    What if the secret to sharper decisions lies not in your strategy, but in your surroundings? We spend much of our leadership energy on strategy and systems. Yet the physical environment we work in...the light, the noise and the temperature shapes our ability to think clearly and make good decisions. Researchers note that exposure to light not only governs vision but also influences alertness, cognition and mood. Bright light reduces sleepiness and improves neuro behavioural performance. Conversely, high levels of noise, particularly irrelevant speech, diminish cognitive performance more than temperature. In one study, researchers observed optimal cognitive performance at a moderate temperature with noise levels around 55 dB. I saw this play out when we refreshed the back office of a restaurant I was overseeing. The team had been working under harsh fluorescent lights and constant background chatter from the kitchen. People were tired, mistakes crept in and tensions rose. After reading about the effects of the environment, we replaced the lighting with softer, brighter bulbs, opened blinds to let natural light in and set up a quiet area away from the busiest machines. Within days, the mood lifted. Staff reported feeling more alert and less stressed. For leaders looking to harness the environment, here are a few considerations: 1. Let in the light. Where possible, increase exposure to daylight or use bright lighting. Evidence suggests that this helps maintain alertness and reduces sleepiness. 2. Control noise. Background chatter and irrelevant speech can impair concentration. Aim for moderate noise levels and quiet zones if your space allows. 3. Mind the temperature. Studies have found that cognitive performance peaks at moderate temperatures and falls when rooms are too cold or too hot. 4. Observe and adjust. Walk through your workspace at different times. Notice where people seem energised or drained. By managing light, sound and comfort, we give ourselves and our teams a better platform to perform.   • The Tiny Adjustment That Expands Your Presence Instantly Have you ever walked into a meeting with every intention of making your presence felt, only to find yourself slowly retreating inward? I often see this with my clients. They want to appear composed and confident, yet their body tells a different story. Shoulders begin to curl forward. The chest feels tight. Hands stay folded or fidget nervously. To others, it looks like unease. Inside, it feels like anxiety, tension, and even a sense of being invisible. In those moments, the instinct is usually to fight back with self-talk: “Don’t be nervous.” “Be confident.” But thoughts rarely obey commands. The harder you try to silence anxiety, the louder it becomes. There is another way. Instead of trying to wrestle with the mind, you can shift your body first. Research on embodied cognition reveals that posture has a direct impact on mood, emotion, and even the way we perceive and process experiences. When the body opens and aligns, the nervous system interprets that as a sign of safety and authority. From there, confidence begins to rise naturally. One alignment I often share is simple yet powerful: ears over heart, heart over pelvis. Not stiff, not exaggerated, just gently stacked. From this core alignment, consider adding these subtle yet effective cues: - Soften your knees: Locked knees signal tension. - Relax your jaw: Unclenching the jaw invites calm and helps release tension from the face and voice. - Let your shoulders drop: Instead of pulling them up or holding them rigid. - Open the chest gently: Without puffing up, broaden your collarbones to signal openness and confidence. - Lengthen the spine: This gives a sense of dignity without strain. - Ground through your feet: It brings stability and awareness to the present moment. - Rest the hands naturally: Unclasp them, place them loosely on the table or lap. This signals calm and reduces fidgeting. - Breathe into the belly: Diaphragmatic breathing calms the nervous system and supports vocal strength. The moment you bring awareness to this structure, something changes. Presence expands, not through effort, but through alignment. This quiet shift carries weight in a meeting or conversation. Words land differently. Attention comes more easily. And you feel less like you’re forcing confidence, and more like you’re standing in it. The lesson is simple: confidence does not always begin with thought. It can start with posture. When the body supports you, the mind follows. So next time you notice yourself shrinking at the table, resist the urge to battle with your inner dialogue. Instead, return to your body.     In a first real-world study (PMID: 41402450) of its kind, regular daytime light exposure improved cognitive performance and alertness Researchers tracked 58 healthy adults wearing wrist-based light sensors for 7 consecutive days, while attention, reaction speed, and sleepiness were measured during normal daily life, not in a laboratory. The evidence showed that greater daytime light exposure was associated with faster reaction times (~30–60 ms), improved sustained attention, and lower subjective sleepiness, even among individuals with standard 9–5 schedules and no circadian disorders. The mechanism appears to involve melanopsin-mediated retinal signaling. A complementary lab arm demonstrated that brighter light enhances the activity of intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells, which project to brain regions governing alertness and attentional control. Stronger daytime activation of these pathways is thought to increase circadian amplitude and stabilize wake-promoting neural systems. Importantly, these effects emerged without artificial light manipulation, caffeine, or sleep deprivation, indicating that ordinary variations in daily daylight exposure are sufficient to alter cognitive performance. Prioritizing daylight exposure (particularly in the morning and early afternoon) supports faster attention and reduced daytime sleepiness. Simple strategies include outdoor time, working near windows, and avoiding prolonged dim indoor environments during daylight hours.

    Bad posture? You might be fixing the wrong problem! If you’ve been stretching your hip flexors or just “standing up straighter” without results, you might not be addressing what’s actually going on. 💡 What’s happening? There are two different problems that look similar but aren’t: Anterior pelvic tilt = your pelvis rotates forward (angle change)Anterior shift = your body shifts forward in space (position change)Tilt is a local coordination issue, while shift is a global stability strategy chosen by your brain 🔥 Why this matters APT is about how muscles interact — overactive hip flexors (TFL, rectus femoris) shut down the glutes, creating that forward tilt. Anterior shift is different — your brain has decided that forward is your most stable position and keeps you there all day. 👉 Takeaway: APT = localized muscle timing problemAnterior shift = global balance strategy problem 🛠️ Exercises to retrain posture 1.) Tilt retraining (APT) Move in and out of the tilted position to relearn control. This retrains how hip muscles interact to hold you in a better position. 2.) Leg swings Swing forward/back to restore balance between quads, hamstrings, and hip muscles. 3.) Shift + rotate (anterior shift) Shift forward/back, side to side, and add rotation to teach your brain new positions and break the “stuck” stability pattern. 4.) Hip hinge (divers) Strengthen your posterior chain so your body can actually support a better position. These exercises are your training ground—but the real fix is applying it daily. You have to consciously correct your posture throughout the day so your brain relearns where “normal” should be.     Measuring the light in your office may not be top of your agenda, but it could matter more than you think. Our daily light exposure significantly impacts health, wellbeing, & performance as light influences our: • Circadian rhythms • Sleep • Neuroendocrine • Cognitive functions However, our light exposure patterns often aren’t optimised for our overall health. So, what can we do? A recent study offers recommendations for light exposure to support physiology, sleep, & wakefulness in healthy adults (PMID: 35298459). ☀️DAYTIME INDOORS: The recommended minimum is 250 lux. If available, daylight should be used. If additional electric lighting is required, it should mimic natural light. 🕯️EVENING: Starting at least 3 hours before bedtime, the recommended maximum is 10 lux with warmer (red/orange) colours. 🌒 NIGHT-TIME FOR SLEEP: Your sleep environment should be as dark as possible. The recommended maximum is 1 lux. If you need to get up and do something, the recommended maximum is 10 lux. If you’re interested in measuring light intensity in your environment, you can download a light-meter app for your smartphone. You can also pick up a dedicated light meter relatively cheaply. Posture creates discipline: Upright, steady posture improves focus and reduces restlessness. 3. Controlled attention: Avoiding unnecessary visual distractions strengthens concentration. 4.     Instead of a stimulant - try some bright light! As a scientist I have often wondered: 👉🏽 WHY is bright light ☀️ so powerful for performance and mood? Did you know that bright light can improve your: 1️⃣ Cognitive processing speed by 20%? 2️⃣ Mood by 38%? I really enjoyed this talk by Gilles Vandewalle yesterday at the European Sleep Research Society conference in Seville. Gilles studies how bright light impacts the brain. ☀️ ➡️ 🧠 Investigating regional responses in subcortical brain areas, which are buried deep in our “reptilian brain”: 👉🏽 The locus coeruleus and the hypothalamus Plus he also looks at the amygdala and thalamus, higher up. It turns out that these areas modulate their activity based on bright light. Special “non-image forming” (NIF) effects, made possible by special receptors in our retina. This could explain our improved executive functioning and improved mood. 💡 But while scientists explore specific brain regions and networks, you can already use this to your advantage! For example 👇🏽 😴 If you’re feeling a bit of an afternoon slump today but need to get work done: 🌤️ Get 10 minutes of bright light exposure (preferably outside).     ☀️ Before your next important task, step into the light. One of the studies I'm most excited about because of its real #translational potential. A study rigorously led by Daniella Mahfoud. Can just 30 minutes of bright, daylight-like light before a demanding task change our performance and how we think? In our randomised crossover study, participants spent 30 minutes walking in a room illuminated with either bright, daylight-like full-spectrum light or standard indoor lighting before completing a multimodal cognitive battery. All cognitive testing was then performed under identical dim lighting, allowing us to isolate the effects of prior light exposure. Combined with high-frequency eye tracking, this enabled us to understand not only whether light changed cognition, but also how it shaped visual information gathering during complex cognitive tasks. Here's what we found: ✅ Improved higher-order cognition. ✅ Greater attention to task-relevant information. ✅ Reduced reward-seeking behaviour. ✅ Better preservation of #mood. ✅ No change in vigilance or subjective sleepiness. These findings suggest that light is more than an alerting stimulus. It may act as a preparatory environmental signal, priming the brain for complex cognition and decision-making. Before studying, an important meeting, surgery, or another cognitively demanding task, consider stepping into bright daylight first. 📖 This is a brief summary of our findings.     Your Standing Habits Are Changing Your Body (Here's What to Do) Are your everyday standing habits silently affecting how your body moves and feels? The answer might surprise you. Your body is constantly adapting to the positions you spend the most time in. That does not mean one posture is "bad." It means your body is doing exactly what it is designed to do, and you can work with it. Here are two of the most common standing habits I see, and the movements I pair with each one to help your body build better control. --- HABIT 1: ALWAYS LOOKING DOWN Can looking down at your phone all day affect your posture? Yes, and here is why. When you spend hours looking down at your phone, laptop, or anything below eye level, your body starts to adapt around that position. Over time, this can contribute to your head drifting forward, your upper back rounding, your shoulders sitting farther forward, and your shoulder blades losing smooth, controlled movement when you reach overhead. What can you do about it? I love pairing these two movements for this pattern: 1. Serratus Wall Slide with a Foam Roller. This trains your shoulder blades to glide upward and around your rib cage, getting the serratus anterior involved so your shoulder blade control, upward rotation, and overhead reaching all work more smoothly together. 2. Wall Slide with Lift-Off. This reinforces shoulder position at the top of the movement by asking your body to actively control that range. You are not just stretching. You are building real strength and control in the muscles that support better shoulder and upper back mechanics. --- HABIT 2: HANGING ON ONE HIP Does standing with one hip popped out affect your strength? More than most people realize. When you constantly hang on one hip while standing, you are often relying on passive structures around the hip instead of asking your hip muscles to actively support your pelvis. Over time, this can contribute to less strength and control on one leg, which may show up as a hip drop, a pelvic shift, or that unstable feeling during single-leg movements. What movement helps here? Hip Airplane with Knee Drive. This challenges your glutes, hip rotators, and pelvic stability while your body moves through rotation on one leg. The goal is not perfection. The goal is to teach your hip to create its own stability instead of borrowing it from your joints, low back, or passive structures. --- Your body is not working against you. It is adapting to what you practice most. So if you want to move differently, you have to practice moving differently.
