CGIAR's Food Frontiers & Security Program will focus on three food systems of growing importance: fragile and conflict-affected food systems, urban and peri-urban food systems, and island food systems. These systems are highly vulnerable to shocks and crises, marked by large youth populations, isolation with limited and resource-scarce food value chains, significant food and water insecurity, widespread malnutrition, and severe environmental threats and degradation. There is weak governance across these systems, and new solutions and investments must be catalyzed to support the world's most vulnerable communities.

Across fragile and conflict-affected settings, displaced populations and host communities face growing pressures from climate change, environmental degradation, and increasing competition over natural resources. The Nature-positive and Circular Bioeconomy Solutions for Livelihoods and Peacebuilding (C-PEACE) initiative, led by International Water Management Institute (IWMI) under the CGIAR Food Frontiers and Security Program, is working with partners across Kenya, Ethiopia, and Ghana to co-design circular livelihood models that promote resilience, environmental restoration, and social cohesion. By positioning refugees and host communities as partners in restoring natural resources—not simply beneficiaries of aid—C-PEACE demonstrates how science, innovation, and inclusive partnerships can reduce resource-based tensions while advancing sustainable food, water, and energy systems. In the Solomon Islands, 35 secondary school students gained hands-on experience in organic farming, composting, nursery management, and nutrition through training at the WorldFish Nusatupe Innovation Hub. More than learning how to grow food, students explored the connection between sustainable agriculture, healthy diets, and resilient island food systems. By combining science, innovation, and locally available resources, they discovered practical solutions that can strengthen household food security, reduce waste, and improve community resilience. The training was delivered through the capacity-building component of the Aquatic Food Innovation Hub for Island Food Systems project, a three-year initiative supported by the Asian Development Bank. under CGIAR Food Frontiers and Security Program. Most African countries depend on imported fuel, which leaves them exposed to shocks they cannot control, such as the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. The same chokepoints carry imported fertilizer, compounding the dependence. A few countries are starting to address their vulnerability and exposure directly rather than just cushioning its effects, but not every country follows these examples. International Water Management Institute (IWMI) , CGIAR Food Frontiers and Security in collaboration with the GHANA REFUGEE BOARD and UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency is convening a two-day co-design workshop under the CIRCLAB PoD (AoW1) to develop the Circular Bioeconomy Integration Framework and Roadmap for the Ghana Refugee Agribusiness and Sustainability Programme (GRASP). 📅 Date: 14–15 July 2026 🕘 Time: 09:00–13:00 GMT 📍 Venue: Fiesta Royale Hotel, Accra, Ghana The workshop brings together representatives from government ministries and agencies, development partners and national research organisations to jointly shape a shared vision for integrating circular bioeconomy principles into GRASP. Through a series of interactive co-design sessions, participants will identify priority agrifood value chains, map circular opportunities, prioritise strategic interventions, develop implementation pathways and identify the policies, partnerships and investments needed to accelerate implementation. On 19 June 2026, CGIAR Food Frontiers and Security in partnership with International Potato Center (CIP) convened an Inception and Co-creation Workshop on Urban Nutrition and Food Environment Interventions in Nairobi, bringing together representatives from the Nairobi City County and CGIAR research team to co-design solutions for healthier urban diets. The workshop provided a platform to align the proposed intervention package with county priorities and jointly develop an implementation roadmap for June–November 2026. Participants identified key barriers to healthy diets and prioritized actions to improve nutrition outcomes for vulnerable groups, including children under two years, pregnant and lactating women, adolescents, and low-income households. 🆕 #Blog: How African economies are absorbing the 2026 oil price shock (so far). Oil prices began climbing in January 2026 amid the escalating U.S. and Israeli confrontation with Iran, then spiked when war broke out on February 28 and Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz. Brent crude rose by roughly 70% within weeks. By June, a fragile ceasefire had brought prices part of the way back down. Whether the calm holds depends on further diplomatic negotiations between the warring parties.
