𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐡𝐲𝐝𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐞𝐧 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐩𝐬 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐚 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞-𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐝 𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐮𝐫𝐬 Hymonic uses ammonia as a hydrogen carrier. Wherever hydrogen is needed, the ammonia is fed into a cracker: a compact reactor that separates it into high-purity hydrogen and nitrogen. A great solution for industrial, transport and maritime companies seeking to decarbonise in locations where hydrogen supply or storage is challenging. Until 2025, the startup was part of Siemens Energy Ventures. But when Hymonic became an independent spin-off, it lost the community it had been part of. It then found a new home at climate tech hub SubZero in the Merwe Vierhavens (M4H) area in Rotterdam. COO and co-founder Priya Gajadhar: “We were looking for a place with other founders focusing on hardware, somewhere to exchange ideas, share knowledge and access the right industry networks. Rotterdam and Delft offer several good options, but we chose SubZero because of our focus on hardware and chemical processes. We immediately felt at home.” SubZero is part of Platform Zero, where startups, scale-ups and industrial partners work on clean and circular technologies for the port and industry. With high-quality testing infrastructure for power-to-X technologies, the Fieldlab Industrial Electrification (FLIE) pilot hall at SubZero is an ideal location for startups like Hymonic. Iris Bergshoeff-Klingeman, Innovation Lead Climate & Energy Platform Zero: “Rotterdam is an important place for many companies to prove themselves. SubZero supports startups from the pilot stage to the first semi-industrial production phase. After that, we hope to keep thinking along with them as they continue to scale.” Priya and Iris shared their perspectives on the Zuid-Holland hydrogen ecosystem during the Building Ecosystem Pitches at the World Hydrogen Summit & Exhibition 2026.
