statistically significant influence on parents' answers to two questions: concerning the loss of B-complex vitamins and vitamin C while rinsing chopped foodstuffs. A higher percentage of the parents of boys answered correctly to both questions compared to the parents of girls. Also to the remaining questions, statistically not significant, the parents of boys gave more correct answers. It is necessary to draw parents' attention to the importance of the principles of preparing meals. Educational programmes, aimed at improving parents 'knowledge in this field, should be worked out.

Minsky's theory of financial instability helps clarify how Marxist theory can explain the highly financialised capitalism of today, and the crisis which started in 2008. The advanced economies currently have high realised profits in the productive sector and lagging rates of investment. Shareholder pressures encourage corporate strategies which focus on stock-market ratings and M&A operations, less on productive investment. Tax evasion and the build-up of reserve cash piles by corporations have contributed to a global surplus of what Marx called loanable capital. This surplus has been augmented by the increasing inequality of personal wealth ownership and, in the international economy by, large current-account surpluses. The results include: huge profits for the financial system; low interest rates; recurrent boom and bust in asset markets; the fuelling of huge increases in household and government debt; and the combination of instability and stagnation which results from an excess supply of loanable capital.

This paper presents the preliminary results from examining how universities of technology can better prepare graduates in engineering in both the EU and Australia to meet industry requirements in a globalised environment. How will the new European qualifications frameworks and Diploma supplements contribute to meeting these requirements? How can mobility of students be increased and what is inhibiting mobility? This comparative study of course design, combined with feedback from employers and students examines these questions with students, staff and the professional community. The results show both mobility barriers from students and staff perspectives. The paper discusses potential opportunities to overcome barriers to mobility and enhance the opportunities for engineering students to have an international experience.

Background: Due to competitiveness and academic benefits, most dental professionals feel an urgent need to increase their publications. Hence, we explored the attitude of students and faculty members toward scientific publications through a questionnaire. Materials and Methods: A questionnaire consisting of 13 questions was sent by e-mails and posting the printed copies to dental postgraduate (PG) students (second and third year) and faculty members (n = 500 each). The returned completed questionnaires were analyzed. Results: About 37% of dental PG faculty and 35.6% PG students responded to the questionnaire, with overall response of 72.6%. Among the PG faculty, professors (P) had more scientific publications, followed by senior lecturers (SL) and readers (R). The publications as first or corresponding author were less among both faculty and PG students while co-authorship was more among PG students compared to faculty members. Awareness about the term "plagiarism" was overall high and relatively highest among R, followed by SL, P and PG students. The percentage of publications in fee charging journals was more among PG students than faculty members and self-funding for publication was observed in 86.4% of PG students and 94-100% among faculty members. Conclusion: About 72.6% of dental professionals were involved in publishing of their research work and the number of publications increased steadily with an increase in their academic experience. All the dental professionals concurred publications as the criteria for academic excellence.

This article outlines the imperative for strengths-based research to counter deficit perceptions and perspectives of Black males in contemporary discussions of their school achievement in the United States. The importance of young men of color in shaping research agendas, practice, and public policy is argued followed by a brief overview of the papers featured in the special issue “Erasing the Deficits: My Brother's Keeper and Contemporary Perspectives on Black Male School Achievement.”

This brief presents the most significant recommendations based on a review of key findings from research presented in this special issue. The authors offer what they believe to be the most important considerations of what works for improving Black male school achievement in the domains of research, practice, and policy.

This article explores whether some scientists have now actually been developing a type of science apt to be published as a piece of news, yet lacking a relevant scientific interest. Possibly, behind this behaviour there may be the present working culture, in which scientists live under the pressure of the dictatorship of the Science Citation Index (SCI) of the reference journals. This hypothesis is supported by a study demonstrating that there is a direct relation between publishing scientific results in the press and a subsequent increase in the SCI index. Many cases are here described, selected among the papers published in Nature that -according to experts -have a media interest rather than a scientific one. Furthermore, the case of the Dolly sheep cloning is studied as a paradigm for a situation in which media coverage actually destroyed the research group. The present scientific context hardly allows to establish who is a good scientist producing quality science. Given the lack of more sophisticated systems -or of the test of time of the future History of Science -, scientists judge one another on the basis of their publications and, most of all, of the Science Citation Index (SCI), as well as the number of citations of any work or scientist. The problem is that this citations system may be distorted if scientific studies are the subject of media news. This circumstance was demonstrated in 1991 in a phenomenal study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, whose authors (Phillips et al.) analysed the papers published in that journal between 1978 and 1979 and compared those having subsequently appeared in The New York Times with those that had not. 1 According to their reports, the studies published in the US newspaper had been cited by 72.8 per cent more in the year following to their publication than those not appearing on that newspaper. The most important aspect is that a significant difference in citations persisted at least for ten years subsequent to the publication of the scientific results in the paper. And everybody knows what citations and the impact index are to the academic career of a scientist. The goal of this paper is to establish whether this event can drive a scientist to select their research area on the basis of the likely media coverage, instead of the opportunity to know nature better. The study by Phillips included a very well devised verification system to prove the assumptionjustifiable from a journalistic viewpoint -that The New York Times was only providing information on the most significant scientific results, which would obviously have received more citations in any case. But Phillips and his collaborators were lucky, or had devised a very good strategy to illustrate their methodology. Indeed, during the period under study, The New York Times had to face a three-month strike (1978) of its staff. However, during that strike, the newspaper produced some issues to be kept in a "record edition", although none of them was distributed to the public. The authors of the work analysed that "record edition" to check what news The New York Times considered worth of coverage, even though the paper was not being published. The study demonstrated that the papers deserving a highlight, yet not published because of the strike, had not seen an increase in the quantity of citations in the following years. Thus, it was demonstrated that a scientific paper mentioned in the quality press is cited by 78.2 per cent more, irrespective of the quality of the research. The objective of this study was to reduce energy demand in the mechanical pulp refining process by substituting second stage high consistency (HC) refining with two stages of optimised low consistency (LC) refining. Primary refining of Spruce-Pine-Fir wood chip mix was carried out using the Advanced Thermo-Mechanical Pulp (ATMP) refining process employing mechanical chip pre-treatment in the RT Pressafiner and Fiberizer prior to highintensity refining with the addition of 3.1% bisulphite. A portion of the primary pulp was subjected to a second stage HC refining, and the other part subjected to two stages of LC refining. The results indicate that the two stages of optimised secondary LC refining reduced the gross refining energy by approximately 300 kWh/odt compared to second stage HC refining. The target tensile index of 40 Nm/g required approximately 1450 kWh/odt of gross HC refining energy, and only 1150 kWh/odt using primary HC followed by secondary LC refining. Compared to HC-refined pulps, at a tensile index of 40 Nm/g, the LC-refined pulps had a similar freeness, light scattering coefficient and density, but lower TEA, stretch, tear index and average fibre length. The different pulp properties are believed to originate from the different fibre length distributions resulting from these two refining methods.

Seven patients underwent the Fontan operation, eight patients had a biventricular repair, and five patients remained with palliative shunts. All patients required re-interventions in adulthood. Tricuspid valve (TV) (n = 5), pulmonary valve (PV)/ conduit (n = 6), and mitral valve (n = 2) replacements were the most frequent re-intervention in the biventricular repair subset. Atrial arrhythmias were present in 80% of the total cohort, the highest rate among Fontan repairs (n = 7) and biventricular repairs (n = 7). Ventricular arrhythmias occurred in 15% of the cohort. Although limited in number, the adult PA/IVS patients in this series continue to have high rates of morbidity and mortality, with arrhythmias and need for re-operations as the major causes. Patients with biventricular repairs had the highest re-intervention rate in adulthood. While this subset of patients might not be representative of all adult PA/IVS survivors, continued follow-up at centers with expertise in adult congenital cardiology is recommended for all patients [3].
