Dr. Ademola, Olaitan Idowu is a Nigerian scholar and educationist specializing in Curriculum Studies, Educational Technology, and Social Studies Education. He holds a Ph.D. and Master’s degree in Curriculum Studies from the University of Abuja, and a B.Ed. in Social Studies Education from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, following an NCE from the Federal College of Education, Zaria.He is currently a Lecturer in the Department of Curriculum and Educational Technology at Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education, Owerri, where he teaches both NCE and undergraduate programmes. Often the performance of a material is governed by how its surface interacts with its environment... more Often the performance of a material is governed by how its surface interacts with its environment, and this frequently depends upon the structure and composition of that surface at the molecular scale. This basic fact has driven the development of surface analytical instrumentation for decades. An ideal tool would allow the researcher to know the surface composition of their sample with molecular resolution and in a realistic environment, and even to monitor these molecular processes directly as the sample interacts with its environment. While the search for the perfect instrument is still ongoing, in 1982 this effort was significantly enhanced by the invention of the scanning tunneling microscope (STM), allowing the direct spatial imaging of conductive surfaces with atomic resolution under a wide range of environments. This invention sparked the imagination of scientists and engineers worldwide, and the ensuing years witnessed the development of a regular alphabet soup of different techniques that are broadly known as scanning probe microscopy (SPM). Of these techniques, none is so pervasive and broadly applicable as atomic force microscopy (AFM). Briefly, AFM operates by placing a sharp tip in such close proximity to a sample that their interaction can be measured. Unlike traditional spectroscopic surface analytical instruments, the high resolution afforded to AFM is offset by the remarkably low data content, which is largely mechanical and physical in nature with little chemical or compositional information. Initial efforts to enhance the data content of AFM focused on increasing the number of modes. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) has revolutionized surface characterization by allowing the researcher to examine the molecular structure of virtually any sample under virtually any environmental condition. The AFM is used to produce information about surface topography, elasticity, friction, adhesion, charge density, magnetic structure, or even longrange effects. Compared to traditional spectroscopic surface analytical tools, the AFM suffers from a remarkably low data content. Chemical modification of the tip incorporates chemical information within the measurements. In this way, researchers have obtained compositional maps of heterogeneous materials, measured single-molecule interaction forces between biopolymers, and even differentiated some nuances of cell membranes.

Their acceptability demands information on the technical properties of their wood. The aim of this study was to investigate the mechanical properties of Ficus vallis-choudae to determine its potential for timber. Three mature Ficus vallis-choudae trees were selected and harvested from a free forest area in Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria. Samples were collected from the base (10%), middle (50%), and top (90%) along the sampling heights of each tree, which was further partitioned into innerwood, centrewood, and outerwood across the sampling radial position. The approach is capable of differentiating between inorganic As(III) and As(V). The principle is based on generating AsH3 from the sample in a confined chamber by borohydride reduction at controlled pH, sparging the chamber to drive the AsH3 to a small reflective cell located atop a photomultiplier tube, allowing it to react with ozone generated from ambient air, and measuring the intense chemiluminescence that results. Arsine generation and removal from solution results in isolation from the sample matrix, avoiding the pitfalls encountered in some solution-based analysis techniques. The differential determination of As(III) and As(V) is based on the different pH dependence of the reducibility of these species to AsH3. At pH < or =1, both As(III) and As(V) are quantitatively converted to arsine in the presence of NaBH4. At a pH of 4-5, only As(III) is converted to arsine. In the present form, the limit of detection (S/N = 3) is 0.05 microg/L As at pH < or =1 and 0.09 microg/L As(III) at pH approximately 4-5 for a 3-mL sample. The analyzer is intrinsically automated and requires 4 min per determination. It is also possible to determine As(III) first at pH 4.5 and then determine the remaining As in a sequential manner; this requires 6 min. There are no significant practical interferences. A new borohydride solution formulation permits month-long reagent stability.

Liquid Chromatographic Arsenic Speciation with Gas-Phase Chemiluminescence Detection

We present a newly developed gas-phase chemiluminescence (CL) detection method for the separation... more We present a newly developed gas-phase chemiluminescence (CL) detection method for the separation and quantification of inorganic and organic arsenic species. Arsenite, arsenate, dimethylarsinic acid (DMA), and monomethylarsonic acid (MMA) were separated by anion exchange using carbonate-bicarbonate and NaOH eluents with step-gradient elution. The separated species were passed through a UV photooxidation reactor which decomposed the organic species and converted them to inorganic As(V). Subsequent on-line hydride generation with acid and sodium borohydride produces AsH3 and H2, which are separated from the liquid in a gas-liquid separator. The produced AsH3, driven by H2, reacts with ozone in a small reflective cell located atop a photomultiplier tube, resulting in intense CL. In the present form, the limits of detection (LODs, signal-to-noise = 3), based on peak height, for arsenite, arsenate, MMA, and DMA are 0.4, 0.2, 0.5, and 0.3 microg/L, respectively, for a 100 microL injected sample. This analyzer demonstrates the robustness of the CL detection system for arsenic and provides an affordable alternative to atomic spectrometry for use as a detector after chromatographic speciation. We found no significant practical interferences.

Simple random sampling technique was adopted to select 300 female workers from ministries, teaching service commission, tertiary institutions as well as private establishments in Kwara State. The “Preparedness and Attitude of Female Workers Toward Retirement Questionnaire” (PAFWTRQ) was administered to the respondents to collect relevant data. The t-test and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) statistics were used to test five generated null hypotheses. The findings showed that there were no significant differences between and among respondents' preparation and attitude towards retirement based on religious affiliation, marital status, academic qualification and job type. Significant differences were, however, found among the female workers based on age group. Based on the findings, some recommendations were made. Amongst them are: professional counsellors in Nigeria should step up efforts at establishing their own counselling clinics where they would be able to provide assistance to serving workers on preparedness for retirement and counsellors should effectively utilize their general counselling skills through the different non governmental organizations (NGOs), women organizations and groups in enlightenment campaigns on preparedness for retirement. By examining current educational practices and policies, the study identifies key challenges and opportunities in implementing an inclusive curriculum at the upper basic education level. The study adopted a descriptive survey design with a sample size of one Hundred (100) Upper Basic teachers in Federal Capital Territory Abuja. The research highlights effective strategies for integrating students of varying abilities, backgrounds, and socioeconomic statuses into mainstream education. The findings emphasize the importance of culturally responsive teaching, community involvement, and government support in fostering an inclusive educational environment for upper-basic education students. Moreover, the paper discusses the role of teacher training and professional development in equipping educators with the skills necessary to support diverse learners. The results underscore the need for a holistic, collaborative approach to curriculum development that aligns with the broader goals of sustainable development. Ultimately, this study provides valuable insights and practical recommendations for policymakers, educators, and stakeholders in Abuja and beyond, aiming to bridge educational gaps and create a more inclusive, equitable, and sustainable educational system for Upper-basic education.

Data were generated through the secondary sources and Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) used to fit the models. The adequacy of the fitted models was tested using Augmented Dickey Fuller tool. The study noted that Nigeria is abundantly endowed with the basic inputs into cement manufactured with the exception of gypsum which occurs in thin-vein layers. The study revealed that the demand for cement in Nigeria is derived from the demand for residential and non-residential construction and that residential housing is by far the largest segment of cement consumption. This study investigated the relative strengths of students’ perception for some key factors assoc... more This study investigated the relative strengths of students’ perception for some key factors associated with learning in four Lagos State-based tertiary institutions, using conjoint analysis approach. Data were generated from primary sources through the administration of Conjoint Analysis questionnaire of profiles (factor levels) which were ranked by the student-respondents. The analysis produced utility scores and relative importance results which were determinants of comparative strengths of factors. The study revealed that ‘program me extension’ plays the most important role in most of the tertiary institutions while quality of lecturing plays the least important role. In a world increasingly threatened by civic erosion and democratic disengagement, the role of tea... more In a world increasingly threatened by civic erosion and democratic disengagement, the role of teachers as catalysts for responsible citizenship has taken center stage. This study explores the perceptions of secondary school teachers in Nigeria on the effectiveness of Civic Education in fostering citizenship development among students. Grounded in a survey research design, data were collected from a purposively selected sample of 200 senior secondary school teachers across diverse educational districts. To ensure reliability and internal consistency, a pilot study was conducted using Cronbach's Alpha, confirming the robustness of the research instrument. The findings reveal a strong consensus among teachers that Civic Education holds transformative potential for shaping active, informed, and responsible citizens. However, recurring challenges such as inadequate instructional materials, limited teacher training, and curricular constraints were identified as barriers to effective delivery. Despite these limitations, teachers perceive themselves not merely as conveyors of content but as pivotal agents in nurturing democratic values, critical thinking, and national consciousness among Nigeria's youth. This study elevates the voices of educators who operate at the intersection of pedagogy and nation-building, emphasizing the urgent need for systemic reforms, pedagogical innovation, and sustained investment in Civic Education. In amplifying the perspectives of those on the frontlines of educational transformation, this research contributes to a global dialogue on citizenship education and underscores the vital role of teachers in anchoring democratic resilience in an increasingly polarized world.
