𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆—𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗪𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 Congratulations to the Swiss Solar Boat team from EPFL on being crowned Overall Champion of the 2026 Monaco Energy Boat Challenge. The competition brought together 54 teams from 21 countries to advance sustainable marine technology through cleaner propulsion, improved energy efficiency, autonomous capabilities, and innovative vessel design. Swiss Solar Boat competed with Lobst’Air, a three-seater Renewable Energy Foiler powered by a hybrid solar-hydrogen system. Designed for performance and autonomy, the vessel combines green hydrogen, solar energy, electric propulsion, and hydrofoil technology in one ambitious engineering platform. We are proud to have supported a small part of that journey. The team used Speedgoat as a central real-time control platform for the propulsion system. Described by Swiss Solar Boat as the “brain of the boat,” it communicated with the electronic speed controllers over CAN and helped the engineers test and characterize the motors under different load and speed conditions before integrating them into the vessel. That ability to validate controls before going onto the water is especially valuable in marine development, where real-world trials can be limited, costly, and dependent on weather and operating conditions. Real-time testing helps engineers refine functionality beforehand and gain more value from every run. 🥇 Last week, we gathered in the Netherlands for our General Assembly, hosted by our partner Lightyear, and we had the chance to get our hands on one of the demonstrators of our project, a test car with the following specs: 🚗 Designed from the ground up to have a very low drag coefficient ☀️ Contains 5 m2 of glass-based solar panels. 🌍 The car can produce an additional 177 km of range based on an average summer week in the Netherlands. 🚀 The car is serving the purposes of the project, aiming to develop new Lightweight solar panels that can be integrated in vehicles. Lightyear is developing polymer-based panels, with a lower total weight that can translate to additional range. The demonstrator car is currently gathering data to prove the validity of the developed solutions. As more of Europe's electricity comes from renewable sources, the challenge is making sure it's there when people actually need it. When the ☀️ sun is setting, the 🍃 wind dropping, or rivers running low, the electricity that keeps your 💡 lights and your fridge on has to come from somewhere. Long Duration Energy Storage (LDES) is what makes it possible to capture ⚡#RenewableEnergy when it's abundant and deliver it back after 8+ hours, or even days later, exactly when it's needed in your daily life. By storing 🪫 energy for days or weeks, LDES allows electricity grids built on renewable energy to stay reliable even when the weather doesn't cooperate for an extended stretch. Our project #AVANGUARD is building the 1st free, open-source digital platform to help grid operators, planners and policymakers to deploy LDES faster and more effectively, accelerating LDES uptake in the EU energy system. Summer progress update from Maritime Ocean Power. WavePulse, our nearshore wave energy converter, reached an important milestone with float heave performance validated in real ocean conditions on the Atlantic coast, a key step in moving from concept to a system that performs where it’s meant to operate. We’ve also welcomed ocean engineering advisors from UNB and Dalhousie to the team, and submitted our application to Canada’s Ocean Supercluster. Our focus remains the same: practical, maintainable, and marketable wave energy technology built for coastal communities still relying on diesel power.
