Now this is a great list for #FemaleFounders and anyone scaling in this space. I came across these 38 funds backing women founders across industries including #HealthTech, #MedTech, #LifeScience, #Wellness, and #HealthAI. As someone working alongside Health AI and Biotech innovators, this hits home. Too many women founders still face systemic barriers in raising capital, even when their science and solutions are game-changing. For me, it’s not enough to just celebrate the funds that are stepping up. The real question is: how do we keep the momentum so more women-led health companies can actually scale? What will venture capital look like in 10 years? Will it even exist?! If so what will it become? Or more importantly, what would you like to see? I’m at a BVCA event today discussing this very topic. I’m on after Rach. Here’s my inner monologue: Firstly what do VCs do - we source select support. That’s the hub of the rub. Tick. Secondly who are our stakeholders - LPs VCs and founders / startups. Ok cool. What else? Well, what are the trends that will be leaned into over time, and what kind of world do we want to build? To start, I’ll state upfront right now that it won’t be access to capital that’s relevant - it’ll be access to networks, talent, and distribution. I passionate believe that… Why? Because the founder <> funder connectivity challenge will be crushed by AI. Everyone will have access to everyone. (Already well on its way.) And what else? Europe will follow the US into RIA territory where the mega funds aren’t actually VCs, but full stack, full breadth depth, soup to nuts everything investors. Paving the way for second tier niche funds (niche doesn’t necessarily mean small) to specialise and own verticals. Again. Already happening. Europe just playing catch-up (that said, still growing 4x faster than US) Developing markets (thinking mainly LATAM and ASEAN) bunnyhopping the rubbish years of VC and absorbing their versions of process and product as they catch-up. Also on my mind? How do you market money when the playing field is this founder friendly and wide open?! Brand, platform and distribution will win. Offering more than cash. *Owning* your market position as a VC whether mega, or niche. (Easier when you have more money than God, fo sho) We’ll also see new models evolve, beyond the 2 and 20, beyond trad Dad VC. Continuation, rolling, circular capital will take their place (a post for another time). As the market continues to rebound from the Zombie ZIRP VC crushing days we’ll see new firms, new models that aren’t necessarily unicorn hunting, as an example. Pension, retail and other institutional capital will unlock and flood into venture because technology (in the broadest sense of the word) will continue to save us from ourselves. Driven by the next gen of investors who get it, get tech, get AI. Boomers a long distant grey haired memory. Public and private aligned - and no longer embarrassed by each other. Govts wanting change will be forced to be smart enough to incentivise - and then get the hell out of the way to let private’s do what they do best. With smaller and more nimble startup teams able to do much more with much less in an AI interconnected world powered by abundant and free energy. Ebbing and flowing with the geopolitical shifts. Female-led startups received just 2.9% of venture capital funding in New Zealand in 2024. Unfortunately, this aligns with global trends: 🌿 Women-only founding teams secured 2.3% of global VC funding in 2024, while all-male teams captured 83.6%. 🌿 Yet, research shows female-founded companies deliver 35% higher ROI and generate 2x the revenue per dollar invested compared to male-led firms. This is not just a diversity issue—it’s an economic inefficiency. When capital allocation ignores performance data, markets underperform. The next decade will bring the largest wealth transfer in history, with women projected to control over half of global wealth. This shift will redefine investment priorities and could accelerate systemic change in venture capital. What needs to happen now? 🌿 Bias-free evaluation: Focus on traction, strategy, and execution—not gendered assumptions. 🌿 Data-driven decisions: Back founders who deliver results, regardless of gender. 🌿 Inclusive capital networks: Build ecosystems where diverse founders have equal access to funding and mentorship. This is a very important conversation. Whangārei has a high proportion of female founders, and one thing Whangārei Startups is working on is a “baby angel” / angel investor academy, which would develop the investing and advisory skills of our local talent. When I look at the recruitment list for that group, it is 75% wāhine. Perhaps in several years, when this work has gathered momentum, our stats will buck the abysmal international data. PS in the UK it’s 1% for female led ventures - and for UK black women it’s off the charts low, so, small progress but Aotearoa New Zealand is out performing Britain at least.
