The Multicultural and Settlement Services supporting women experiencing violence project (known as the MuSeS project) aimed to produce findings that can inform strategies for better supporting women experiencing violence through settlement and multicultural services (including specialist refugee mental health services). Our specific research questions were: 1. How do settlement and multicultural services currently support women experiencing violence? 2. What factors strengthen or undermine the capacity of settlement and multicultural services to: • provide support to migrant and refugee women experiencing violence? • implement early intervention initiatives to support migrant and refugee women (including those in an ongoing relationship with the perpetrator)? • understand and respond to the interaction between the mental health of refugee women and men, and vulnerability to or perpetration of family violence? 3. This case study focuses on Canadian students’ responses to our invitation to imagine their own nationalist superheroes whose costumes and powers represent a nation. We provide a close reading of 34 student artifacts to show how they draw on discourses that position Canada as a benevolent, multicultural country—a rhetorical formation we call the Canadian Shield. We also reveal how some artifacts negotiate tropes of the Shield, adapting or revising them in distinctive ways. We conclude, however, that when invited to create Canadian superheroes, many of the student creations reaffirm dominant visions of the country, and such habits of thought, we venture, are best considered as ideological bottlenecks.

Our research compares a multiculturated consumers' feeling of well-being when evaluating advertisements with differing variations of ethnic targeting. Consumers within a multicultural market (South Africa) have a greater feeling of consumer wellbeing when evaluating an advertisement containing ethnically ambiguous models compared to models of multiple ethnicities or individual ethnic models.

Colonialism, capitalism and patriarchy define the political economy
of our climate crisis and environmental care. This is a regime that universalizes, defines, and dictates the multiplicity of factors that determine how nation-states, global institutions, and corporations make decisions. In the context of the climate crisis and given the inability of both governments and international agreements to address the seriousness of the situation, the time has come to build epistemic bridges between worlds. As Eduardo Viveiros de Castro argues, we have an obligation to take absolutely seriously what Indigenous peoples say. Inspired by his call, in this article we focus on other cosmoexperiences of the planet we inhabit and the co-responsibility we have towards it, to continue making human and more than human life possible.

-->Global Art Biennials: Renovation, Revelation—or Repetition?

In an increasingly saturated biennial landscape, long-established and newly founded exhibitions promise institutional change while embracing the rhetoric of care, affect and experiential immersion. But do these shifting
discourses and formats signal genuine transformation or merely disguise repetition?

The aim of the paper is to examine the effects of the current economic crisis in the way teenagers experience and report interethnic relations with emphasis on interethnic violence in the school environment in Cyprus. It will report findings from an EU funded project which was recently completed (2012) titled: "Children's voices: Exploring interethnic violence in schools". Through an eclectic analysis on interview transcripts from group interviews with teenagers (16-17 year old) it emerges that in Cyprus there is an environment of growing concern about the presence of migrants in society and this has direct and indirect effects on education. Overall there are mixed perceptions about interethnic tolerance in schools ranging from negative to (politically correct) positive ones. While the prevalent discourse of multiculturalism in Cyprus uses the rhetoric of integration, what appears to be happening in the Cypriot educational system, is assimilation practices focusing on language acquisition. The findings of the empirical investigation point to interesting directions for educational policy regarding the whole gamut of interethnic relations in Cyprus at a period in time when the current economic crisis appears to have largely negative effects on multiculturalism. The paper concludes with a discussion on the way the Ministry of Education and schools in Cyprus respond to the above challenges and the prospects for the near future.

This paper argues that left-right polarization has taken place in the Canadian party system since the 1960s and in the Canadian Jewish electorate since the 1970s. The ideological difference between the country's two main parties, Liberal and Conservative, has widened, and Jewish party preferences, once solidly Liberal, now resemble those of the general population, approximately evenly split between Liberals and Conservatives. This conclusion flies in the face of the frequently heard opinion that Canadian Jews have abandoned the Liberal Party because it has become increasingly critical of Israeli policy concerning the Palestinians and is consequently fueling antisemitism in Canada. Analysis of a poll of decided Jewish voters on the eve of the 2025 federal election helps substantiate the point that, except for an anomalous period during which the popularity of Liberal Prime Minister Justin Trudeau plummeted in 2023-2024, Jewish party support in 2025 had not changed much since at least 2018.

In dit artikel wordt onderzocht en uiteengezet hoe het enactivisme als filosofische stroming het neurodiversiteitsdenken kan onderbouwen en hoe dit verdiepte begrip van neurodiversiteit leidt tot een andere benadering van personen met autisme. Eerst wordt de ontwikkeling en inhoud van het neurodiversiteitsdenken geschetst. Vervolgens wordt ingegaan op het enactivisme, een benadering die recht wil doen aan de context, persoonsgebondenheid en waarden die aan de orde zijn in geval van autisme. Ten slotte wordt het verdiepte begrip van neurodiversiteit toegepast op de bejegening en zorg voor mensen met autisme.

The city-port of Melaka, on the western coast of the Malay Peninsula, was a Portuguese position from 1511 to 1641. For most of this period, it was also the only fortified Portuguese position of importance east of Sri Lanka. As such, it withstood a considerable number of sieges by neighboring Southeast Asian potentates, such as the Malay sultanate of Johor and the Sumatran sultanate of Aceh. The last and arguably the greatest siege took place in 1629, led by the Sultanate of Aceh. The successful Portuguese resistance against this large-scale operation was seen as a great feat of arms. Twelve years later, however, the Dutch East India Company took Melaka from the Portuguese after another protracted siege, succeeding where Aceh, the greatest maritime power in the region, had failed. This divergent outcome has traditionally been seen as evidence of European military “advance” over non-Europeans and, additionally, of Dutch “advance” over a surpassed Southern European power. Based on Portuguese and Dutch sources, this chapter assesses whether this traditional Eurocentric view holds up by comparing the two sieges in detail.

Based on the ChiKoN survey on Chinese language courses offered at language centers and China centers at German universities („Chinesisch nebenbei lernen? Ergebnisse der ChiKoN-Erhebung zu Chinesischangeboten an Sprachen- und Chinazentren deutscher Hochschulen“), this publication proposes initial learning goals for a limited-time module entitled „Elementarkompetenzen Chinesisch“. These goals will a) enable basic skills for initial oral and written interaction with the Chinese-speaking academic world, b) provide an introduction to
the world of the Chinese language(s) and its writing system, on which further modules in various areas of competence can be built, and c) promote learners’ autonomy more strongly than conventional Chinese teaching concepts.

The issue of inter-ethnic conflict has become a cankerworm that has eaten deep into the wall of development in Sardauna Local Government Area. Harmony and cordiality characterized the relations between the Mambilla, Kambu, and Fulani prior to 1982. The primary sources involved oral interviews with Traditional institutions, scholars, stakeholders and adults. The secondary sources involved journals, archival materials, Magazines, Newspapers, written materials on the subject matter and the internet. Efforts have been made to recommend workable suggestions to the conflicts between the Mambilla, Kambu and Fulani ethnic groups in Sardauna Local
Government Area.

O ensaio retoma e reescreve A Questão Judaica de Karl Marx (1843) a partir do contexto da destruição de Gaza, propondo uma teoria da presença democrática como resposta às insuficiências dos universalismos políticos modernos. O argumento central é que a modernidade política produz sistematicamente formas de reconhecimento que condicionam a admissão de formas de vida particulares à renúncia prévia às mediações que as constituem — língua, território, rito, memória, organização coletiva, instituições próprias.
O texto acompanha e inverte o movimento marxiano em três etapas. Na primeira, recupera a crítica de Marx a Bruno Bauer para mostrar que a emancipação política pode coexistir com a destruição das condições materiais da presença: o sujeito é reconhecido como cidadão abstrato enquanto seu mundo concreto permanece intocado ou sob ataque. Na segunda, articula as contribuições de Franz Neumann sobre a função ética do direito e de Claude Lefort sobre os direitos como abertura de uma cena de conflito, argumentando que o direito pode domesticar a presença — convertendo formas de vida em casos administráveis — ou sustentá-la, quando incorpora organização coletiva e limites ao poder arbitrário. Na terceira, elabora a crítica do personagem normativo da vítima humanitária: a gramática do humanitarismo contemporâneo reconhece o corpo ferido e bloqueia a presença política, aceitando o sofrimento quando ele permanece separado da história, do território e da demanda por reorganização do comum.
A distinção entre assimilação e crítica organiza o argumento: a assimilação aceita uma forma de vida apenas depois de reduzi-la; a crítica a reconhece como mundo em disputa, aberto a transformação por seus próprios sujeitos e pelo contato com outros. Nesse quadro, o ensaio propõe inverter a conclusão de Marx — segundo a qual a emancipação social do judeu equivaleria à emancipação da sociedade em relação ao judaísmo — sustentando que a emancipação democrática exige libertar o comum da necessidade de empobrecer formas de vida como condição de reconhecê-las.
A teoria da presença democrática resultante articula três dimensões: a recusa da exigência de redução como preço de entrada no universal; a proteção das condições materiais — território, língua, arquivo, instituições, ritos, cuidado — que permitem a uma forma de vida sustentar palavra pública e memória; e a criação de espaços de contato e conflito em que formas de vida possam transformar-se sem coerção. A democracia, nessa perspectiva, começa antes da deliberação: sujeitos capazes de argumentar e universalizar se formam em mundos que precedem o argumento, e a destruição desses mundos — como a perpetrada em Gaza — constitui uma forma de violência que o direito e a humanidade abstrata tendem a nomear apenas depois que o mundo que sustentaria a presença já foi reduzido a ruína.

The relationship between private education and social inequality has long been central to academic and policy debates. While private schools are often justified as mechanisms to diversify provision and accommodate parental preferences, extensive evidence shows that they also contribute to school segregation and the reproduction of privilege. This article examines how urban transformationsspecifically gentrification-reshape the determinants of private school demand, and whether these dynamics differ between primary and secondary education. Focusing on Barcelona-characterised by a strong tradition of publicly subsidised private schooling, a choice-oriented admissions system, and ongoing neighbourhood change-the study explores families' decisions to opt out of local public schools. Drawing on population register data, the analysis investigates the determinants of private school demand in primary education, its evolution between 2014 and 2023, and patterns of transition to private secondary education. The findings show that private schooling operates as a form of selective exit associated with "white flight", but that this relationship is strongly conditioned by local contexts In gentrifying neighbourhoods, opting out of public education at the primary level is less pronounced, suggesting forms of selective tolerance, while transitions to private secondary schooling remain more weakly constrained.

The fi eld of teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL) brings people from various racialized backgrounds together in teaching, learning, and research. The idea of race, racialization, and racism are inescapable topics that arise in the contact zones created by teaching English worldwide and thus are valid topics to explore in the fi eld. Nonetheless, unlike our peer fi elds such as anthropology, education, and sociology, the fi eld of TESOL has not suffi ciently addressed the idea of race and related concepts. This special topic issue is one of the fi rst attempts in our fi eld to fi ll the gap. This introductory article will survey key concepts and theories defi ned and debated in various fi elds, including race, ethnicity, culture, racialization, racism, critical race theory, and critical White studies, to provide a foundation for future explorations.

On the basis of internet forum and press media data, this article studies the expression of hostile attitudes towards multilingualism and multiculturalism in the context of debates about immigration. The forum data are drawn from the BBC’s Have Your Say website, which is a moderated forum that excludes polemical and abusive postings. Nevertheless, it still seems to provide its users ample opportunity for airing strongly anti-immigrant attitudes. The narratives in which these attitudes are being expressed are exemplary stories of the posters’ supposed encounters with the use of foreign languages in the street, in the workplace or at school. This presence of foreign languages in the British public sphere is evaluated as being (at least) problematic and is “explained” as a result of mass immigration, which serves to reinforce the scenario of a culture mix that will destroy British “home” culture. Sociolinguists have adopted the concept of "super-diversity" from cultural anthropology to analyse multidimensional changes in ethnolinguistic identities resulting from recent mass migration. Sociolinguistic super-diversity is thus understood as a central aspect of shifts in migration patterns that have increased the complexity of cultural identities beyond traditional, more static 'multicultural' diversity, both in Britain and globally. How is the presence of more complex and diverse linguistic identities viewed by the public? This paper explores attitudes towards perceived increased multilingualism and multiculturalism expressed in the BBC's Have Your Say Internet forum. The majority of postings blame immigrants for communication problems with the British 'home' community and allege their unwillingness to learn English; many also assume that (only) a monolingual national community guarantees social coherence and they are dismissive of any language mediation services. In view of these 'folk-sociolinguistic' assumptions and linguaphobic attitudes, the notion of super-diversity needs to be reconfigured so as to include the (unintended) adverse impact of the migration-induced increase in the diversity and complexity of imagined ethnolinguistic identities

Introduction

The exhibition surrounding the Grand Staircase of Paleis Het Loo, opened in April 2026, represents an interesting attempt to place an iconic element of the palace within a new historical perspective. Through its art-historical approach and its references to contacts between the Dutch Republic under Stadtholder William III and the Ottoman Empire, the exhibition appears at first glance to align with the ambitions of the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science as expressed in its Agenda Against Discrimination and Racism. This policy explicitly advocates greater plurality of voices, the representation of diverse perspectives, and the inclusion of different audiences in the cultural heritage of the Netherlands.

Yet, in several crucial respects, the exhibition falls short of these ambitions and raises fundamental questions concerning perspective, depth, and museological courage.

Following a short essay that I previously published on this subject, Forgotten Staircase (https://www.academia.edu/165835270/Forgotten_staircase), in which I outlined my objections to the concept, I was invited by Paleis Het Loo shortly after the exhibition’s opening to elaborate on my concerns and discuss the existing differences of opinion. During two meetings with several senior staff members—including the Head of Collections, the Head of Programming, and the Head of Public Relations—I presented my views in detail. Despite these exchanges, however, the differences in interpretation remained unresolved.

Paleis Het Loo ultimately chose to maintain its original concept and rejected my proposal to give a public lecture in which I could present my alternative interpretation.

Because these disagreements touch upon fundamental questions regarding the way museums and other state institutions engage with the history of what is now the Netherlands—questions comparable to the broader societal debates surrounding slavery—I have decided to make these concerns public. This is not intended as criticism of individual staff members, who appear to be implementing an established institutional policy from which they are not permitted to deviate.

Tulisan ini merupakan kajian teologis yang bergerak dari yang umum ke yang khusus: dari asal-usul agama sebagai fenomena universal manusia, pandangan lintas tradisi spiritual besar dunia terhadap norma seksual dan isu LGBT, hingga kajian teologis Kristiani yang mendalam tentang tatanan penciptaan, hermeneutika Perjanjian Baru, dan tanggung jawab gereja. Penulis berargumen bahwa konsensus moral lintas peradaban tentang relasi laki-laki dan perempuan bukan produk satu agama, melainkan ekspresi dari tatanan yang lebih dalam yang dibaca oleh berbagai tradisi dari arah yang berbeda. La naturaleza multiétnica y multicultural que distingue a Colombia ha sido, desde hace ya algunas décadas el centro de reflexión de las políticas educativas. La racionalidad de los análisis, se centró en la búsqueda de alternativas para responder a los reclamos de reconocimiento y derecho de los grupos y comunidades étnicas a presentar su cultura mediante una educación propia. En consecuencia, se identificó la etnoeducación como una propuesta viable, la cual ha venido superando las limitaciones que en cada momento se plantearon como desafíos. El análisis de los documentos, la sistematización de los estudios acerca del tema en tesis y artículos publicados en los últimos décadas, permitieron conformar una caracterización y síntesis de la evolución histórica del proceso, al tiempo que se reconocen los logros y se vislumbran nuevas reflexiones para lograr una propuesta, coherente con la proyección educativa que sustenta Colombia, en correspondencia con los derechos otorgados a los grupos étnicos y comunidades indígenas para la defensa de su cultura.

A Cross-cultural communication occurs in multicultural and multilingual societies. Selatpanjang is a multicultural and multilingual city with "native" ethnic Malays, Chinese, and Akit people. This research aims to describe the implementation of partnership principles in cross-cultural communication amongst Malay, Akit, and Chinese ethnics in Selatpanjang. This study uses a descriptive method. Data were collected through observations and interviews. The steps taken in analyzing the data are data reduction, data categorization, data synthesis, and formulation of research findings. The research findings revealed that the implementation of partnership principles in cross-cultural communication amongst Malay, Akit, and Chinese ethnics is as follows: 14.2% of respondents from the Malays implementing the partnership principles belong to the "very good" category. In addition, 43.2% of them belong to the "good" category. 42.5% of them belong to the "fairly good" category. None of them fall into the "poor" category; 58.7% of respondents thought the Akit ethnic group fell into the "very good" category, 31.2% fell into the "good" category, 10% fell into the "fairly good" category, and none fell into the "poor" category. Regarding Chinese ethnics, 38% of them belong to the "very good" category, 22.7% belong to the "good" category, 18.25% belong to the "fairly good" category, and none belong to the "poor" category. In addition, the findings revealed that the implementation of partnership principles cannot be separated from the language characteristics of each ethnic group. Akit people tend to convey the right amount of message and the right information, focus on the topic of conversation, and speak concisely "according to" their rigid, closed, and flat character. Ethnic Malays commit several violations of the maxim of the partnership principle, influenced by their humorous, adaptable, and self-limiting character. Chinese tend to be serious and focused, but they speak longer to convince interlocutors.

Newton Brown A World of Difference Program May 2000 Dr. Ronald L. Capasso Educational Administration The purpose of the study is to develop aggregated understandings of bias and how it affects violence in a school's culture using action research. The study, through A World of Difference Program's Anti-Bias Study Guide and peer interventions, will result in improved cultural relations. At this stage in the research, bias is studied and acknowledged. A fifty thousand-dollar grant was awarded to Atlantic City's Board of Education, with one school piloting the program. The A World of Difference Program focuses on training, education, and interactive activities. Student and teacher volunteers, who do the work will recognize and realize, through communications, that we are not so different. As an established program, it has its own built-in longitudinal study designs. Within one year, two needs assessments will be conducted. Evaluation of the program is based on peer training, teacher and parent components, and a sense of renewed relationships. Recruiting new change agents is primary to creating something positive within the organizational culture of this facility. In concluding, students are less rigid and independent than adults and more apt to participate in new ventures. The healthcare landscape and its service delivery are rapidly evolving, and lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, and asexual (LGBTQIA+) communities continue to encounter disproportionate barriers to care, increased scrutiny, and frequent microaggressions in care, policies, and practices. This article aims to examine healthcare providers' emotional and mental capacity for delivering sexuality-and gender-affirming care, as well as supporting recovery from healthcare provider burnout and access to wellness resources. It explores the intersectional lived experiences of LGBTQAI+ youth, adults, and families within healthcare, along with the oftenoverlooked need for professional well-being. Specifically, I will analyze how intersectionality and healthcare equity in LGBTQIA+ services are influenced by providers' emotional and mental resilience and support systems for burnout prevention and recovery. The globalization process is not reducible to its international dimension, i.e., to international, or even, to transnational relationships. In many states, it also consists of domestic phenomena, such as an increasing cultural pluralism, that does not result solely from a domestic and gradual evolution, but, to a significant extent, either from migrations or from radical changes of mind made possible by cultural globalization. This kind of cultural pluralism is what one can call multiculturalism, in the descriptive sense of the characteristics of a multicultural society (as distinguished from the normative meaning, i.e., from the policies that aim at either maintaining or promoting multiculturalism in the descriptive meaning). This paper aims to discuss the articulation between deliberative democracy and cultural pluralism.

Traditional liberalism's blindness to cultural concerns has often come under fire, while so‐called “liberal multiculturalism” (Taylor and Kymlicka) has made it its business to take a good look at the place of culture within liberal law. According to them, cultural minorities should be recognized. In my opinion, however, their proposals, in fact, almost entirely preclude the possibility that cultural minorities would receive recognition within liberal society. In what follows, I explain my view of these matters and, above all, argue for a more vital understanding of cultural minorities. This will entail presenting a comprehensive view of minority rights within liberal society.

In a matter of three years Armenia lost a war with Azerbaijan and parts of its own territory, before finally losing Nagorno-Karabakh itself. The massive expulsion of Nagorno-Karabakh Armenians, following a nine months-long suffocating siege imposed by the Azerbaijani military, will add to the layers of collective trauma of the Armenians. This series of losses not only marked a military defeat and a forfeiture of land but it also meant the collapse of political ideas on which Armenia’s independence was first constructed, and upon which Armenian political thinking was based.

This article addresses Pancasila as a text of interfaith dialogue in Indonesian context. The plurality of Indonesian society bears religious uniqueness in social life together, while conflicts may take place between religious groups. Religious conflicts are caused by attitude of exclusivism, radicalism, fundamentalism of religions and political identity. Pancasila can hold the sense collectivity among Indonesian society to be united. This article employs Gadamer hermeneutic theory in viewing historical texts. History is not something that only happened in the past and is interrupted with the present contexts. The theory of global ethics-Hans Kung, also helps the importance of dialogue with the religious communities to create religious peace. Cette note de recherche présente les résultats d’une étude exploratoire à partir des données de cinq entretiens réalisés auprès de cinq migrants d’origine latino-américaine vivant en France. Pour cela une analyse lexicométrique du discours a été réalisée à l’aide du logiciel Alceste. Les résultats indiquent que pour faire face aux conflits identitaires provoqués par le contact avec l’altérité culturelle, les stratégies identitaires individuelles et collectives adoptées par les personnes en situation de migration peuvent être impactées par quatre facteurs : le changement statutaire ressenti, l’utilisation des TIC, le système de valeur de la personne et les caractéristiques du pays d’accueil.

Loss of olfactory function is common in old age, but evidence regarding qualitative olfactory dysfunction in the general older population is scarce. The current study investigates the prevalence and correlates of phantom smell experiences (phantosmia) in a population-based study (Swedish National Study on Aging and Care in Kungsholmen [SNAC-K]) of Swedish adults (n = 2569) aged between 60 and 90 years. Phantosmia was assessed through a standardized interview and defined as reporting having experienced an odor percept in the absence of any stimuli in the surrounding environment that could emit the odor. The relationships between phantosmia and demographic, genetic, health-related, and behavioral variables were analyzed with hierarchical logistic regression analyses. The overall prevalence of phantom smells was 4.9%, and was associated with female gender, carrying the met allele of the BDNF gene, higher vascular risk burden, and reporting distorted smell sensations (parosmia). Olfactory dysfunction was, however, not related to phantosmia. The most frequently reported phantom smell was smoky/burnt. A novel finding was that some individuals reported phantom smells with an autobiographical connotation. The results from this study indicate that the prevalence of phantosmia in the general older population is not negligible and that some factors that are beneficial for preserved olfactory function, such as female gender and the BDNF met allele, are also associated with the occurrence of phantom smells.

The National Education Policy (NEP-2020) places unprecedented emphasis on multilingualism, linguistic diversity, and the integration of modern technologies in higher education. In this context, Artificial Intelligence (AI) emerges as a transformative force in comparative linguistics, translation studies, and digital language learning. This study examines how AIdriven tools such as machine translation systems, natural language processing (NLP) models, and corpus-based linguistic analysis can support the comparative study of Indo-Aryan, Dravidian, and selected global languages. The paper explores structural, semantic, and phonological differences between these language families and evaluates the performance of AI tools in managing linguistic complexity, especially in low-resource Indian languages like Gujarati, Kannada, Tamil, and Odia. Using a mixed-method approach, the research integrates theoretical linguistic analysis with practical evaluation, including AI translation testing, corpus comparisons, and perception surveys of students and educators regarding AI-assisted multilingual learning. Findings reveal that while advanced AI models show significant accuracy with global languages, challenges persist in handling morphological richness, syntactic variation, and cultural nuance in Indian languages. The study highlights opportunities for AI-enhanced multilingual pedagogy aligned with NEP-2020, while emphasizing ethical, cultural, and pedagogical considerations. Ultimately, the research argues that AI, when thoughtfully integrated, can strengthen India's multilingual vision by enhancing translation quality, language accessibility, and cross-cultural communication.

Multiculturalism is the identity of a nation which must be understood and internalized in learning practice. Literature learning is an alternative to the internalization of multicultural values. Indonesia is a country that is closely related to nuances of multiculturalism. This situation brings the consequence that multiculturalism must be understood by every citizen not to mention the youth, in this case, learners. Internalization is a process of instilling values or incorporating ideal attitudes previously thought to be external, in order that the values can be incorporated into one's thinking, skills and way of life. The learning of literature as a means of internalizing the nation's culture should be done by involving various parties, especially parents, teachers, and society.

This chapter makes the argument that it is time for research into IC to move towards a more expansive definition of intercultural competence (IC) which does not focus solely on the ability to communicate or interact in intercultural situations. This is because IC can also be deployed in a range of other kinds of intercultural situation, including situations in which an individual makes intercultural judgements without communicating or interacting with another person. We also argue that more attention needs to be paid to the values that form an intrinsic part of IC—that is, valuing human dignity and human rights, and valuing cultural diversity—and to the concept of respect. Respect may be linked in various ways to these values, and the distinction between respect on the one hand and the values on the other, and the relationship between them, require more conceptual clarity than they usually receive in discussions of IC. The concepts of ‘culture’, ‘intercultural’ and ‘competence’ that necessarily underpin any definition of IC likewise require more attention than they frequently receive, and for this reason, we offer an analysis of these concepts in this chapter. We also highlight the various ways in which people’s cultural affiliations become salient—or can lose their salience—within concrete situations. Finally, we summarise the principal results that have emerged from a large body of work that has identified the core components of IC.

Background: The equilateral triangle is a fundamental object in geometry, notable for its symmetrical properties, which are best understood through dynamic visualization. Traditional methods often fall short in making these concepts accessible, especially in rural educational contexts with limited resources. Aims: This study aimed to explore the effectiveness of GeoGebra software as a mediating tool to enhance rural mathematics teacher training, particularly in understanding the symmetries of equilateral triangles. Methods: Employing a qualitative and descriptive methodology, the research collected data through classroom observations, analysis of participants' digital constructions using GeoGebra, and reflective interviews. These methods were chosen to capture how pre-service teachers engage with geometric concepts via dynamic tools. Results: The results demonstrated that GeoGebra significantly improves the visualization of geometric transformations such as rotations and reflections. Participants reported increased comprehension and engagement due to the interactive nature of the software. The teaching approach also encouraged deeper geometric reasoning and fostered the ability to connect abstract group theory with concrete visual representations. Conclusion: The use of GeoGebra in rural teacher training is not only feasible but transformative. As a free, accessible platform, it bridges gaps caused by resource limitations and aligns well with local educational realities. The software empowers future educators to adopt student-centered approaches that make geometry both meaningful and contextually relevant. This proposal supports the integration of digital tools in teacher education and provides a replicable model for similar contexts globally. Future research should investigate broader applications of GeoGebra across other geometric topics and assess its long-term impact on classroom practice in rural environments.
